Program recommendation: Jeff Morrison's Guardians of Detroit
by David Stokes 19 Oct '21

19 Oct '21

Apologies for cross-postings... Via Zoom we hosted historian/photographer/graphic artist Jeff Morrison last night to present his book *Guardians of Detroit: Architectural Sculpture in the Motor City*. We'd originally had Jeff scheduled for May 2020 . . . but then the pandemic. His presentation was worth the wait, as it was a fascinating exploration of an oft-neglected and unseen side of Detroit architecture. Not only was Jeff very knowledgeable on his topic, but is also a good presenter. He provided a lot of history and context for his many great photos. Jeff's book was a 2020 Michigan Notable Book, as well as being selected by the Historical Society of Michigan in 2019 for its State History Award for Outstanding Michigan History Publication. So, if you've not already had him in your library (virtually or in-person), I highly recommend him. David M. Stokes Adult Services Librarian Adult Services Dept. CSLP seeking Spanish Committee Volunteers
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 19 Oct '21

19 Oct '21

Hi all, I received this message regarding the CSLP Spanish committees: ================= "Our wonderful committees are just getting started on CSLP's 2023 manual, and I am emailing to request more volunteers for the Spanish Committees. We need people for both the Spanish Idea Committee, which will be working on program ideas from now until the end of this year, and the Spanish Review Committee, which will review and provide feedback on drafted materials in early 2022. Please email this year's Spanish Manual Chair, Deborah Kinirons at <mailto:DKinirons@uniondalelibrary.org%3cmailto:DKinirons@uniondalelibrary.org> DKinirons(a)uniondalelibrary.org<mailto:DKinirons@uniondalelibrary.org>, if you know of anyone passionate about bilingual programming who might be interested in either committee." ================= If this opportunity is of interest, feel free to email Deborah (info above) directly to volunteer. Anyone from a Michigan public library may volunteer, as all are members of CSLP (LM pays your dues). You can volunteer even if your library doesn't regularly use the CSLP themes, as long as your supervisor approves. Cathy Lancaster Youth Services Coordinator Library of Michigan 702 W. Handicap parking
by Amy Knepp 19 Oct '21

19 Oct '21

Good morning: I am hoping one of my colleagues has already gone through this and has some words of wisdom. I am waiting for legal counsel to provide some guidance. My library currently has two handicap parking spots. I have an employee who needs one of the two spots. How have you handled this? I am thinking about adding additional handicap parking spots, but then should I assign her one? Label it for staff only? Thanks in advance for your help. -- Amy Knepp, Director Oscoda County Library

Please Take Action for MI Libraries this morning!
by Rachel Ash 19 Oct '21

19 Oct '21

MLA is opposed to House Bill 4536 (HB 4536) and calls library directors, staff, trustees and advocates to action. We have a very short window to voice our opposition. The House will be voting on HB 4536 this afternoon. Please contact your Michigan House member this morning to voice your opposition to HB 4536, remind them of the importance of penal fine revenue to libraries and that the Michigan Constitution states that penal fines should be used exclusively for libraries, and ask them to oppose HB 4536. To make things easy, MLA has drafted a letter of opposition for your use, or better yet, we encourage you to make a personal call to your House members’ office this morning. Visit our website to view more information about HB 4536 and take action now by emailing your Representative through our online form. Or use our "Call Your Representative" form for talking points and contact information - just enter your information, and your representative's phone number, plus background on HB 4536 and suggested talking points will populate on the screen. You can also add any relevant feedback from your call right in the form. Thank you in advance for taking action for Michigan Libraries!
