Flexible Online Instruction Using Modular Learning Design Workshop - ALA Publishing

Hi michlib colleagues, I wanted to let you know that I’ll be teaching a workshop on modular learning design for libraries this spring. In this two-part workshop, I’ll introduce the concept of modular learning, an approach to developing intentional, strategic online learning objects, and engages participants in applying these concepts in their own work. In the first session, we’ll address how modular design fits into information literacy and instructional design, and work together to identify what partnerships, stakeholder relationships, and existing content you can leverage in a modular design process. In the second session, we’ll identify how you can incorporate evaluation, assessment, accessibility, and usability into your projects, and how you can scale, transform, and plan for the future of your resources. This workshop takes place on Wednesdays, April 28 and May 5. Position Opening: Library Director, Flat River Community Library, 200 W Judd St, Greenville, MI 48838 The Flat River Community Library Board of Trustees is seeking a dynamic, patron-centric, team-oriented leader to be their next library director. Flat River is a class IV district library with a population of 17,626 located in central Michigan. The library is a member of the Lakeland Library Cooperative, a 42 - member library cooperative serving western Michigan. Located in Greenville, the birthplace of Meijer Grocery, the community offers a small-town feel 30 minutes Northeast of Grand Rapids, with recreational nature/bike trails, lakes, rivers, and community festivals, all with programming opportunities connected to the Flat River Library. This position is responsible for managing and directing all administrative functions of the library, inclusive but not limited to: financial administration, personnel management/development and facility operations. Flat River has strong community support, a fully engaged Friends of the Library group, and ideal funding with a dedicated mileage in perpetuity that is coupled with a recently passed county mileage. A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution is required along with a Michigan Librarian’s Permanent Professional Certificate (or the ability to acquire within 6 months). A minimum of 5 years ’ experience in a public library is preferred. Experience as a director or in a leadership role at a district library is desirable. This position requires strong skills in customer service, administration and community involvement. Enthusiasm for and knowledge of new technology, the ability to enjoy working on multiple projects at once and collaborating and working directly with the staff are all essential skills for this position. The salary range is $55,000 to $63,000 and a full benefits package is also provided. Register now for this virtual training opportunity for Michigan library staff

Registration now for a new virtual training for Michigan library staff on creating a digital literacy learning plan for library staff, offered by MCLS in partnership with the Library of Michigan. This workshop is being offered multiple times through April and May to accommodate smaller participation limits in each session, which will allow for plenty of personal attention and lots of interactive small group activities. “Unlocking the Secrets of a Digital Literacy Learning Plan for Library Staff” is designed to equip you with the tools and a process to help you build a learning plan around technology and digital literacy skills for library staff. If you wish your library had such a learning plan in place, but you’re not sure where to start or how to organize it, then this workshop is for you! Developing a learning plan is essential in empowering staff to develop digital literacy and technology skills. In this four-hour virtual workshop, participants will learn the basics of creating a digital learning plan for their library that includes how to leverage collective strengths to build skills and how to incorporate technology competencies and create activities to help staff successfully achieve their digital literacy goals. This workshop is designed primarily for public library staff who have some responsibility or involvement in staff training. The workshop is designed to be interactive and will include small group activities in breakout rooms, and the use of a microphone and camera will be required for successful participation. Registration is just $15 and, because it is funded by the Library of Michigan, is open to Michigan Library staff. Each workshop will run from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Eastern with a 45-minute lunch break. This workshop will only be available as live virtual instruction. At the completion of the workshop, continued support will be provided to participants in the form of six monthly virtual coaching calls. This continued support will be completely voluntary and for the purpose of gaining support in creation and implementation of a digital literacy learning plan for participants’ own libraries.
