However, there is an entirely different class of book bans that are political, politicized, and performative which must be understood in order to be properly engaged. For public libraries, these challenges are used to attack the library's funding, its staff, or even its existence. In school libraries, these performative and politicized challenges seem to attack or negate the students the books represent. In order to face these unusual types of challenges, library leaders in both public and school settings need to see that these challenges are more expansive than previous intellectual freedom fights - and need to be prepared to engage them on multiple fronts at once. Irene Miller, Holocaust survivor and author

Hello! Author and Holocaust survivor, Irene Miller has spoken at Oakland Community College (OCC) both in person and via Zoom. She is an inspiring and engaging speaker. Irene is speaking again at OCC via Zoom on Wednesday March 23, 2022 from noon - 1pm. They attempt to escape Poland but end up in the frozen landscape called "No Man's Land." We travel with her (and her parents and sister) as the young Irene survives a Siberian labor camp, faces starvation in Uzbekistan, and ultimately lives in orphanages. It's a powerful and compelling story of struggle and loss but ultimately survival and courage. Despite all her hardships, Irene has a positive and loving spirit that will not be dampened. I believe all in attendance at Irene Miller's speeches are better for having heard her story. Irene's memoir, "Into No Man's Land," is as moving and poignant as her speeches. The Library of Michigan, in collaboration with the University of Michigan School of Information, has launched a brief survey to better ascertain the current resources and future needs related to digitization across the state. The findings of the survey will be used to make recommendations for services and programming to support digital access to and preservation of Michigan's cultural record. This survey is voluntary, anonymous, and takes approximately five minutes to complete.
