Safeguarding mental health is just as important, and spending time outdoors – whether in your backyard, on your balcony or in big, open spaces – can boost mind, body and spirit. Beginning Workshop FAQ

Greetings! We have been receiving many inquiries regarding the cancellation of Beginning Workshop. Below you will find answer to the most common questions. REGISTRATIONS I am an attendee. Do I need to cancel my workshop attendee registration? * No. All attendee registrations have been automatically cancelled by LM. There is nothing you need to do regarding your individual attendee conference registration. I am a speaker. Do I need to do anything additional? * No. All speaker registrations will be automatically cancelled by LM. There is nothing you need to do regarding your individual speaker conference registration. LODGING I am an attendee. Do I need to cancel my hotel room at Shanty Creek Resorts (SCR)? * MAYBE. * Anyone that mailed in a check may call to cancel, and a refund will be sent to them via mail. Be patient please, it has to go through accounting and will take a while. * Reservations staff, and all staff at SCR are on lower hours of operation. Please leave a message and you will be contacted. * Any attendees that are planning to attend the workshop in 2021 do not need to do anything. Your reservation will remain valid for the 2021 event. You are welcome to cancel if you prefer. * Any rooms that were booked beyond the Group Room Block, for personal use, will need to be rebooked through Reservation if the attendees still plan to visit Shanty Creek in May of 2020. * You can reach Shanty Creek Resort at (866) 486-7790. What should I do? * If your library needs staff attendance at the now canceled 2020 Beginning Workshop in order for your library to receive State Aid in fiscal year 2021, please review the State Aid to Public Libraries Application Process<https://www.michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/State_Aid_to_Public_Li…> for information on submitting a waiver request. We will also be contacting libraries that find themselves in this situation and are happy to answer any questions on the certification and State Aid process. The 2021 Beginning Workshop has already been scheduled May 12-14, 2021 at the Shanty Creek Resort and Spa. Please mark your calendars. Will waivers related to a library staff member being unable to obtain certification in 2020 because of the event cancellation be processed automatically? * A library will need to submit the waiver to LM. If this is the reason a waiver is needed a waiver will be granted for the year. Greetings! Below you will find responses to the most frequently asked questions regarding the Loleta Fyan Small and Rural Libraries conference. REGISTRATIONS I am an attendee. MeL Minute: This week brought to you by a homeschooler

[A close up of a sign Description automatically generated]In this week's MeL Minute, a Michigan home schooler talks about the information, accessibility, and enjoyment of eBooks available through MeL's eBook Collections.<https://mel.org/az.php?a=e> LM received this MM through Kate Van Auken, director of the White Pine Library Cooperative. It could not be more perfect for right now. RESEARCH: As a high school senior, many of my eBook needs are research based. There are so many great resources available through MeL but my go-to is using the eBook collections found online, particularly the eBook Academic Collection. This collection is made up of over 172,000 titles covering every subject imaginable. This collection is not age specific so titles can include children through adult. I find this very helpful when researching a topic I am interested in teaching, I can locate age appropriate titles within a subject, all in one place. They even have a citation icon on many of their sources to help with bibliographies! ACCESSIBILITY: For me personally, accessibility comes down to physically getting to the public library, something that can be hard to do in rural areas without a driver's license. MeL's eBook collections make it possible to access titles without ever leaving your home. Titles are available instantly as PDF files and as downloads you can use on your laptop computer or mobile devices. The wonderful part about MeL's ebook collections is that they take equal access for all very seriously. Users who are visually impaired, non-English speakers, users who are hearing impaired, physically or learning impaired can access titles in formats they can use. ENJOYMENT: MeL's eBook collections are not only for research and fact finding. The eBook High School Collection<http://web.a.ebscohost.com/ehost/search/basic?sid=514071d1-7893-4111-809c-d…> includes over 9,800 titles including both fiction and nonfiction. These titles are always available for instant gratification, no waiting for titles to be returned! Many titles also offer links to more books and videos about the topic you want to read about. RBdigital Services: Go Live Now With 13 Month (April 1, 2020 Through April 30, 2021) Pricing

Good Afternoon, Just a quick update to the below. With libraries closed through March 30, 2020 I have been getting many calls and emails concerning provision of digital product for remote use by patrons. That's great. One easy way to do this is the addition of magazines, audiobooks, comics, newspapers and streaming video from RBdigital. Although the "official" contract period for this TLN contracted service is May 1, 2020 through April 30, 2021 the majority of my referenced calls and emails this morning have concerned requests for an early start to the service(s), as in asap. To that end we can and do offer 13 month pricing, April 1, 2020 through April 30, 2021, but with an actual go live sometime before April 1, 2020. Many libraries have taken part in the webinar with Mark Haley. There has been a very good response from libraries to this offer, from all across the state. As that is the case, we are extending the discounted price terms until March 31 , 2020. Please note we can and do accommodate pro-rated start dates. In other words, if your new fiscal year is July 1 and you wish to time your start of the new service in order to coincide with that, all you need do is commit to the new service by March 31 , 2020 . Regardless of start date, all four of the subscription based products covered by this offer (Magazines, Audiobooks, Comics, Newspapers) will have a common expiration date of April 30 , 2021. Finally, a number of libraries have asked for an explanation as to how pricing works for the fifth service, Streaming Video, that is covered by this offer. Under the terms of our agreement with Recorded Books the annual platform fee for Streaming Video, which ranges from $250.00 for a Class 1 library to $5,000.00 for the highest circulation Class VI libraries, that annual platform fee is waived. Between the ---'s is an explanation from Mark Haley as to the pricing model used for Streaming Video: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The RBdigital Unlimited Streaming Video service is based on a 7-Day Unlimited Use Access Pass. A patron that checks out a 7-Day Unlimited Pass costs the library $2.99. The patron can for seven days watch Unlimited Videos from the channel they have selected. The Patrons can watch 2 or 2000 video episodes, the cost to the library is $2.99 per channel per patron. On the 8 day, the patron would need to checkout another 7-Day Unlimited Access Pass. This pass can be checked out any day of the week, and the 7 Day Access starts on the moment they checkout the Pass. It is NOT a calendar week, it’s a 7 Day Pass and can be checked out anytime. For Example: Jane P. Doe checks out an AcornTV channel 7-Day Access Pass on Monday evening at 7 PM,. She now has Unlimited Access to AcornTV until Monday at 7 PM of the next week. Jane can watch completely unlimited AcornTV for these 7 Days. Any show, any episode, all day every day. The library pays $2.99. If Jane also wants to watch THE GREAT COURSES channel. The library would be charged $2.99 when she checks out a 7 Day Access Pass for that channel. If she checks out this pass at 6 AM on Saturday morning, then she would have access until 6 AM the next Saturday . She could then checkout a fresh pass. We can place limits on the Passes! Although, I don’t have a single library that has adopted limits, they are available. Annual Limits, Monthly Limits. Covid19 resources for Michigan Public Libraries

Greetings! With so much information changing how libraries operate during the pandemic, we thought it would be helpful to provide a simple guide to the various directives. Because situations are so fluid, we can't guarantee the list is exhaustive, but we will continue to provide additional information as we receive it. (Please copy and paste the URL into your browser if you are having trouble with any links below.) Resources and Information: Executive Order (EO) 2020-9 (Limiting access to places of Public Accommodation). This EO requires restaurants, bars, and other places of amusement and food service, including public libraries, to close to the public. https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-521789--,00.html Application of this executive Order to public libraries for purposes of delivery or pick up ("curbside") services is unclear. The Library of Michigan urges and library offering or contemplating the offering of "curbside" or similar service to members of the public to consult their local County Public Health Departments, or their local Emergency Management officials, if applicable. Staff at LM has heard from libraries that county health departments are giving different answers to this question. At this time we have no other information from the Governor's office.
