I hope you will help spread the word about this newly created position... The Galesburg Charleston Memorial District Library is accepting applications for an Outreach & Programming Library Assistant. Primary responsibilities for this new position include developing and promoting library programs, acting as liaison with the community both in-person and via social media, and assisting patrons with normal, day-to-day library services. This part-time position includes days, evenings, and Saturdays, up to 30 hours per week. Pay is commensurate with experience, starting at $13.00 - $14.00 per hour. The ideal candidate will be dynamic, positive, friendly and team oriented. Must be passionate about providing exceptional customer service and be able to work with interruptions. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education plus demonstrated programming and customer service experience required. Knowledge of library principles and practices or library experience preferred. Oral Histories

Hello, I am looking for some expertise related to the use of oral history tapes and transcriptions in our library. A number of oral histories were recorded in the 1970s by the library. The cassettes contain interviews with local African American community members who had knowledge of and/or family history tied to our county's active Underground Railroad. Formal consent was not obtained during the making of these tapes. In the time since the tapes were made, a published index of participant names was made available to researchers. While I am not certain, I do believe researchers have been given access to these tapes as well. There is a renewed interest in this collection and the library has received requests for access to the tapes. It is my understanding that without signed consent forms, the library does not have copyright to these historical records. I would appreciate the opportunity to better understand what, if any, options we may have for making these invaluable resources available. HB 4530-4533 eliminates the May and August elections and replaces them with a June election. House Bills 4530-4533 would amend different acts to remove the May regular election date and move the date of the primary election in Michigan from August to June, limiting a jurisdiction to holding only two elections in a year. Libraries rely on locally dedicated millages for funding. A millage loss could very well close the doors permanently for a library, so alternative dates to re-present their proposal to their community during the calendar year are essential. Additional restrictions to the number of times each year that a millage can be brought before voters are detrimental to libraries. HBs 4530 - 4533 would move that election date to the Tuesday after the first Monday in June. They would also eliminate the May regular election. Legislators need to hear from us about why it is important to keep three election dates to allow libraries more flexibility in seeking millages.
