The Suburban Library Cooperative has an exciting new opportunity for a local MLIS student! We have an internship that will provide you with a variety of experiences in five different public libraries (Fraser, Mount Clemens, Roseville, Troy and Warren) and at the Suburban Library Cooperative in Sterling Heights from September 2019 - August 2020. The selected intern will get experience in administration, programming, reference, archives, outreach, automation systems, and more. Details are below: Suburban Library Cooperative Intern $15.00/hr. General: The Suburban Library Cooperative is seeking a student who is currently enrolled in a Library Science Master’s Degree program at an accredited college or university for a paid, part-time internship. The Intern will complete service rotations at designated SLC libraries, as well as at the Suburban Library Cooperative. The intern will learn to provide reference service/bibliographic instruction to adults, teens and children; assist patrons with library technology and mobile devices individually and in a classroom setting; assist with programming and collection development; and learn other aspects of Library operations, including Circulation, Technical Services, Community Engagement, Marketing, and Library Administration. This unique opportunity will allow the student to gain practical library knowledge and skills, while working alongside professional librarians and staff, in a variety of library settings. This position has a term length of 1 year, working 15 - 20 hours per week (including evening and weekend hours). Applicants should be enthusiastic about public service, exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills and have a working knowledge of library technology, preferably SIRSI and/or Polaris. 10/29/2020 ALA Statement on Executive Order on Combating Race and Sex Stereotyping CHICAGO - On September 22, the White House issued its Executive Order On Combating Race And Sex Stereotyping<https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/executive-order-combating-r…>, prohibiting federal employees, contractors, and grant recipients from discussing or considering concepts such as critical race theory and white privilege and discouraging diversity education and training. This order is based on the patently false and malicious claim that diversity training—which is aimed at fostering a more equitable and just workplace and dismantling systemic racism and sexism—reflects a "Marxist doctrine" that is itself racist and sexist. The American Library Association rejects this claim. We are painfully aware that libraries and the profession of librarianship have been—and still are—complicit in systems that oppress, exclude, and harm Black people, indigenous people, and people of color, and deny equal opportunity to women. We assert that a commitment to learn from the painful and brutal legacies of our history is essential to the fulfillment of our promise as a country of equal rights and opportunities. This executive order is already having a chilling effect, with some colleges and universities suspending all diversity trainings and canceling cultural celebrations for fear of losing federal funds. A hotline has been established to encourage informants to report those whose words and deeds do not comply with the order or the dictates of its accompanying memoranda<https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/M-20-34.pdf>. We are reminded of another time and another era when the Council of the American Library Association adopted the Freedom to Read<http://www.ala.org/advocacy/intfreedom/freedomreadstatement> statement in response to growing concerns about censorship in the McCarthy era. That statement reads in part: Totalitarian systems attempt to maintain themselves in power by the ruthless suppression of any concept that challenges the established orthodoxy. The power of a democratic system to adapt to change is vastly strengthened by the freedom of its citizens to choose widely from among conflicting opinions offered freely to them. To stifle every nonconformist idea at birth would mark the end of the democratic process. It is the longstanding role of libraries to foster intellectual freedom by ensuring access to the widest diversity of views and expressions, including those that are unorthodox, unpopular, or considered dangerous by those in power. The pursuit of social justice and equity, diversity, and inclusion is equally a core value of the American Library Association. *JOIN US!* *Monday, November 2, at noon is our second informational webinar about the 2021 **Next Level Leadership in Small and Rural Libraries project, an in-depth, long-term exploration.* (Zoom link here <https://libacad.sites.uofmhosting.net/apply-for-2021/>)The program has four components: - Participation in twice-monthly professional development sessions from December 2020 - November 2021 - A monthly informal chat with colleagues to talk shop - A $1000 stipend to carry out a project designed for community impact - A face-to-face conference (fingers crossed!) in November 2021 designed and led by participants We know that we're all living in weird times, and you may think you can't stretch yourself further ... but consider that being part of a *group *could actually give you a network of colleagues and a deeper well of strategies to make this possible. Everything is online except for the November 2021 conference. A laptop and access to Google Drive are required. Participant expenses -- including acquisition of a laptop if you do not have one -- are covered with a $1000 professional growth stipend. Space is limited to 20 participants from Class I-III libraries who will be selected by application based on their application, geographical diversity, balance of class sizes, and variety of past experiences.
