Michigan Humanities to launch virtual conversations centered on civic and electoral participation

Mellon Foundation and the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Okemos- Michigan Humanities is pleased to announce it is the recipient of $50,000 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Federation of State Humanities Councils to participate in the national “Why it Matters: Civic and Electoral Participation” initiative. This program will explore civic participation as it relates to electoral engagement in a multivocal democracy. This initiative will take place in 43 states across the country until the spring of 2021. Michigan Humanities will present a series of virtual state-wide conversations that will examine the electoral process by exploring Michigan’s urban-rural divide and the influence of social media. These conversations will bring together humanities professionals and Michiganders and provide a place for open dialogue and learning. The first event will take place on Thursday, December 3, at 7 p.m. via a Zoom webinar format. Registration can be found on the Michigan Humanities website: www.michiganhumanities.org<http://www.michiganhumanities.org>. “We are delighted to take part in this partnership to discuss important electoral issues so relevant in our society,” said Shelly Hendrick Kasprzycki, President and CEO of Michigan Humanities. “Our scholars will offer excellent discussion leadership about the influences on our electoral process and the differences in urban and rural civic participation.” The first conversation on December 3 will discuss the history and impact the urban-rural divide in Michigan has had on local, state, and federal elections. The discussion will be led by Dr. Kevin G. Lorentz II and Dr. Thomas Henthorn, both from the University of Michigan at Flint. Kevin G. Lorentz II (Ph.D., Wayne State University) is lecturer in political science at the University of Michigan at Flint. His research focuses broadly on American constitutional law, judicial politics, and civic education, with a specific focus on constitutional attitudes. Kevin’s other research focuses on judicial decision making and behavior, civic education and pedagogical practices, and collaborative work on local government institutional structures and behaviors. Beyond his academic work, Kevin has worked extensively in local government, serving as a member of the Bay County (Michigan) Board of Canvassers (auditing and certifying election results) and as a deputy county clerk. A native of northern Michigan, Kevin received his B.A. from Saginaw Valley State University (University Center, MI) and completed master’s coursework at Central Michigan University (Mt. Pleasant, MI). Dr. Thomas Henthorn is the Wyatt Endowed Professor of Public History at the University of Michigan at Flint and his research explores the intersection between urban history and public history. Dr. Henthorn's research challenges audiences and his students to think about the historical differences between city and countryside. Future conversations in early 2021 will focus on the effects social media has had on how we consume information, inform our decisions, and how it has had impacts on recent elections. These conversations will be led by Dr. Jayson Dibble. Dr. Jayson L. Dibble, Ph.D., is currently an associate professor in the Department of Communication at Hope College, Holland, Michigan. He holds a doctorate in interpersonal communication from Michigan State University, and he researches and teaches on the topic of interpersonal communication to include communication through social media and the impact of social media on personal relationships. Dr. Dibble has published or co-published more than two dozen articles or book chapters, and his research and writing have been featured in various national outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, NBC News, The Washington Post, Fox News, The Atlantic, and Psychology Today. He will be joined by colleagues from Hope College’s departments of Communication and Political Science. There are a few guidelines that help improve the experience for everyone: 1. If you ask for group input on a topic, offer to collect the responses and then re-post them to the list so everyone can benefit. Be sure to embed those responses in the body of your message. 2. Please keep in mind when composing your messages that attachments are removed from posts for digest subscribers and in the archives. For maximum reach, embed the text you wish readers to see in the body of your message. If an attachment is especially important for its images, formatting or other reasons, upload it to your website and then link to it in your message to Michlib-l. 3. Do not post replies that are meant for one person to the entire list. You can accomplish this by using the "Reply" feature and not "Reply All." And, of course, a little patience goes a long way. Once approved, this registration signs you up for both days of the training. This training will utilize Google Classroom, so please sign up using a Gmail address.] As library staff look ahead to summer 2021, they are beginning to consider how they will adapt summer reading plans to reach as many patrons as possible, whether virtual or in-person. Library staff have found themselves in a sea of tools and resources to facilitate virtual programming during the COVID-19 crisis to simulate the in-person environment, with each tool and resource producing a different result. One methodology, if implemented properly, has the capacity to not only create inquiry-based, active, remote teaching and learning experiences, but also impact the in-person format. This methodology is called the Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL focuses on providing patrons choice and agency while addressing their individual needs. This methodology supports self-regulation, improves engagement, and provides multiple means of expression. Facilitators from Infiniscope and the STAR Library Network are pleased to discuss UDL with library staff and find ways that library staff can implement this methodology in their own library or online! Albion District Library Closed Through December

Albion District Library has been closed since August 25 due to the discovery of water damage and mold. We've experienced multiple setbacks throughout the last four months, including our insurance denying our claim and three more roof leaks since the initial discovery. Our roof is scheduled to be replaced the week of December 6, and our remediation project is currently on hold until that is complete. (There's no point putting walls and ceilings back up if we still have water coming in. Keep your fingers crossed for us, please. We need the weather to hold out long enough to get the new roof on.) With that in mind, and in an abundance of caution regarding the safety of our staff and public amid staggeringly high infection rates in our county, the ADL Board of Trustees has decided to close through the end of this year. Printing and credit cards

Hi - We're looking at buying a new printer soon, but would like to know how other libraries are handling credit card payments for printing. Currently we use Cybrarian for printing, which does not seem to have an on screen credit card payment option, then either accept cash payment or GovPay card swipe at the main desk upon print job release. An on screen option for patrons who'd like to pay for their prints with a card prior to printing would be ideal, but we've also considered a printer that takes card payments, or one that works with a program where money is loaded onto a patron's library card (not something we're comfortable with).
