2021 Money Smart Kids Read!

As with many things this year, Michigan's 2021 financial literacy campaign is evolving to meet the needs of a COVID-19 world. We're busy at work to formalize our Michigan Financial Wellness Network for year-round collaboration, and non-solicitous financial literacy programming through our Money Smart Michigan initiative, which will culminate during Money Smart Michigan Month -- all of April! It is likely that programming will be virtual this spring, and we're moving forward with monthly planning meetings -- AND our beloved Money Smart Kids Read program! (Yes, FREE BOOKS FOR KIDS!) Thanks to our generous underwriting partner, Michigan Credit Unions, we are once again providing free copies of this year's book to libraries across Michigan for use in money-themed story time events during the month of April, 2021. These events will probably look a little different this year; they might zoom, or be live on facebook, or part of a grab-and-go project, but we can't wait to see how you use this wonderful resource! As a board member in Lincoln Park I can tell you we are not paid. It strictly a volunteer job and the current members (5) have been stable quite stable since becoming a city library in 2014. However there was a period when we had 1 or 2 vacancies for a time.

Perhaps one of Dan Gutman's books. We think of him as a sports story writer, but he has written some historical books. One series is called Flashback Four where a photographer and 4 kids go back in time to take pictures of historic events. Another is the QWERTY Stevens short series, two or 3 books that take the reader back in time with historic people. The Roseville Public Library is a class V library with a service population of approximately 49,000. The Library was re-established as an Act 164 of 1877 Library in 2012 and is an integral part of the dynamic City of Roseville, located in Macomb County. The library, a member of the Suburban Library Cooperative assists over 70,000 visitors each year with a collection of 100,000 items and a budget of $1,600,000. The archives contain documents, photographs, electronic records and artifacts highlighting the colorful history of Roseville. POSITION: Part-Time Adult Services Librarian and Archivist REPORTS TO: Adult Services Coordinator SALARY: $23.75 - $24.75 per hour, no benefits HOURS: 28 hours per week including evenings and Saturdays. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Knowledge of current library theories and practices. * Knowledge of current archival theories and practices. * Researches and answers reference questions, primarily but not exclusively at the adult reference desk and in the archives. * Knowledge of popular reading trends in adults to provide reader’s advisory. * Assists patrons with technology questions and downloading digital content. * Creates, plans, implements and promotes innovative adult programs and programs promoting the archives. * Actively goes into the community to solicit donations of archival materials. * Provides creative social media content to promote the adult services area and the archives. * Develops materials to promote the successful use of the archives. * Adds content to the local history database. * Assists with grant writing and other fund-raising efforts. * Participates in staff meetings, workshops, conferences and community events. * Participates in state and local professional organizations and keeps informed about current developments and trends in public library services. * Receives requests and concerns from patrons. Resolves issues or informs a supervisor. * Interprets and follows library policies and procedures. * Maintains a welcoming environment for all. * Performs related duties and general library work as required. REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS * Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university with an archival certificate. Applicants must submit proof of degree with application and official transcript at time of interview. Must be able to present a Librarian’s Permanent Professional Certificate from the Library of Michigan. * Experience working or volunteering in an archives. * Dependable work habits including punctuality, reliability and flexibility. * Enthusiasm for public service and a commitment to public service excellence. * Ability to use library- and archival-related technology, Microsoft Office Suite, social media and mobile devices and instruct patrons of all ages in their use. Ability to create short films for social media is a plus. * Be able to communicate effectively with co-workers, patrons and other organizations. * Work as a team to provide exceptional service and innovative programs. * Embrace change in work environment, procedures and services. * Good organizational skills; ability to prioritize duties and tasks, work independently and assume responsibility. * Delivers consistently friendly, attentive, welcoming, high quality customer service to patrons of all ages * Must possess a valid Michigan Driver’s License with a good driving record (based on City of Roseville standards). * As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass a background check and pre-employment physical. * The job requires moderate physical exertion such as sitting or standing in one position, viewing a computer screen for long periods and using hands and fingers in activities requiring good coordination and dexterity. The job also requires the physical strength and dexterity to handle up to 50 pounds in weight, transport loaded carts and bend and lift arms overhead. Library of Michigan Continuing Education Stipends

As we move into the new year with events being virtual, please keep in mind that the Library of Michigan Continuing Education stipends can be used for virtual events. For virtual conferences or workshops, LM will reimburse the actual cost of registration for accepted applicants up to $500. With this funding opportunity consider attending an event virtually if you can. During these hectic times, it can help to learn from our colleagues about how they are handling the issues and needs of their communities. Finally, to allow for more flexibility for library staff, LM is temporarily reviewing applications monthly rather than quarterly. We will review applications from the previous month the first week of the next month. Applications must be for events that are AFTER the review date (last day of the month). Our machine is no longer serviceable and parts/cleaning cartridges are not available. We are looking for a machine similar to the one we have. One that would be able to run batches of discs. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Jean Bolley, a Capital Area District Libraries Superstar, is retiring

Hi everyone, Join me in congratulating CADL's Head Librarian at our Foster Branch, Jean Bolley on her retirement. Jean is and has been a truly exceptional librarian for our system. She's been with CADL since we formed in 1998 and before that, she worked for the Lansing Public Library beginning in 1973. Throughout all her years, she had a passion and talent for storytelling and storytimes. This stems not only from her experience as a librarian, but also from the fact that she has a master's degree in Education with an emphasis on storytelling. She built up our Foster Branch as the area leader for building early literacy skills for local families. There have been so many children in our area who started their literacy journey by attending Jean's storytimes. Along with all of Jean's fantastic work, she's also created a "farm team" of future librarians at Foster. We've had four staff members who've started as pages or library assistants and then moved on to get their degrees and into professional positions. We can't thank Jean enough for all that she's given to the Eastside of Lansing and to our entire area.
