3D Printer Suggestions?
by David Edelman 05 Nov '21

05 Nov '21

Hello, We are considering a 3D printer for programing, as well as to potentially let patrons print their own items on (with supervision). I am new to this and see tons of reviews that can help guide me, but wonder what other libraries are successfully using. Budget is being determined but likely will be under $1,000. We might swing up to $1,500 for the "perfect" machine. I'd like something on the quiet side with the ability to print with multiple materials using standard filaments, nothing proprietary. If anyone has suggestions and can provide any insight, I would appreciate it. Please respond directly to me and I'll consolidate responses back to the list. dedelman(a)HastingsPublicLibrary.org Thanks! David Edelman Circulation Supervisor Hastings Public Library 227 E. "Registering with Michigan Works! not only fulfills a requirement to receive unemployment benefits, but it also provides unemployed workers with a great advantage in landing one of the 114,000 available jobs listed by employers on Pure Michigan Talent Connect," Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) Director Julia Dale said. "Work registration is also helpful for employers in recruiting job candidates at a time when hiring has been difficult." To register for work, claimants must complete the following two steps: * First, visit MiTalent.org to create a job seeker profile on Pure Michigan Talent Connect. * Second, meet with staff from a local Michigan Works! Service Center either virtually or in person at least one business day before the first certification (claimants must certify bi-weekly that they are eligible for benefits). Claimants will receive an email confirmation when registration is complete and verified. If claimants don't meet with Michigan Works! Service Center staff to verify their registration it could delay the payment of unemployment benefits. Claimants must register for work in addition to completing and reporting to the UIA their work search activities<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. Those filing for benefits must report at least one work search activity for each week they claim benefits. Work search activities include, but are not limited to, applying for jobs in person or online, attending job fairs, creating a profile or resume on a professional networking or job site such as MiTalent.org, and participating in online job search workshops or seminars. The Michigan Works! Association partners with UIA to assist claimants with getting back to work. The statewide network of MWA offices provides job-search resources, including job postings, job matches, hiring fairs, workshops, seminars, career resources and more. A claimant's work registration is valid for one year after their initial claim for unemployment benefits. Work registration is required with every new benefit year. Visit the UIA website at Michigan.gov/UIA<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> for more information about Work Registration. Youth & Teen Services Updates
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 05 Nov '21

05 Nov '21

CSLP The 5 winners have been named for the 2021 CSLP Teen Video Challenge! This national contest from the Collaborative Summer Library Program encouraged teens to create 60-second public service type videos that promote reading and library use to other teens, and interpret the CSLP theme of Tails and Tales. These videos show the amount of talent, creativity, and thoughtfulness that went into all of this year's submissions. You can see the winning videos here: https://www.cslpreads.org/2021-teen-video-challenge-winners/ They are fun, creative, and inspiring! The winning teens/teen teams each received a $200 cash prize from CSLP. Libraries are welcome to use any/all of the winning videos to help promote their summer program, reading, and library use in general. A shout out to New York: 4 of the 5 winning videos came from New York!! The fifth winner is out of Florida. Another shout out goes to the wonderful judging panel that made very difficult decisions to narrow down so many excellent, creative entries to these 5 winners! And special thanks to Luke Kralik of CSLP, who wrangled forms, updated the website, participated in the judging panel, sent out prizes, and more to make this contest happen again. 2021 will be the last year for this long-running contest. CSLP will be looking for ideas to engage with teens across the country during the summer in fresh new ways (have ideas? Please send 'em our way!). Many thanks to all of you that promoted this contest in your state and community! Ready to Read Michigan Presents: Reimaging School Readiness<https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/even…> January 20th and 27th, 2022 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET Please plan to join us live for this 2-part series, offered by the Bay Area Discovery Museum, created to introduce librarians to the research, practical implications, and resources offered in their Reimagining School Readiness toolkit. Research shows that beliefs about intelligence and ability impact one's performance and response to failure. Learn more about what research says, how to examine and change your own mindset, and what you can do to help support children's growth mindset and persistence through challenge. Do you wonder what research really says about how to support school readiness? Based on a comprehensive review of cognitive and developmental psychology, the key findings in Reimagining School Readiness aim to surface the skills and conditions that matter most for a child's success in school and life, and to guide educators and others (including families) in designing learning experiences and environments to support this development. Attendees will gain insights into the current research behind the skills and conditions that matter most for a child's success in school and life. The workshop will include an overview of BADM's Reimagining School Readiness Toolkit that library staff can use to supplement or create quality school readiness programming. Instructor: Michelle Wessman Randall, PhD, Head of Evaluation at the Bay Area Discovery Museum (BADM) and BADM staff. This project is made possible by grant funds from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the State of Michigan through the Library of Michigan. Vaccine Mandate proposed rule
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 05 Nov '21

05 Nov '21

Greetings! The OSHA regulatory language for the long- awaited vaccine mandate for large employers was just released this morning. https://www.osha.gov/coronavirus/ets2 https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2021-23643.pdf The rule is in a proposed stage and will not be effective until published in the Federal Register on Jan 4, 2022 And this is where it gets a bit complicated 😊 OSHA is the agency releasing and enforcing the rules for most states, and OSHA covers PRIVATE businesses – not government entities, so the rules they release will not generally apply to public libraries BUT Michigan is one of about 21 states that took advantage of an option in the OSHA act that enables states to draft and administer their own workplace safety plans and agencies in lieu of OSHA. These state plans must adopt OSHA standards- or standards that are stricter than OSHA’s. The states that do NOT have state plans (and therefore are under OSHA) pass separate workplace laws and regulations applicable to public employers and entities not covered by OSHA. The states WITH plans combine public and private employers and entities into their state plan. THEREFORE, even though OSHA’s rule as issued would not apply to Michigan public libraries, MiOSHA will have to adopt the rule and, depending on the language MiOSHA chooses, their rule would likely apply to public and private employers (and therefore public libraries). SO, there is really nothing we can say right now about what Mi public libraries will have to do to follow the new rule. We will have to wait for MiOSHA to issue their rule, which I am guessing will occur soon after the release of the OSHA rule. The language will likely be the same, but we won’t know for certain until it is out. HOWEVER: It is very likely that the requirements will not apply to libraries with less than 100 employees, so most public libraries will probably not be affected. (Note- If your library employees are “municipal employees” – township, county, city, etc., there may be more employees than you think- you will want to consult your attorney once the MiOSHA rule is issued). We will keep you updated as information is available. Libraries are encouraged to contact their attorneys with questions about specific situations. Have a great day! Clare Clare D.
