Willard Library has big news to share: Matt Willis, currently deputy director of operations for Willard Library in Battle Creek, has been selected to be the new director of the library after Catherine Christ Lucas retires June 30. On Tuesday, the library board of trustees unanimously voted to offer the director job to Willis, who has been with the library for 20 years. We hosted author and Holocaust survivor Irene Miller last week at Commerce Township Community Library, and I'm adding my name to the long list of people who recommended her. We had a great turnout and it's still generating buzz in our community this week. She stayed and answered questions after her lecture, she took pictures with patrons when requested, and she gladly signed copies of her book. Her story is incredibly inspiring, and would be a unique experience to share with any community willing to host her. These are just a few of the interactive, multimodal, play-based spaces that the youngest patrons of the Calgary Public Library can enjoy. So much more than quiet repositories for books, the library's children's departments have been reimagined and rebuilt as innovative Early Learning Centres. In Bay City*, Mich., likewise, young visitors to the library will see a stately, historical, Victorian Gothic façade from the outside but can experience forward-thinking, innovative learning spaces on the inside. The library was built in 1884, yet its approach to early childhood education is decidedly 21st-century. As the Calgary Public Library's "Early Learning Strategy" puts it, "Children and their caregivers must be supported early on, well before kids begin school. Public libraries are uniquely positioned to support engagement in early learning because we are accessible and free." The Calgary Public Library and the Bay County Library System have something else in common. They've both adopted LENA Start as part of their mission to elevate early learning. During the program, LENA's "talk pedometer" technology measures key components of children's language environments, and parents attend weekly sessions to learn strategies for increasing interactive talk in the home. The MCLS Nominating Committee seeks nominations from the membership for the following openings on the MCLS Board of Directors: - At-Large Representative (Indiana) - Public Library Representative (Indiana) - Academic Library Representative (Michigan) - Special Library Representative (Michigan) Please note that the incumbent Board Representative in the Michigan Academic Library position is eligible to run for another three-year term. Each seat has a three-year term, beginning Jan. 1, 2023, and expiring Dec. 31, 2025. The Board meets in person four times a year, in February, May, August, and November, and Board meetings alternate between Michigan and Indiana. The November meeting includes a two-day strategy retreat to review activity of the previous year, assess trends, and determine strategic changes to MCLS’s services. Newly elected Board members are asked to attend the annual retreat. MCLS reimburses Board members for all direct meeting expenses. The MCLS Board utilizes the Policy Governance Model developed by John and Miriam Carver. To learn more about Policy Governance, visit their website <http://www.carvergovernance.com/>. New Board members will receive an orientation to Policy Governance prior to the Board retreat. MCLS’s members are also its owners. The Board represents your interests as owners.
