The Wayne State School of Information Sciences requests nominations for its 2024 Professional Service Award. THE PROFESSIONAL SERVICE AWARD acknowledges Wayne State alumni and other individuals who have made significant and sustained contributions to the library/information community during their careers and have supported the School of Information Sciences. The Professional Service Award recognizes individuals who, for example, have been leaders in state, regional, and/or national professional associations, and/or have held leadership roles in activities related to their positions. Recipients of SIS awards are selected by a School committee made up of faculty, staff, and students. For my part, we do get patrons at my employer asking about KotFM and I'm not surprised at this. By comparison, "The Irishman" was distributed by Netflix and exclusive to its service, which surprised me when it actually came out on physical media (Wikipedia article quote: "...[it] received director-approved special edition DVD and Blu-ray releases by The Criterion Collection on November 24, 2020"). I also had the same reaction when the films "Prey" and "Pam & Tommy", both originally exclusive to Hulu, came out on physical media. My personal estimate is that <10% at most of films on Netflix and other services might see a physical release. However, when it comes to anything to do with Apple and their films, I've learned not to hold my breath in general for any. FOML 2023 Merit Award Winners

FOML is pleased to announce the following Merit Award winners for their work in 2023. Category of Friends groups serving a population greater than 12,000: Friends of Amy Van Andel established a quarterly rotating art exhibit in the Amy Van Andel Library to diversify the cultural amenities offered by the library, to draw additional patrons to the Library and to provide a venue giving local artists public exposure of their work. They provided a detailed application laying our their plan for implementing this exhibit, including Friends, library staff and the community. Category of Friends groups serving a population less than 12,000: Friends of Huntington Ridge/Pleasant Ridge Library held a Freedom to Read Fest. The event focused on the right to read in a free society. The evening event included interactive activities, a banned books display, matching quotes to a banned book, banned books bingo, and a mugshot display to take a picture with the booking info "I read banned books." The goal was to provide awareness of book banning in Michigan libraries, The also sold Freedom to Read t-shirts which were a big hit. Our annual awards program recognizes and celebrates one organization and two individuals who are champions of public humanities. The deadline for nominations is March 1. Hi Barbara, We used to have an air fryer in our Library of Things collection at the Royal Oak Public library, but we removed all of our cooking items because they were either returned dirty ( we do not have a dishwasher here and so there is no way to properly sanitize items that are returned this way). Also, many of our items like cookie cutters did not circulate very well. The air fryer that we had did circulate, but it was not always clean upon return. I suppose if you have a dishwasher at your library and a system in place to check for items that are returned dirty and to clean them, then it might not be a problem. We decided not to keep them. I sent the following email on 2/21/2024 regarding the FOML Annual Meeting. I have not seen it come through yet. Did you receive it? Please post: Friends of Michigan Libraries Annual Membership Meeting, April 11, 10 am FOML is excited about the Annual Meeting for 2024! For the first time we are offering a blended meeting. It will be held at the Library of Michigan in Lansing for those who are close enough to attend in person. If that is too far for you to travel, join us via Zoom. In the morning, everyone will hear Debbie Mikula, MLA Executive Director, talking about “Library Friends & Right to Read: What Should We Know?” and meet our 2024 Merit Award winners. We will break for lunch and those on Zoom can raid your refrigerators. Participants on-site have the option of having lunch catered by Panera. There will be 4 choices including two vegetarian selections. Lunch will cost an additional $15 that will be added to the registration fee when you register. Those who do not wish to have lunch, select the “No Lunch” option and bring your own. For the afternoon, on-site participants will engage in Table Talk and get to meet and share ideas with the other participants. Those on Zoom will have a Connect with Friends session to share ideas and discuss issues with their Zoom neighbors. Can’t wait to get together again!
