ALSC 2022 ALSC National Institute Programs: Call for Presentations PROPOSAL SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW OPEN! <https://airtable.com/shrstz2ywFZL4CP3V> The Association for Library Service to Children is currently seeking program proposals for the 2022 ALSC National Institute in Kansas City, MO, September 29-October 1, 2022. The submission site closes on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at 11:59pm CT. More details here: https://www.ala.org/alsc/confevents/institute/ed-programs. ALSC is hosting the 2021 Children's Literature Lecture Celebration, honoring the work of Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, online on Thursday, December 2, from 5:00-6:15pm ET. This is a free event, but registration is required. The Children's Literature Lecture Award honors an individual of distinction in the field of children's literature. Dr. Bishop is Professor Emerita at The Ohio State University. Her research, writing and teaching have informed and expanded conversations about representation of African Americans in children's literature and provided a critical framework for research and pedagogy. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Dr. Bishop will not deliver this year's lecture. In lieu of a lecture, a celebration in Dr. Bishop's honor will include a live, moderated panel discussing Dr. Bishop's impact; pre-recorded remarks from creators, thought leaders, and Dr. Bishop herself; and resources for attendees. Learn more & register at: https://www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/profawards/chll/2021-chll. YALSA YALSA's 2021 Teens Top Ten winners have been announced. The Teens' Top Ten is a "teen choice" list, where teens nominate and choose their favorite books of the previous year. Download an annotated list here: https://www.ala.org/yalsa/teenstopten. Summer Library Programming CSLP Summer Symposium registration is now open! Thursday, December 2nd from 11:30am-4:30pm ET - recordings will be made available on their website afterwards. To view the schedule and register, go to: www.CSLPreads.org/summer-symposium/<http://www.CSLPreads.org/summer-symposium/>. This manual contains all the programming resources, graphics, and book lists for the upcoming summer. I'm happy to share that CSLP has also updated their website and the manual is easier than ever to navigate. CSLP Summer Library Programming Manual is also now available for 2022's Oceans of Possibilities! To open & download the manual, you will need the access code - the access code for 2022 has been sent to all public library directors in Michigan via LM's LibPass portal on 9/27/21, having come to their inbox from "Mi(a)countingopinions.com<mailto:Mi@countingopinions.com>." If your director does not have that message, please reach out to me directly<mailto:lancasterc5@michigan.gov?subject=CSLP%20Manual%20Code> from an official library email account for the code. This program is supported in party by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Ready to Read Michigan Presents: Reimaging School Readiness January 20th and 27th, 2022 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET Space is extremely limited, and we ask that you plan to join us live for this 2-part series, offered by the Bay Area Discovery Museum, created to introduce librarians to the research, practical implications, and resources offered in their Reimagining School Readiness toolkit. If you can commit to attend live and participate both weeks, please register here<https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/even…>. Research shows that beliefs about intelligence and ability impact one's performance and response to failure. Learn more about what research says, how to examine and change your own mindset, and what you can do to help support children's growth mindset and persistence through challenge. Do you wonder what research really says about how to support school readiness? Based on a comprehensive review of cognitive and developmental psychology, the key findings in Reimagining School Readiness aim to surface the skills and conditions that matter most for a child's success in school and life, and to guide educators and others (including families) in designing learning experiences and environments to support this development. Attendees will gain insights into the current research behind the skills and conditions that matter most for a child's success in school and life. The workshop will include an overview of BADM's Reimagining School Readiness Toolkit that library staff can use to supplement or create quality school readiness programming. Instructor: Michelle Wessman Randall, PhD, Head of Evaluation at the Bay Area Discovery Museum (BADM) and BADM staff. This project is made possible by grant funds from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the State of Michigan through the Library of Michigan. Resources Bilingual Language Development<https://modules.ilabs.uw.edu/module/bilingual-language-development/> Learn about how children develop two or more languages and benefits of being bilingual. This module is form the Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences at the University of Washington. (approx. 20 minutes) Rekindling from Burnout: Lessons and Strategies for Public Library Workers<https://infopeople.org/civicrm/event/info?id=1009&reset=1> Thursday, November 18, 3:00 pm ET Library workers provide support for patrons in distress on a regular basis. A hard and busy day might leave us depleted. Though we feel the effects of secondary trauma, we may not have the tools to describe and process the experience, leading to our own emotional distress. Without a practice of self-care and a network of support and solidarity, the stress of service work can evolve into guilt, cynicism, numbness, chronic exhaustion, and diminished creativity-legitimate responses that contribute to burnout. At the end of this one-hour webinar, participants will: * Recognize and define signs of secondary trauma and burnout * Receive resources to address burnout and learn strategies for self-care * Brainstorm actions steps they can take at their library, either free or funded IPPSR presents: COVID-19 and K-12 Education Recovering from Learning Loss, Investing in Education Sign up now for Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021 Forum at Noon on Zoom<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furldefens…> The COVID-19 pandemic has created enormous challenges for public education and Michigan State University's Institute for Public Policy and Social Research explores those challenges on Wednesday, Nov. 17 through two new research reports. Homebound Survey Results are in!
by Shauna Quick 12 Nov '21

12 Nov '21

Hello! Thank you to all the libraries that took the homebound survey I sent out at the end of October! After compiling the data (with a little learning curve of the cool reporting feature of JotForm), here is the report: https://www.jotform.com/report/21312492772405109 *Cleaned data note: I did ask at the end of the survey if respondents were willing to be contacted/share this information with the listserv. The visualizations have anonymized data of all the responses, while the written responses of those who answered no to that question were removed. This has been so helpful and we appreciate all the information shared with us! Closing Soon: Director - Buffalo & Erie County Public Library (NY)
by Beth Barker 12 Nov '21

12 Nov '21

Director - Buffalo & Erie County Public Library (NY) The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library (B&ECPL) Board of Trustees seeks a politically savvy collaborative team leader with executive experience and a commitment to excellence as its new Director. As the recipient of the 2021 Penguin Random House Library Award for Innovation, the B&ECPL is leading the charge in providing thoughtful and engaging services. The Board comprises 15 members, with ten appointed by the Erie County Executive and five appointed by the Mayor of Buffalo and works collaboratively with the Director to inspire and engage an organization of over 650 staff with a $29.3 million budget serving over 950,000 residents. Guided by a new 5-year plan, the B&ECPL provides services to all residents of Erie County through its Central Library, 8 branches in the City of Buffalo, 22 contract member libraries operating 28 facilities throughout the County, and the Library on Wheels Bookmobile. The B&ECPL serves as a center of information, education, culture, and entertainment for the residents of Erie County and embraces its mission to "Connect our diverse community with library resources that enrich, enlighten and entertain." Key initiatives include supporting innovative services and resources; ensuring opportunities for digital inclusion, continued education, and workforce development; maintaining and strengthening relationships within the community and among member libraries; increasing the library's visibility in the County and New York State; and promoting the library's rare and special collections through popular exhibits and displays. Our Community: Situated on the beautiful eastern shore of Lake Erie, Buffalo is the second largest city in New York and serves as the hub of Erie County with countless cultural, social, and educational opportunities. Buffalo boasts the country's oldest urban parks system, encompassing 211 parks and recreation facilities for outdoor enjoyment throughout the year, and is a known destination for American architecture history, including the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero and Eliel Saarinen, H.H. Richardson, and Frederick Law Olmsted. Buffalo has recently undergone a remarkable transformation with a redeveloped waterfront, revitalized neighborhoods, and a growing craft beer scene. Erie County and Buffalo both increased in population in the 2020 Census. Dubbed "One of the Great Eating Cities" by food critic Michael Stern, Buffalo is a perfect blend of traditional bites and contemporary fare with seven different food crawls including the Buffalo Wing Trail. It's no surprise Forbes listed the city as a top ten travel destination for families, with attractions like the new Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Explore & More Museum, the Buffalo Zoo, Canalside, and the Buffalo Museum of Science. Home to the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres, and renowned cultural institutions such as Kleinhans Music Hall and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Western New York has something for everyone. The communities of Buffalo and Erie County are filled with proud, passionate, and diverse residents who make the region a vibrant place to call home. Responsibilities: Responsibilities include but are not limited to recommending policies and reporting current activities and measurable results to the Library Board of Trustees; approving operational policies for application within the Central Library, Buffalo Branches, and all contract member libraries; determining performance standards for library services; approving a budget to be recommended to the Library Board, defending the budget before County Executive and County Legislature; negotiating and communicating with State, County, and local officials on all Library matters; establishing collaboration with community organizations and committees; participating in the work of local, State, and national library associations; and serving as the spokesperson for the Library to the media, promoting the public relations program for the library system. Qualifications: A master's degree in library science from an accredited ALA library school, and ten (10) years of professional library experience, five (5) years of which must have been as head of a library system (public, academic, school or other) or a large public library and three (3) additional years in an administrative capacity; or a satisfactory equivalent combination of training and experience. The hiring salary range is $160,000 - $190,000 (with placement negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications) and an excellent fringe benefits package, as well as participation in the New York State Retirement System.
