Position Summary Under the general direction of the CIO, this position has primary oversight of library collection management and works in collaboration with the reference and instruction librarian to provide library instruction and in-depth research support for faculty, students, staff, and other library users. The Collection and Reference Services Librarian participates in appropriate faculty and professional activities including serving on college and departmental committees. This is a full-time, twelve-month, benefits-eligible, administrative staff/non-teaching faculty appointment. Responsibilities * Manages and assesses monographic and serial collections in print and electronic formats * Supervises the ordering of all materials and manages the life cycle of licensed resources * Maintains vendor relations, negotiates pricing and licensing agreements, and coordinates cooperative collection development with other libraries, consortia and statewide initiatives * Catalogs and processes materials in multiple formats and maintains the integrity of the online catalog * Collaborates with the Digital Services Librarian to ensure catalog and electronic resources are available and bibliographic data are accurate * Determines policies and procedures for library acquisitions and collection management * Provides seasonal library instruction * Provides support for student and faculty research * Serve as evening and weekend supervisor as scheduled * Performs additional duties as assigned by the CIO Qualifications The successful candidate will have a ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree and will also demonstrate many of the following skills, abilities, and characteristics: * Demonstrated commitment to service; experience in acquisitions, cataloging, and collection development and familiarity with current trends; * Knowledge of trends and applications in electronic resource management; * Experience with print and electronic serials acquisitions and management; * Knowledge of review and evaluation resources for library materials in all formats; * Familiarity with current reference resources; * Knowledge of information literacy practices and principles; * Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation, and organization skills; * Ability to work independently and in a team; * Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and apply skills quickly; * Evidence of flexibility, enthusiasm, and collegiality; * Adept at handling multiple responsibilities; * The ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff, and * Preferably, some familiarity with Alma Library Management System and an understanding of the academic objectives of a residential liberal arts college. Physical requirements of the position include ability to work in a library/office environment with extensive use of computer and telephone; ability to lift and carry up to ten pounds; ability to read and write and to handle and process both paper and electronic documents; ability to move between and within campus buildings. The topic of how to talk with children and young people about scary news and major world events has become one of our most-requested topics for speaking and workshops. As I write this, a team of three educators is in the Fred Rogers Archive reading letters children wrote to Mister Rogers about their difficulties and fears. What they read and learn will inform their work supporting children and families recovering from trauma. As Fred Rogers said, "Although children's 'outsides' may have changed a lot over the years, their inner needs have remained very much the same." The particular difficult news we encounter may change from season to season and decade to decade, but the fundamental need we all have to feel loved and safe always remains. We are glad to re-release this free resource today, with a few additional messages from Fred Rogers' work. We hope the words in this document will be an encouragement to all caring adults. You are "the helpers" who can do the essential work of letting children know their feelings and questions matter and that there are caring people everywhere who will do all we can to keep them safe. Toy Swap Advice

Hi All! We are hosting our first Toy Swap this November and I wanted to see if anyone has any advice on how to run things. We've done a Halloween Costume Swap successfully the past few years, but this feels very different! I have some general questions below, but feel free to let me know as much or little that you think is helpful. - I wasn't planning on limiting the age ranges of toys - right? - How did you sort them? By age, brand, type, etc? - I'm planning on patrons dropping off used toys the week before, Monday-Friday, and having the swap be Saturday-Sunday - People who donate toys ahead of time get "Early Bird Access" tickets and can come the first few hours to take what they'd like (however many you donated you can take out), but after that anyone and everyone is welcome to come and grab as much as they want - I said "Please do not donate toys that are dirty, missing pieces, or no longer work." Am I missing anything? - - Did you accept stuffed animals? - - Was there anything you didn't accept? Anything you *wished* you hadn't accepted? - Did you have batteries on hand to test anything, or did you just assume that everything worked? The Mid-Michigan Digital Practitioners<https://midmichdp.wordpress.com/> (MMDP) will come together for an in-person meeting on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at the Library of Michigan in Lansing. As with all MMDP meetings, we will bring together a wide range of professionals and students engaged in creating and curating digital collections in Michigan and the surrounding region, including librarians, archivists, museum curators, historians, students, educators, and more. The goal of this meeting is to provide an opportunity for the MMDP community to share knowledge and make connections. New attendees are always welcome! Submit Your Proposals for the 2025 MMDP Meeting The MMDP Planning Group invites you to submit your proposal for our November meeting. Proposals will be accepted for sessions in the following lengths and formats: * Presentation: A single topic or project presented by up to three (3) presenters. Presentations will be slotted into either 30, 45, or 60-minute sessions, including time for Q&A. (30-60 minutes) * “Birds-of-a-Feather” Break-out Discussion Topics: Open sessions for discussion around a particular topic or theme. This session provides an opportunity to begin or get feedback on in-progress projects, collaborate on addressing challenges, and discuss thought-provoking questions. (approximately 30 minutes) * Demonstrations: Guided training sessions on a specific tool, technique, workflow, or concept. (10 minutes) * Lightning Talks: High-energy talks on any topic held in succession in a single session. (5 minutes) * Poster: Present research or project findings summarized using brief written statements and graphic materials, such as photographs, charts, graphs, and/or diagrams mounted on poster board. * Panel: A discussion of up to three (3) presenters on a unified topic, plus a moderator. Panels will be slotted into 60-minute sessions, leaving a minimum of 15 minutes for Q&A and discussion at the end of each session. (60 minutes) This is a great opportunity to reuse a poster shared at another conference! We welcome proposals from anyone, but are particularly interested in proposals from smaller institutions and students. For Presentations, Demonstrations, and Lightning Talks, we invite presenters to join us in-person or via a pre-recorded video. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate live-streamed presentations.
