Participating children receive a take-and-make craft kit. June 5-Kent County Mobile Library; June 12 - Walmart Tractor-Trailer; June 26 - Delaware State Trooper and Kent County Sheriff Open Art Studio: June 22 - All ages were welcomed for an "open studio" with professional illustrator and artist Christy Shaffer, to create a tiny painting. A variety of materials were available to complete a tiny masterpiece. Completed canvases are held for display in Kent County Public Library's Second Annual Tiny Art Gallery Exhibit (July-August). Smokey Bear Story!Time: Summer Reading Program participants were encouraged to additionally register for the National Book Challenge sponsored by Smokey Bear, who visited Story!Time led by Robin Agar on June 27. A bit nervous, I wasn't sure if I would be able to pull off a cooking class of any sort, even though I cook and bake for fun or when we need treats for events. I will say that this idea had been in the back of my mind before, but I never thought it would take off whatsoever: cooking dishes from video games, anime, movies, TV shows, etc.! We have a Kitchen a la Cart<https://protect2.fireeye.com/v1/url?k=31323334-50bba2bf-31367a34-4544474f56…> that hadn't been used in a while, the first task was to learn how to use it and see if it could handle possible dishes we would create. I would also create recipe cards for each session and put excess cards out by the front desk for any patron to take home and try on their own! First up was the test run: Persona 4 Rainy Day Beef Bowl Challenge. My first big step into the culinary world was through the Persona video game, I was 14; the dish was a towering beef bowl (gyudon) that was filled with vegetables and flavors that I had never had! And yet, this dish became one of my go-to meals when wanting to make food for friends and family. It was easily created using the kitchen cart and only one small frying pan. I was now excited for the program to start! Our first official dish for LVL Up Lunch was Brock's Cream Stew from the first Pokémon movie. It always looked delicious and having made it before, I was certain the kids would love it. They worked together and had fun prepping and cooking, the finished result was amazing! Perfect consistency, perfect texture! Our next dish would be requested by one of our tiny chefs: Ratatouille. While it was one that took more time than expected, it was completely worth it! All of them picked what they wanted to work on, took turns when needed and practiced their knife skills! We also got to use the Ninja blender, which was one thing the kids wanted to see work. Another one for the books, as it looked visually appealing and the taste of roasted veggies in the sauce was undeniably good! With quite a few horror fans amongst us, our most recent creation was Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, this being the easiest one we have ever done! Consisting of homemade pizza sauce and no-yeast dough, our cooks did a great job following the recipe, following directions and got to have some fun putting their own touch on their pizzas! If there is something I have learned so far from the kids being in this program, it's that they love learning, staying busy and just have fun being kids overall. It is rare to also have cooks that are normally glued to phones or computers actually jump in and participate, especially our tween/teen patrons! It feels good knowing that they are excited to cook and try something new. LVL Up Lunch appealed to our teens, knowing that they are making something from a game or a movie that they love! Since I'm a fan of pop culture, I'm happy that I can share my interest and teach our library youth how to cook screen-to-plate meals! Full-Time Library Director at Crooked Tree District Library Opportunity: Crooked Tree District Library (CTDL) seeks a knowledgeable, motivated, and amiable individual to serve as our next Library Director. CTDL's main library is in Walloon Lake, with a branch seven miles south in Boyne Falls. The area is renowned for its quiet outdoor lifestyle and recreational opportunities, attracting a growing population of visitors year-round. Nearby towns include Petoskey, Charlevoix, and Boyne City, offering a variety of cultural, historic, and recreational venues. CTDL is a Class 2 library serving Melrose and Boyne Valley townships and contract areas of Warner, Hudson, and Chandler townships. According to 2020 Census data, the total service area population - which increases considerably in the summer months - was approximately 5,100. The successful candidate will be a welcoming, knowledgeable, innovative leader who understands the Library and its community and can lead the Library in fulfilling its mission: creating opportunities for the public to communicate ideas and enrich personal lives through a diverse collection of books and electronic materials. Key Expectations: The Library Director serves as the chief executive officer of the Library, reporting directly to the Board of Trustees. The Director is responsible for all library functions, including: * Day-to-day operations * Delivery of library services and programming * Strategic planning and budgeting * Supervision and management functions with resourcefulness, creativity, and mature judgment The Library Director also serves as the public persona of the Library, representing it as a warm, welcoming, and creative hub for its patrons. The Director is expected to enrich the community with innovative ideas and engaging programming, fostering an environment that supports learning, curiosity, and cultural enrichment. The Director works in partnership with the Board to ensure that the organization fulfills its mission and creates strategies that ensure its future success. The Director is accountable for the programmatic and fiscal integrity of the organization in keeping with the philosophy set by the Board of Trustees. The Library Director works with considerable independence, subject to board policies and directives, but is expected to demonstrate resourcefulness, initiative, creativity, and sound judgment in the performance of duties. The Director will work full time, including some evening and Saturday hours. Essential Qualifications: The Director must demonstrate leadership, organizational, and administrative skills, including leading and directing professionals, working collaboratively with budget planning and control, staff development, fundraising, board development, and public relations. It’s a great time to start or carry on traditions that tie family history to present activities. Discovering more about your family tree can be done via a general search. Access to MyHeritage Library Edition is available both in libraries and at home within Michigan, so research is convenient for everyone. Petoskey District Library Saturday August 3, 11am-3pm Carnegie Building The Petoskey District Library is hosting a Human Library(c) event on Saturday, August 3, from 11:00am-3:00pm. In the best sense of the word, the Human Library(c) is a library of people and their experiences with prejudice. However, instead of paper books, actual people are on loan for conversations. The concept is about acknowledging and challenging prejudice that we all carry towards one another. For that reason, the Human Library(c) creates a safe space for conversation where topics subject to taboo, marginalization, or stigmatization can be openly addressed without condemnation. The people acting as Books have directly or indirectly been exposed to prejudice, bias, or discrimination based on aspects of their person, heritage, or life experiences. At the Human Library(c), we invite in all questions and our Books engage in sharing their personal experiences with readers. Stop by and borrow an open Book for a conversation about prejudices and diversity. The concept is simple: show up and see what topics are available to borrow. Once you have chosen a Book that you would like to talk to, you can sit down and have an open conversation and learn about people that may be different than you.
