Michigan libraries have requested approximately 5,000 copies of the 2026 book for our Smart Money Kids Read program to date -- and has capacity to give a lot more! Participating libraries agree to provide money-themed children's programming during Financial Literacy Month, April 1-30, 2025, utilizing How Do You Spend? for our SMKR program, supplemented by fun, age-appropriate programming. Librarians are so creative! Most libraries do in-person story time events, using our chosen book, along with coloring sheets, finger puppet plays, songs, rhymes, crafts, and more! Consider partnering with a local credit union on these events as well! Michigan credit unions not only provide funding for the Smart Money Kids Read program, but also enjoy participating in, and helping to provide program support, for such youth events. This year's book is Cinders McLeod's How Do YOU Spend? If your library has already submitted your request for free books for kids, please do not submit another as it makes things very confusing! The State of Michigan's Department of Technology, Management, and Budget<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Fdtmb/1/0…> (DTMB), the state department that manages and maintains state-owned facilities and properties, has contracted with Kalamazoo-based Miller Davis<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.miller-davis.com%2F/1/0…> to make some well-needed updates to the exterior of the MLHC. The Miller Davis staff and their subcontractors started on the east wing of the building in October to clean the exterior and tuckpoint the stonework. They have since moved over to the west side of the building where the Library of Michigan is located. The construction staff and equipment are primarily located by the building loading docks but be aware if they are doing work in more public-facing areas of the building. Next year, work will continue throughout next year on both sides of the building with repair and replacement of the building's glass ceiling. Announcements will be made on the Library of Michigan's website and social media accounts to any changes to open hours that are required to accommodate any of the construction work. Happy Saturday everyone, You're invited to join the Inclusive Libraries Conversation Group (aka Inclusive Libraries Group) in which we meeting once a month to learn, get ideas and inspiration, and hear from various state and social services in Michigan, and people with disabilities, to help us plan and offer accessible programs, services and more at our respective libraries. It's an informal group and a safe space to ask questions and broaden our perspectives. I also share upcoming webinars I come across that are relevant to accessibility and inclusion. We are taking the holiday months off but will start meeting again in January 2026. At least I did, growing up as a kid in the late 1960s, I assumed that snowmobiles had been around forever! Publishers & Authors Association (UPPAA) has scheduled author events with winners of the/UP Notable Book List/. Through the years, the challenge of powered transportation in the snow has been met with ideas from explorers, creative inventors and small companies, all with new ideas - often unique and sometimes successful. The name "snowmobile" was trademarked in 1917, but there were snow travel ideas before that date and certainly thousands more since. He purchased that Cat from the first Arctic Cat dealer in Green Bay, a local shoe repair shop which had a total available inventory of two machines. Jorgensen was fortunate to become a riding member of the pioneer cross-country snowmobile group, the Peninsula Pathfinders of Upper Michigan. He participated in the club's first three long-distance rides, including the 1970 trip across the giant Mackinac Bridge which connects lower Michigan to the Upper Peninsula. Although he owned the Arctic Cat, he had been convinced to ride an Eskimo snowmobileand it may have been the only time an Eskimo sled crossed the Big Mac. He does not tell his history in a systematic way with footnotes and large bibliography like an academic. Instead, he uses many old photographs and rather rambles through his story in a leisurely way like a Parisian /flâneur /or gentleman expert on the feature of being a Yooper man of the North.
