Shifting Landscapes: Teaching uncomfortable truths in the classroom
by Thomas Trahey 24 Jan '22

24 Jan '22

Tonight's Shifting Landscapes program will feature history teachers from Ludington's High School and Middle School. Amber Nasson and Todd Schipper will share their techniques for teaching about sensitive topics in the classroom. People naturally shy away from talking about uncomfortable subjects. But talking about the tough stuff makes children feel safer. These topics are vital to deepen students’ understanding of our world. Children deserve to learn about difficult subjects from knowledgeable, compassionate adults who will keep them safe. This is a live/virtual hybrid meeting and will begin at 7pm tonight on Zoom and at LACA in downtown Ludington. Join on Zoom at mcdl.pub/sl-zoom. Tonight's program will conclude the third topic in the Shifting Landscapes program. Upcoming topics include Race/Racism (Feb 7, 14, 21), Truth in Politics (Mar 7, 14, 21), and Economics (Apr 4, 11, 18). View previous presentations on The 1619 Project and Critical Race Theory at mcdl.pub/CRT and mcdl.pub/1619. Keep updated on more Shifting Landscapes programs and be notified when recordings are available by registering at mcdl.pub/sl-register. More information can be found at mcdl.pub/SL or by emailing ttrahey(a)mcdlibrary.org. -- Thomas Trahey Mason County District Library Head of Circulation 231-843-8465

Pickle Island
by Shauna Quick 21 Jan '22

21 Jan '22

Hi! I hope my subject line caught your attention. :D I have a patron who is looking for a book from her Grandma's childhood (1930-1950?). She thinks it was called, "The Mystery Of Pickle Island". Sadly, we don't have more information either. Perhaps you have seen or heard of a similar title on pure happenstance? Any help is much appreciated! EPIC released a report<https://www.the74million.org/oster-study-finds-learning-loss-far-greater-in…> on the impacts of the pandemic on learning in Michigan. Both math and reading achievement lagged during the pandemic, and additional time spent via remote learning led to lower achievement for both subjects as well. Economist Emily Osterhas found similar evidence supporting the idea that remote instruction has led to lower achievement (MSU Today, The 74).
