Soon to be a major motion picture staring Daisy Ridley and Ben Mendelsohn, The Marsh King's Daughter tells the mesmerizing tale of a woman who must risk everything and traverse the treacherous wilderness of the Upper Peninsula to hunt down the dangerous man who shaped her past and threatens to steal her future: her father. Dionne draws heavily on her homesteading adventures in the Upper Peninsula during the 1970s to write her wilderness thrillers. Her body of work also includes The Wicked Sister, a Publisher's Weekly Best Book of 2020. This program is free and open to the public. In the past year, Shannon came into themself publicly as nonbinary, queer, Autistic, and disabled. In 2021, Shannon founded Youthphoria, a project dedicated to celebrating and photographing trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive youth in the Philadelphia area at no cost. They volunteered as a crisis counselor weekly for The Trevor Project for six years and also donate their time as the co-founder and co-host of Rainbow Connections. We will explore the Connected Learning principles of relationships, interests and opportunities and how to apply the theory into practice. Using the concepts of CT as a problem-solving framework, we will take part in an activity that introduces library staff to a project they can use for teen programming. Participate in hands-on, interactive learning and discuss what CL and CT are and how they can be integrated into teen activities. This workshop will help participants scaffold knowledge they may already have about CL and CT and use it to recognize the ways in which CT supports CL. Instructor: Leah Delia Larson is a Youth Development Program Leader for Central Minnesota 4-H. Leah has extensive expertise in various levels of education. She started her career in education in 2001, and has taught everything from middle school ESL and special education in Texas to elementary school in Brooklyn, New York. Most recently, she worked with the Minnesota Department of Education as a LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) Grant Coordinator/School and Teen Services Consultant and has worked in K-12 schools as a library media specialist. Leah is passionate about building partnerships to expand youth programming, culturally relevant curriculum, bilingualism and social and emotional health and well-being. Leah has been a trainer and assisted in development of the YALSA Transforming Teen Services course work since 2019. Space is limited and there will be a waitlist. Strong community support has resulted in a dedicated perpetual millage, a robust Friends organization, and more than 100 adult volunteers. Pre- pandemic, over a 1,000 visitors a day used the library to participate in programs, use our meeting and study rooms, borrow materials, use technology, and connect with others. The library contributes significantly to the high quality of life available in the Plymouth community. Our sense of community is created by beautiful neighborhoods, spacious parks, robust sport, education system, cultural and arts organizations, and dedicated community service organizations. Our vibrant, walkable downtown is full of unique shops, restaurants, entertainment and recreational options, all surrounding Kellogg Park as the centerpiece and host of year-round events. They may also carry out ongoing or special projects to support collection management and programs. Schedules include evening and weekend hours, including Sundays. JOB DUTIES: • Provides all library users with assistance in reference, readers advisory, and information literacy • Technology skills on a variety of information delivery platforms, such as chat, text, email, phone, fax, mobile devices, social media, content management systems, audio, and video • Assist patrons using online library catalog, e-resources such as e-book and streaming platforms and research databases, public access computers, copiers, and print management system • Strong online searching and information evaluation skills • May assist librarians in special projects in collection management or promotion, such as creating displays • Participate in programs and special events as assigned • Attend and participate in staff meetings and committees • Demonstrate respect and support of diversity and inclusion of cultural values, and continually develop cultural awareness and understanding of self and others • Performs other tasks as assigned REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • Combination of education and experience, including Bachelor’s degree or two or more years of related experience/training • One to two years’ experience providing direct customer service • General computer skills such as word processing and Internet searching • Ability to communicate effectively by phone, computer, and in person • Familiarity with library services and resources preferred • Enthusiasm for learning and adapting to new ideas and technologies • Interpersonal and judgmental skills necessary to work effectively with library staff and patrons in a busy environment • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from patrons, managers, and coworkers • Must work effectively with adults, teens, and youth, and be enthusiastic about library services for all ages • Flexibility in scheduling required; this position requires evenings and weekends throughout the year, including Sundays. Hello! One week from today, on Sept 15th, The Brandon Twp Public Library is holding a program about the Insider's Guide to the College Planning Process. This workshop is offered by My College Planning Team and focuses on the financial strategies that families can use to afford college and how the new FAFSA rules will impact them. Families will learn how to compare the net price of college instead of the sticker price and other important college planning techniques.
