Gather ‘Round the Table with Teens: A Food Literacy Workshop Food literacy is essential for teens to understand and learn about food in a positive way, including food skills and best food practices. Library staff that work with tweens & teens will benefit from this workshop designed to guide libraries to in turn support teens as they explore the impact of food on so many levels of their lives. Food Education Consultant Rebecca Antill will provide in-person workshops on how to plan and deliver nutrition & cooking programs for teens, featuring how to do so with minimal kitchen access. As a former librarian, Rebecca will offer a tailored learning experience that will equip library staff to offer food programming of all levels at their libraries. Basic health and safety information, kitchen classroom management, culinary skills and community partners will all be discussed as participants cook and share time together. They can’t concentrate; their physical, social, and emotional well-being suffers; and they don’t participate successfully in library activities. Every summer, 21.4 million US children who receive free or reduced-price school meals1,including 13.8 million who live in food-insecure households2, lose access to the daily breakfast and lunch served in school. During the summer, many students also lack the other benefits of school, including engagement, learning, adults present, a temperature-controlled environment – things libraries can provide. The USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), also known as SUN Meals, makes free healthy meals and snacks available to young people in communities with high rates of poverty. Many public libraries already participate as meal or snack sites, or provide programming to nearby feeding sites. The action can be as small or grand as you’d like — even small acts can make a big difference! Your story must have a catchy title, a protagonist that takes an action to make a change, and a beginning, middle, and end. A scoring rubric will be provided. Judging will take place in early August 2025 after the contest closes on July 31, 2025. We're not sure yet how many judges we will need, since we're unsure how many entries we will get. We're hoping that judges will read/score no more than 20 entries each. There are no qualifications needed here, just a willingness to read the entries and use the scoring rubric to assess them. We will whittle the list down to the Top 10 and from there, Katherine Applegate, our Summer Reading Champion, will choose the winner. Announcing the new Michigan Memories

The Michigan Service Hub is pleased to announce the release of the newly redesigned Michigan Memories <https://michmemories.org/>, a website that enables users to search the online collections of cultural memory institutions all around the state! Michigan Memories is the Michigan-centric counterpart to the Digital Public Library of America <https://dp.la/> (DPLA), with access to over one million records, a fresh look, and some important additions: - A new blog <https://michiganmemories.library.wmich.edu/blog> with RSS support; - An Exhibits <https://michmemories.org/exhibits> section that highlights interesting and memorable photographs and other records while exploring Michigan’s history; - An Education <https://michiganmemories.library.wmich.edu/education> section that explores different themes in our state’s history with resources to help teachers use primary sources in their classrooms. The Michigan Service Hub was created in 2015 as a collaborative project by the Library of Michigan, Wayne State University, the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Western Michigan University, and the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services. bike lock for checkout

Hello everyone, My director and I were just talking about adding a bicycle lock to our collection, as we have a lot of folks biking to the library, especially visitors in the summer who rent from the bike shop in our village. We get a fair amount of questions from folks coming in if they can bring their bikes into the library, which is against our policy for safety reasons, but we would love to offer this as an option. Does your library offer a bike lock for patron checkout? Brands/kinds to seek out or avoid are much appreciated! As are any pros and cons you've experienced with this. Sources for Translation of Yiddish Document into English

Have you tried using Thriftbooks? I know we use that here at our library for the books leftover from our book sale and I've used it personally as well and always had a great experience with them. I'm not sure exactly how good they are when it comes to what they will accept and how much is gained through it but perhaps it's looking into. Hope this helps! We divide and repackage most of our seeds, but quantity depends on the kind of seed. For larger seeds that are easy to count, like beans and squash, about 6-12 seeds per pack. Some more 'rare' seeds it may average less per pack so that I can get them out to more growers. For others that I have a large quantity of, it can average more. For small seeds that are harder to count, like mint or chamomile, I will pour out a commercial packet and divide them into smaller piles. I find an index card works well for this. I also use a pill counter tray. We accept donations — home grown seed, commercial packs, opened packages, leftovers. We try to encourage seed saving and home grown seed, as well as any open-pollinated seed. We divide and repackage most of our seeds, but quantity depends on the kind of seed. For larger seeds that are easy to count, like beans and squash, about 6-12 seeds per pack. Some more 'rare' seeds it may average less per pack so that I can get them out to more growers. For others that I have a large quantity of, it can average more. For small seeds that are harder to count, like mint or chamomile, I will pour out a commercial packet and divide them into smaller piles. I find an index card works well for this. I also use a pill counter tray. We accept donations — home grown seed, commercial packs, opened packages, leftovers. We try to encourage seed saving and home grown seed, as well as any open-pollinated seed. We don't need print management- our printer is set up for Papercut. We don't even need the option for reservations as computer usage is down from years ago and we rarely have anyone waiting. We're looking for a program that will lock PCs until a patron logs in with their library card or a guest pass, will block cardholders who don't have computer permissions, will automatically log a patron off when their time expires, will automatically shut down at the end of the night, and will give me usage reports. Being able to view a patron's screen would be a bonus. What does your library use, and how do you like it? What is support like- are they responsive? Easy to work with? Has anyone recently worked with Librarica's CASSIE? Our previous IT person worked with them a decade ago and had nothing good to say about the setup process or their support, but it's been quite a while and staff and technology change. I'm also interested in mConsole, but have been having trouble getting a hold of them, and that doesn't bode well. I appreciate any opinions! I can collect and share replies if anyone is interested. At my seed library we accept donations from businesses, seed companies, seed swaps, and home gardeners. Part of the mission of our seed library is to educate the public about saving seeds and encouraging them to grow for the seed library to help it become self-sustaining. The amount of donations ebbs and flows, but has been quite strong the last few years. We support the seed library with lots of programming. I try to estimate how many seeds per packet based on how many seeds will produce something to eat and hopefully they can save a few seeds and increase the quantity. These are sample packets, not enough to grow a giant garden. We have to share the wealth with as many people as possible. Beans and peas 20 per pack. Same for corn, enough to grow a block of (4) 4' rows Squash, cucumbers, melons - enough for 2 hills or 4 feet of trellis so about 10 seeds Packets of small seeds like carrots and lettuce get a healthy pinch that usually has 30-40 seeds Beets, chard, parsnips around 16-20, enough for a 4' row. Okra, roselle, sunflowers 10 or so. Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, peppers: 8-12 Most flowers at least 10-15.
