Digitizing Hidden Special Collections and Archives - Closing November 1, 2023 Digitizing Hidden Special Collections and Archives: Amplifying Unheard Voices is a grant competition administered by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) for digitizing rare and unique content stewarded by collecting organizations in the US and Canada. Launched in 2021, the program is designed to support efforts to digitize materials that deepen public understanding of the histories of people of color and other communities and populations whose work, experiences, and perspectives have been insufficiently recognized or unattended. VRA Project Grant - Closing November 3, 2023 The Visual Resources Association Project Grant awards up to $3,000 to support projects in the field of visual resources and image management. The project must be completed within one year from the time the grant is formally accepted. The funds may be used for stand-alone projects or pilots, start-up financing for larger projects, or for a component of a larger project. Collaborative projects and those proposed by groups, whether or not affiliated with an organization or institution, are encouraged. Executive Director of Library Services - Manistee County Library (MI) The Manistee County Library (MI)<https://www.manisteelibrary.org/> Board of Trustees seeks a thoughtful and engaging leader as its next Executive Director of Library Services. With a $1.5 million budget, 18.5 FTE, and six locations, the library provides over 24,000 residents with essential services and resources through a variety of programming, diverse print and electronic resources, and knowledgeable staff. Library highlights include robust children's programming, a Library of Things collection, and one-on-one technology assistance. In the coming years, the library will be focusing on a renewal of its existing tax millage, an assessment of the organization's facilities, and building lasting relationships with community organizations. Nestled along the shores of Lake Michigan, Manistee County boasts a unique blend of natural beauty and small-town charm that make it a destination for many. The area has a rich history, with Victorian-era architecture adorning the streets of downtown Manistee. The county's arts scene, featuring the historic Ramsdell Theatre, eight museums, and frequent Little River Casino concerts, offers cultural enrichment for all. The area offers hiking, fishing, and water sports across 25 miles of sandy shoreline on Lake Michigan, over 500,000 acres in the Manistee National Forest, multiple inland lakes, 270 miles of rivers, and many four-season fisheries. Responsibilities: Under the general direction of the Manistee County Library Board of Trustees, the Executive Director of Library Services plans and directs the services of the library system to provide for the education, reading entertainment, and information needs of the community. The Executive Director of Library Services, as the only staff member with an MLS, is responsible for building and maintaining library collections; developing policies for Board approval to guide library operations; supervising library staff, training new staff members, assisting in negotiations with the libraries' unionized employees, preparing and administering the budget, and performing other administrative functions. Qualifications: A master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited library school and five years of progressively more responsible experience in library administration with extensive prior supervisory/administrative experience is required. The Library Board, at its discretion, may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience. The ideal candidate will have experience with long-range planning, training new library workers, involvement with a successful millage effort, and be a team leader who will serve as the face of the library. Compensation: The hiring salary range is $60,000 - $75,000 (with placement negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications) and an excellent fringe benefits package. Working from home can be attractive to employees and employers and creating a work environment and culture that is conducive to remote work can also be mutually beneficial. "LEO is excited to partner with the League on this local capacity program and to develop the much-needed MI Funding Hub," said LEO Director Susan Corbin. "Michigan Communities of all sizes will have the opportunity to gain knowledge on how to successfully deploy new grant opportunities that will directly impact on their community's and help their residents thrive." With billions in available funding for local units of government through programs like ARPA, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act there is a significant need for communities to track funding opportunities as they become available. For many communities across Michigan, especially those small and medium-sized, navigating this process and developing projects and programs that meet their current and future needs exceeds their capacity. "Here in Saginaw, we've relied on the League to help us decide how to invest our ARPA funding," said Brenda F. Moore, Saginaw Mayor. "This partnership between with the League and the state will ensure that we can continue to depend on this assistance moving forward. It's great news for Michigan's communities and cities like Saginaw." In 2020, the League launched two programs - "ServeMICity" and "MI Water Navigator" - to help communities plan and secure new recovery and infrastructure funding for projects that address long-standing community needs. Through those technical assistance and training programs they've helped hundreds of communities leverage over $200 million in new state and federal funding. "This new funding from LEO will allow the League to build on our already successful technical assistance programs that are helping communities leverage new federal funding for high impact local programs," Dan Gilmartin, CEO and executive director of the League. "This work will provide local governments with the critical information and tools they need to capitalize on this once in a generation opportunity." Gilmartin explained there are billions of dollars in new federal funding available and Michigan has an opportunity to maximize access to these resources by providing support to communities in understanding, seeking and successfully deploying new grant funds for economic growth, infrastructure and other community projects. Questions About Providing Digital Access for Public School Students

Greetings! Looking for tips and anecdotal advice from public libraries who have worked with public schools to provide access to digital resources for students via Libby, Hoopla, Kanopy, etc. Our public library piloted a program in 2016 that gave middle school students digital only library cards to access Overdrive. I was not here for this program but am being asked about bringing it back with students having access to Libby. We'd love to provide these resources - along with educational outreach - but want to work through potential issues: * We would ask the school to communicate clearly with parents/guardians. This would include providing an opt out option. Wondering if anyone has handouts or communications for a program such as this? These digital collections are not segmented like our physical collections - how to communicate this to parents/guardians? * If several students are opted out, did this greatly impact the goals of the program? * Logistics on handling digital only cards with our other digital resources such as Kanopy and Hoopla: currently these cards would provide access to all our digital resources.
