Student E-resource Library Cards

Good morning everyone! My library is working with our local public school system to set up student E-resource Library Cards. These cards will allow students to access our online resources but not check actual items out from our library (students can come with their parent to get a regular library card for item check outs). We are looking at handing out roughly 1500 E-resource library cards. If your library already has an E-resource library card program set up with local schools, I am looking for the following information: Do you assign cards to individual students using a simple registration? or Do you assign the cards generically to the school? If you assign the cards to individual students, do you set an expiration date (graduation date)? Any info or advice will be gladly accepted and appreciated. In person application will not be accepted at this time. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSITION SUMMARY Under the management of the library director, the Circulation Services Department Head is responsible for the paraprofessional staff who perform material handling and public service-three Supervisors as well as Pages, Technical Processing Assistants, Acquisitions Assistant, and Circulation Assistants. The Circulation Services Department Head works with the Library Director and other Department Heads as part of the library's management team to plan the library's development as a whole and within the department. This position is classified as a regular full-time position and is exempt from overtime. The nature of the work requires evening and weekend hours. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Oversees the recruitment, selection, evaluation, and discipline of Circulation Services personnel. * Oversees and directs the professional development, coaching, and mentoring of department staff. * Meets regularly with supervisory staff to track progress and development of department staff, writes and delivers annual performance evaluations for direct reports and reviews and edits performance evaluations written by department supervisors. * Prioritizes public service staffing and manages workflow, coordinating with other Department Heads as appropriate. * Develops annual department budget in conjunction with the management team and the Accountant; allocates expenditures, monitors the budget and approves purchase orders and disbursements within approved amounts and as authorized by the Library Director. * Establishes and maintains effective and appropriate working relationships with colleagues, staff, the Library Director, and the public. * Actively participates in long range planning, including strategic planning, development of objectives, translating library-wide initiatives into department-specific tasks, and coordinating departmental efforts with other Department Heads and also within the framework of the entire library. * As part of the management team, develops and appropriately interprets library policies and procedures, and is able to communicate them effectively to both staff and the public. * Serves on committees within the community and the library industry and speaks to local groups and at regional, state, or national conferences, as a representative of the library. * Facilitates and participates in planning and project work groups. Assigns appropriate staff to workgroups as department representatives as needed. * Monitors trends and best practices in society and the industry and recommends appropriate and innovative initiatives and/or changes for implementation at the library. * Monitors community demographics and recommends changes in the library's public service approach, procedures, programs or services. * Develops and implements new methods to improve the efficiency and operations of the department and the library as a whole. * Reviews and/or interprets department related statistical data; prepares reports as requested by the Director. * Handles administrative responsibilities as assigned in the absence of the Library Director. * Stays informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, SharePoint, library newsletter and blog. Contributes content as appropriate. * Accepts special assignments or duties in support of the library's mission and strategic plan. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS * Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience that encompasses the knowledge and skills typically acquired by pursuing such a degree. * Three years of experience in a public library or comparable customer service environment. * Two years of supervisory or management experience in a public library or comparable customer service environment. * Familiarity with library automation systems, database management, and fielded data. * Demonstrated experience with the theories and practices of public service and public libraries. * Possession of high-level verbal and written communications skills and the ability to deliver tactful and decisive explanations of library policies, procedures, and decisions to the public and to staff. * Experience with budget development and management. * Consistent display of public service attitude that reflects the library's values. * Able to organize, analyze, and interpret data and make recommendations to the Library Director and management team. * Able to work with minimal direction and effectively manage and direct the work of others. * Able to multi-task, manage concurrent projects with a large staff, and adapt to changing circumstances. * Proficiency with the most widely-used features of Microsoft Office applications and common office equipment. * Willingness to take on additional projects when needed to advance the library's mission. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Three years of supervisory or management experience in a public library or comparable customer service environment. * Demonstrated ability to select, adapt, and apply new techniques and methods to a public library environment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Sufficient physical agility to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, sit, lift up to 40 lbs., and push carts weighing up to 200 lbs. * Manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to grab, hold, process and shelve materials and supplies, and read small print on labels. * Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permits the employee to communicate in writing and verbally. * Sufficient vision which permits the employee to produce and review a wide variety of materials in both electronic and hard copy form. * Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions in a fast-paced environment. Foundations of digital literacy virtual workshops for Michigan library staff

Foundations of Digital Literacy is a new virtual training offered by MCLS in partnership with the Library of Michigan. This workshop is designed to help library staff gain confidence in everyday interactions with technology and is intended for participants who would like a basic introduction to digital literacy topics. Registration is now open and filling fast! This workshop is being offered multiple times in September and October to accommodate smaller participation limits in each session, which will allow for plenty of personal attention and lots of interactive small group activities. Because they are funded by the Library of Michigan, these trainings are only open to staff of Michigan libraries.
