Hey Kaitlin, I really love using Canva. I have an account that I use for personal purposes, but on occasion I've used it for work, too, and it is super easy to use. Projects that I've used it for include work flyers, social media posts, creating a calendar, and I've recently used it to make Storytime designs. An Evening with Author Barbara J. Barton, "Manoomin: The Story of Wild Rice in Michigan" Thursday, May 16 at 6:30 pm at the Pickford Community Library We are honored to announce that the Pickford Community Library is hosting author Barbara J. Barton as part of the Library of Michigan 2019 Michigan Notable Book Tour. "Manoomin: The Story of Wild Rice in Michigan focuses on the history, culture, biology, and economics surrounding the wild rice plant. The story travels through time from the days before European expansion and winds its way forward in and out of the logging and industrialization eras. It weaves between the worlds of the Anishinaabek and Euro-American immigrants. Barton discusses rice beds that once existed in Michigan, why many disappeared, and the efforts to restore and protect the plant." [excerpt from Library of Michigan Press release] Barbara J. Barton is an endangered species biologist; member of the State of Michigan's wild rice working group, Michigan Water Environment Association, and western Upper Peninsula's wild rice team; and academic affiliate of the University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science and the Arts Biological Station, where she collaborates on the state's wild rice map. She was awarded the 2009 MSU Extension Diversity Award for her work with the Michigan tribes on Manoomin. Her book was also awarded the Historical Society of Michigan State History Award in 2018. Job Opening: HathiTrust Enterprise Architect at University of Michigan

HathiTrust is a global partnership of 150+ major research institutions and libraries based at the University of Michigan working towards its mission to ensure that the cultural record is preserved and accessible long into the future. Reporting to the Executive Director, and working out of HathiTrust’s offices at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the Enterprise Architect will provide leadership for planning, developing, and maintaining HathiTrust’s current and future technology infrastructure, which supports a portfolio of activities that include collection aggregation and management, long term preservation, discovery and access, rights management, and computational research. The Enterprise Architect will work as a key partner with the Director of Services and Operations and other HathiTrust staff and technical teams to develop and articulate a coherent strategic vision for HathiTrust’s long-term technical direction, and lead that vision’s execution. The Enterprise Architect will lead the effort to assess needs, plan our technology roadmap, and implement it. Upper Peninsula History Award nominations due April 26! We are currently accepting nominations for our Upper Peninsula History Awards. Every year, the Historical Society of Michigan presents two awards to those who actively preserve and promote the history of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. These awards include the Charles Follo Award for individuals and the Superior Award for historical organizations. Those interested in nominating themselves or others must submit applications so that they arrive at the HSM offices on or before Friday, April 26, 2019, at 5 p.m. (Nominations received after that date and time will not be accepted, regardless of postmark.) Examples of this may include helping successfully preserve a historic site, volunteering at a historical society or museum for a long period of time, or extensively researching a community's history. The Superior Award, established in 2006, honors historical societies, museums, and other historical organizations for advancing the understanding and appreciation of history in their communities. Individuals and organizations are able to self-nominate, but we also encourage community members to nominate candidates they believe are deserving of either award. We accept re-nominations as well. We've all seen some iteration of "Makerspace 101" at a conference somewhere, but where do you go from there? Device purchasing window opens tomorrow

The 2019 Device Purchasing Purchase Window opens tomorrow morning around 9 AM and will remain open until 11:59 PM on September 30, 2019. All purchases must be made through SPOT, and SPOT has been updated and simplified this year! Frequently Asked Questions about the bid and SPOT and a document with all of the awarded devices and related options can be found in the Help section on the REMC SAVE website<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhelp.remc…>. I've also attached an Excel version of the document for those who like to sort and filter. Please forward this info to your colleagues and local districts. Public libraries are also eligible to purchase off of this bid. Several of the vendors are also offering the opportunity to purchase the awarded devices for personal use. Digital illustrator options

Hello all! I am looking for software recommendations for digital illustration software that is VERY beginner friendly. I am looking to use this software to add a little umph to my story time crafts, displays, and puppets. Currently, I just use auto shapes in the various Microsoft office applications to try and make what ever shapes and figures I may need, but this is quite restricting. Adobe and Gimp are a bit too advanced for me, so I am looking for a nice intro to graphic illustration that is somewhere between the two extremes.
