Starting a Volunteer Program

I've found Carla Campbell Lehn's *From Library Volunteer to Library Advocate* useful in thinking about the purpose of a volunteer program, but am seeking feedback from other libraries (especially Class 2 and 3 libraries) on the following topics: - What kinds of tasks do you give volunteers? - How do you delineate supplementing vs supplanting staff responsibilities? - Do you allow volunteers to come into contact with patron information? Electric Vehicle Chargers at Libraries Thursday, July 11 10:00 - 11:30 AM Are you interested in exploring how to implement a public EV Charging station in your community? Is your library ready to jump at the chance to offer patrons alternative fueling options when they visit? MLA is pleased to offer a free one-and-a-half-hour educational session on Zoom on Thursday, July 11 at 10:00 AM for anyone interested in, considering, or just wanting to know more about the planning, procurement, and installation of EV Chargers at Michigan libraries. This is a high-level overview of the process and benefits of electric vehicle charging infrastructure including financing, infrastructure, maintenance and funding options, hardware/software and power needs, and the return on investment. This session will also outline a competitive federal grant through the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant (Community Program) that is available through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to cover 80% of the installation costs. (Round 2 is now available offering up to $1.3 Billion in funding – Application minimum: $500,000.) Looking for Suggestions/Recommendations

Hello The Charlotte Community Library, located in Charlotte, MI is thinking of moving our compact shelving unit, currently located in our staff area, to another place in our building. I have attached a picture of what this unit looks like for reference. The middle shelf is movable to create a walkway down either side. High capacity shelfs is another term that may be used to describe them. I have reached out to Library Design to get a quote/proposal from them about this type of move including uninstalling and reinstalling. I would appreciate any suggestions or recommendations of different companies that any you may have used for this type of move. Thank you! State of Michigan Budget

Never wanting to keep MLA members in the dark, we are finally able to share the state of Michigan budget with you (links below for the House Fiscal Agency Conference Reports for the General Omnibus Budget and the School Aid Fund). With little to no advance public review of the budget, in the early morning hours today, the FY25 State of Michigan budget (beginning October 1) has finally passed through the conference committee, the Senate and the House. The budget now awaits the Governor’s signature before the July 1st deadline. (Just as a reminder, she also has line item veto power, so nothing is in stone until she signs.) While we haven’t had time to digest the entire budget, we have highlighted some of the items that we have been watching including (DRUMROLL PLEASE) a $1,000,000 increase to State Aid bringing it to $16,567,700. And while we didn’t get everything we asked for in the budget…your voices were heard and communications with your state legislators made a difference! Advocacy is a full year commitment – it never ends, so keep up the good work. We are #StrongerTogether. MLA will share more details soon on other MLA priorities.
