One Seed, One State Registration is open!

Hello! The MI Seed Library Network is happy to announce that registration is now open for the 2024 One Seed, One State initiative. Our selection this year is 'Mammoth Long Island' dill. Our first herb selection, dill is an easy to grow garden plant that has a high success rate for beginning seed savers. Hopefully that will mean more returns to your seed library! Did you know that Michigan grows more pickling cucumbers than any other state? Dill is an important ingredient that is required by the many processing facilities in our state. Seeds will be shipped beginning late January, and being a crew of one I can only ship a limited number of kits per week. You will have them in plenty of time to publicize the program before planting time begins in May. Some of the materials are still being prepared, but the color poster is ready now and can be viewed at https://miseedlibrary.org/?page_id=389 Each library will receive enough dill seeds for 60 packets. It is totally up to each library how many packets you want to distribute. Fewer packets = larger portions. Digital files for the poster, brochure, seed packet labels, and instructions will be emailed to all registrants when the seeds are shipped and will be available on the MSLN webpage within the next few weeks. Each library is required to provide their own seed packets. Individual seed libraries please register using this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd6nPiqOdkSVgBZVQaO6j7JA8c-ta6_XHx… Some library systems prefer to receive and handle OSOS materials for their branch seed libraries at a central location. You receive enough seeds so each branch has enough for 60 packets. Library Director - Flower Mound Public Library (TX) The Town of Flower Mound seeks a dynamic and talented leader to become the next Director of Library Services of the Flower Mound Public Library (TX)<https://www.flower-mound.com/135/Library>. Reporting to the Assistant Town Manager and working alongside the Cultural Arts Commission, the director is responsible for a $2.2 million budget, a single 40,000 square-foot building, and 23.5 FTE of staff. The library has earned The Texas Municipal Library Director's Association Achievement of Excellence Award for the past nineteen years and offers patrons a place to explore their creativity through the Creation Lab makerspace. With a supportive city government, growing population, and an experienced staff, the new director will be well positioned to make an impact right away. Key initiatives include the analysis of a growing service area, fully utilizing a recently renovated and expanded building, exploration of RFID tagging and smart returns, and completion of the 2024 strategic plan. Responsibilities: The Director of Library Services plans and directs the day-to-day operations of the town's library services; coordinates the library activities and programs to meet the needs of the patron; prepares and administers the departmental budget; ensures effective operational and financial management through forecasting, reviewing budgetary submissions, procurement and control of grants and other funds, and auditing expenditure; develops, evaluates, and monitors the goals and objectives and the long-range library service plans, policies, and procedures to carry out the mission of the library; prepares monthly and annual statistical reports for the Town Council, Texas State Library, and other state, regional, and county agencies, as required; and promotes the library resources through all media available to include social media, print media, television, and other available resources. Qualifications A master's degree in library science from a library school accredited by the American Library Association, five or more years of municipal library work experience, and two or more years of supervisory experience are required. The final candidate must submit to and pass a post-offer, non-regulated drug test and thorough background checks (including criminal history). Seeking Beacon Hotspot information, how well they work

Happy New Year Everyone! We were hoping to gather some information about the Beacon Hotspots available for purchase through TechSoup. We currently have four Kajeet Hotspots and the funding will end for their covered cost at the end of January. We were informed about the Beacon Hotspots through TechSoup. My Board wanted me to ask other libraries who have had them and ask what you would rate the service the Beacon's provide. One of our Board members saw a few bad reviews about the Beacon models and suggested that we find out first-hand accounts of their usage from other libraries that have them. Smokey the bear reading Challenge

Dear Librarians, Are any of your libraries participating in the Smokey the Bear Reading challenge? If so what are your requirements for prizes if any? Also does any one recommend a company for digitizing the local newspaper to be able to search from their website. We had Graphic Sciences (ScanItToday) do our newspapers in 2010, but they no longer do that service. We have to contact DTSearch for support. Is there another company with better software?
