I am very pleased to share with you an IMLS Grant Funded project "The Libraries and Veterans National Forum Toolkit." The Libraries and Veterans National Forum was born out of efforts from librarians at the Texas A&M University Libraries and their desire to better learn from other libraries' efforts to support the veteran and military communities. Collaborating with librarians from academic, public, school, state, and VA libraries, the Libraries and Veterans National Forum project team gathered 250 librarians engaging in this work to share their success stories, brainstorm solutions to their challenges, and gain new ideas to bring back to their libraries. The online Forum took place during the Fall of 2021, and recordings of the Forum sessions will be made available on this site Librarians across the U.S. also had the opportunity to apply for microgrants that could seed veterans' programming at their local libraries. To help librarians just getting started working with veterans, as well as those looking for new ideas to bring to their libraries, an online toolkit was created to collect the shared knowledge of librarians working with the veteran community. It contains lesson plans, program outlines, collection development policies, best practice documents, and more to help ease the way for those just getting started in this work - and to make it easier for those already engaged to find new ideas and new strategies to increase the success of their programs. Door counters

Follow-Up MI Library Advocacy Day: School Library Breakout Session

Thank you to MLA, MAME, and Mi-ALA for an excellent Michigan Library Advocacy Day yesterday! Thank you to those who attended the information session on school libraries! I promised to send some follow-up information based on questions during the session. I did not have a list of attendees -- so, I hope you don't mind that I am sending this to the listserv. The information provided may be useful for all. Thank you so much to the Michigan Library Community for their support for strong school libraries in our state! Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional information. --Kathy Lester FOLLOW-UP FROM MI LIBRARY ADVOCACY DAY - SCHOOL LIBRARIES Here is some follow-up from yesterday’s School Library Information Breakout during today’s Michigan’s School Library Event. Attendees asked for links to the slides and information shared. They also asked about data showing the impact of school librarians. I included several documents with links to specific studies. Also, I had mentioned that there has been *more money* coming to Michigan Schools. Thus, school districts can prioritize properly staffing and support for their students through their school libraries. I’ve included information about staffing guidelines. I’ve also included the newsletter items from the Michigan School Board, Superintendents, and Secondary Principal Associations recommending to districts that now is the time to be investing in school libraries. I’ve included a link to the statement from the Governor’s Educator Advisory Council which was mentioned during the breakout session. Finally, I’ve included information about recommendations from the School Finance Research Collaborative (SFRC) about school funding including a recommendation for 1 library media specialist (certified school librarian) per school. MAME’s hope is that public librarians will support the library ecosystem by supporting the AASL definition <https://www.ala.org/aasl/sites/ala.org.aasl/files/content/advocacy/statemen…> of an effective school library with a certified school librarian at each school. Michigan students deserve the equity of access and experience provided by an effective school library staffed by a certified school librarian within their school. We can do better than being 47th in the nation in supporting our students through effective school libraries. Not only was the fate of reading scores tied to that of school library staffing, but the relationship remained when change in overall school staffing was taken into account. The Baltimore Library Project which was supported by the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation made sure that a certified school librarian was in place at any renovated school library and funding was included for professional development of the librarians. The study recommended a 'weighted formula' - ie more money based on needs such as high poverty, special education & EL students. The school aid budget from this school year and the recommended budget for next school year has been trying to move toward this model. There is the example of the Plymouth Canton Community School District – they have a full-time certified school librarian in each school; yet have always received the minimum per-student funding from the state. How much/What percentage of the budget do Class 3 libraries spend on the collection?

Our budget and our township's budget are both due by the end of the month. We are under extra scrutiny this year, as the township wants to reduce our appropriation. We are pushing for an increase to support better funded collections and programming and long-overdue increases in exceedingly low staff wages. We have data to back up wages. I'm wondering how our spending on the collection compares to other public libraries our size. Currently, 6.5% of our FY2022-23 budget or $16,000 is going for books ($9,500 on adults, $2,500 children, $2,000 tweens, $2,000 teens). AV is about 1% or $2,400 for the year. We spend a little on video games and "things" for our Library of Things, but most it of course is books & AV. How does this compare with your library? Highlights are below. We recommend reading the documentation thoroughly before applying as there are significant changes from the previous years. The Improving Access to Information grant program will also be available in 2022. Information will be posted on that program in March. Public Library Services 2022 Grant program This program provides funding for public libraries to purchase materials and supplies that meet the selected program topics for a given year and are for an identified program or service the library will provide. The intent is to supplement local topical programs that improve information access and quality of service in their communities. The expected focus will be on small projects that improve community services in one of the three priorities listed below and that align with the LSTA priorities listed in the grant documentation. * Literacy programs * Children and Teen programs * Technology programs Grant Details: * Applications are due Monday, March 7th by 5:00 PM EST. * Branch locations remain eligible for grants, however, this year ALL branch applications must be submitted and managed by the main or administrative branch. * A UEI (Unique Entity Identifier) number from SAM.gov is REQUIRED on the application. * Funding will be from $500 to $2,000 per location. * Funding is by reimbursement only. * Eligible applicants are Michigan public libraries that are legally established and currently eligible for state aid. * The grant period is from mid-April to September, with expenditures complete by August. An application webinar will be held Monday, February 14th at 10:00 AM. Registration is on the Public Library Services grants page. The grant program is lightly competitive. Reflection Rooms

Trying to gauge how many public libraries in Michigan offer reflection/meditation rooms for the public? A reflection room gives people the opportunity to practice their religion and/or relax for a couple of minutes in a clean area with little to no disturbances. Giving us one large room on the third floor will be fantastic for the community and the amazingly hard-working students who have great aspirations and require an area to practice their religion and clear their minds for a couple of minutes.
