Library Director Elizabeth Sensabaugh received many positive comments, and felt they reached quite a few more people with this marketing effort than they would have otherwise. Montgomery County Public Libraries (MD) "Summer Reading Challenge!" Goes Green! Montgomery County Public Libraries' "Summer Reading Challenge!" is going green! This year instead of awarding plastic prizes during their summer reading program, Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) will celebrate children's and teens' reading accomplishments by supporting the conservation efforts of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to save the Bay, which feeds the Atlantic Ocean. Five hundred trees will be planted in the Bay's watershed (where MCPL is located); 250,000 oysters will be planted in the Bay to help clean the waters; and animal habitats will be cleaned up. Mindfulness and Movement Gretchen Andrews, MLIS, RYT, Youth Services Librarian, Hawaii Are you looking for a new theme for your story time program toolbox? Combining yoga with story time is a great way to introduce both mindfulness and movement into your library program. Adding the element of mindful motion is creative and engaging. [https://mcusercontent.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/images/5498a30e-2472-d3…] Being a certified yoga teacher is not necessarily required when introducing yoga into a story time plan. There are a vast array of picture book titles that can be read aloud, and the movement instruction can be taken directly from the text. An excellent example is the book "You Are A Lion! And Other Fun Yoga Poses" by Taeeun Yoo. There are also many books that do not have yoga directly in the title or as a theme. A couple of my favorites that I keep in rotation are "Stretch", by Doreen Cronin and "Bark George", by Jules Feiffer. Both titles have animal poses that correlate with movements such as cat, cow, and dog pose that are a part of the traditional yoga sequences. One of the key benefits for anyone who practices yoga is the breath work and meditation. Teaching children to slow down, stop, and take a deep breath is an indispensable life skill to carry on into adult-hood. "Moody Cow Meditates", by Kerry Lee MacClean is a great example of a children's picture book that couples SEL (Social Emotional Learning) and mindfulness. In today's hectic world these are two great elements to introduce to both young readers and their accompanying adults. This is a full-time paraprofessional position at the Senior Library Assistant/Supervisor level. If you're looking for innovative ways to connect with your community using local history materials and digital collections, consider applying to participate in this IMLS grant-funded program. See call for public library participation below: National Call for Libraries – Summer 2022 We are recruiting 25+ libraries to become hubs for making outdoor games and interactive stories — using your local history, community voices, and neighborhood landmarks. This is a 2022-23 initiative, thanks to an IMLS grant. Why apply today? There is a growing need to engage beyond library walls, including with digital media — as revealed by the COVID pandemic. By joining this program, your library will become a hub for making our own stories and outdoor games. We provide live training and pay for materials, and even run workshops in game design for your patrons over Zoom. Our remarkable approach to “low tech” keeps the focus on telling community stories, from escape rooms with local history and public art, to audio tours that feature resident voices and send archival photos by text message. The tool we will teach you is called Hive Mechanic, and it does not require any programming experience to use; it was made by the Game Center at American University.
