Good Afternoon, Library cooperative directors, please feel free to share this with your member libraries. Karina Boyd at new MAP partner Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso [ https://www.michigansteamtrain.com/ | https://www.michigansteamtrain.com/ ] wanted everyone to know that SRI volunteer staff are ready, willing, and able to present free programs in Michigan public libraries. A list of available programs is included in Karina's email below. Please note that I have neither seen nor vetted any of the programs. How about a holiday season program (or, Holiday in July?) "History of Pere Marquette 1225, and its involvement in "The Polar Express", followed by a showing of the movie itself? The latter of course is dependent on two things: 1. Your library has a public performance license to show movies from either [ https://www.swank.com/movie-licensing-usa | https://www.swank.com/movie-licensing-usa ] (discounted bulk license might be available through your library cooperative; TLN has such an agreement) or [ https://www.mplc.org/ | https://www.mplc.org/ ] and 2. Join us at Commerce Twp. Community Library for a presentation on boat building. Michigan will always be known as the automobile capital of the world, but the Great Lakes State boasts a similarly rich heritage in the development of boat building in America. By the late nineteenth century, Michigan had emerged as the industry’s hub, drawing together the most talented designers, builders, and engine makers to produce some of the fastest and most innovative boats ever created. Within decades, gifted Michigan entrepreneurs like Christopher Columbus Smith, John L. Hacker, and Gar Wood had established some of the nation’s top boat brands and brought the prospect of boat ownership within reach for American consumers from all ranges of income. More than just revolutionizing recreational boating, Michigan boat builders also left their mark on history—from developing the speedy runabouts favored by illicit rum-runners during the Prohibition era to creating the landing craft that carried Allied forces to shores in Europe and the Pacific in WWII. In this presentation, based on his book of the same name, Scott M. Muskegon Area District Library - New Director Announcement

Hi Everyone, We are excited to share that our new Director, Ron Suszek, started at the Muskegon Area District Library on Monday, June 20th! He is not new to Michigan but has been out of the area for the past several years. Please help us welcome him back and congratulate him on his new role. I included the press release info below for more information. New Library Director Selected at Muskegon Area District Library MUSKEGON, MI, May 17, 2022 - The Board of Trustees of the Muskegon Area District Library is pleased to announce the selection of Ron L. Suszek, II as the new MADL Library Director. He will join MADL June 20, 2022. Suszek has extensive experience working in public libraries, including a seventeen-year career in leadership positions. He has managed a wide range of services including public programming, technology, collection development and logistics. Most recently, he served as Library Services Administrator with the San Antonio Public Library, (SAPL) in San Antonio, Texas. At SAPL, he worked to overhaul the digital experience for library users by developing services and collections to meet the needs of a growing and culturally diverse community of nearly two million. He was actively involved in San Antonio's digital inclusion network and worked to provide essential access to support digital literacy efforts in one of the nation's least connected cities. Prior to his five-year service with SAPL, he worked at Grace A. Dow Memorial Library in Midland, Michigan for ten years. The selection of Mr. Suszek concludes a six-month nation-wide search and several Board Special Meetings to interview highly qualified candidates. "Mr. Suszek has extensive experience initiating and sustaining partnerships with community organizations and has been successful in raising stakeholders' awareness of the library, its employees, and services as well as the importance of funding and supporting its mission," says Doug Hughes, Chair, MADL Board of Trustees. "I am excited to be a part of the Muskegon Area District Library, working with the dedicated people at MADL who serve the community in such meaningful and transformative ways," says Suszek. "Muskegon is such a diverse and unique community and the Library has so much potential to impact everyone in the community, helping everyone achieve success together. The amazing work that MADL has been doing to support the community is why I first started working in public libraries nearly twenty years ago." Greetings, The Midwest Collaborative for Library Services and the University of Michigan are partnering again to extend the offer of a free pilot of the “Grant Writing and Crowdfunding for Public Libraries” course on Michigan Online. All staff of all MCLS member public libraries in both Indiana and Michigan are eligible to participate. We are very excited to share that Kristin Fontichiaro, Clinical Professor at the University of Michigan School of Information, is the instructor for this four-week, self-paced course. This course offers 6.5 contact hours for continuing education credit upon successful completion of the course. This course does not count towards university or college credit hours. Good Afternoon Library Community, We have a few things ready for a new life and a new home. 1. A mystical, magical castle that was gifted to us several years ago from Trenton Library. We are re-vamping our children's area and the castle is ready for a new life. It is big. It is heavy. It does come apart in four sections. You will need a big truck and a couple strong people to move it. 2. Four cd/dvd shelves that slide. 3. Four shelves for hanging kits. 4. Numerous, I am going to say at least 12, magazine shelves. These are the type that flip up to store items underneath. Pictures are attached. Important Upcoming Library Catalog Changes [Library of Michigan logo] Special Edition - Special Collections Update - June 21, 2022 Important Upcoming Library Catalog Changes [LM Interior]Pending Library Catalog Changes The Library of Michigan's catalog software will undergo a complete change on June 30th. During the week prior to the change on the 30th, the Library's patron record system, catalog, and circulation system will be unavailable. However, there will be a manual process in place to record checked-out materials. Here is a timeline of what to expect between now and the June 30 go-live: * June 22, 2022 - Patrons cannot submit online library card applications and Library staff must cease processing online card applications. * June 26, 2022 - Patrons will no longer be able to renew items on Answercat<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> and any items checked out between the 26th and the 30th will not be listed under a patron's My Library Record until after the catalog transition. * June 30, 2022 - Go live with the new catalog system. Patrons must reset their card pin numbers in order to access online resources from the Library of Michigan. Instructions for this are forthcoming as we get closer to the date. Once the system goes live on June 30, there will still be several projects to refine the software in order to make sure everything is working properly.
