Don't forget to make your nominations for the Upper Peninsula History Awards! We are currently accepting nominations for our Upper Peninsula History Awards. Every year, the Historical Society of Michigan presents two awards to those who actively preserve and promote the history of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. These awards include the Charles Follo Award for individuals and the Superior Award for historical organizations. Examples of this may include helping successfully preserve a historic site, volunteering at a historical society or museum for a long period of time, or extensively researching a community's history. The Superior Award, established in 2006, honors historical societies, museums, and other historical organizations for advancing the understanding and appreciation of history in their communities. Individuals and organizations are able to self-nominate, but we also encourage community members to nominate candidates they believe are deserving of either award. We accept re-nominations as well. Film with a Michigan focus

The following film has a strong Michigan focus because the subject is the Ojibway community in northern Michigan. Vdrome is an international organization that makes experimental and non-traditional films available so that it's great to learn that it picked one about a group in our state. Senior Informationist/Medical Library Team Leader The Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine Library has a terrific opportunity open for a Senior Informationist position. As a newer medical school and, consequently, an all-digital medical library, we are part of many innovative research projects, co-author scholarship, and instructors in the medical education, informatics, and biomedical sciences programs. The library's operation is small, yet mighty, and we have daily access to senior leadership, faculty, residents and staff, and a front-row view of how a medical school works. We are co-instructors for the evidence-based longitudinal medicine track and teach in all four years of the medical education program. Our medical student approval rating on the Independent Student Survey is 100%, and we're known for being the most helpful and nicest employees in the medical school. Overview Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is seeking a Senior Informationist/Medical Librarian Team Leader. The team leader is responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of the digital library and to provide library services to support teaching and learning, research productivity and patient care. Coordinates and administers the formal educational efforts of the library, including developing instructional materials, research guides, web tutorial and support services to guide WMed stakeholders through the world's recorded knowledge. Provides instruction and consultation in bibliographic research methods, health literacy and ethical scholarship including avoidance of plagiarism and respect for copyright. The team leader will represent the library in the Chair's absence. Responsibilities * Support and assist Chair in managing the day-to-day operations of the digital library. Provide general supervision and support to library staff and community faculty librarians to ensure departmental goals and objectives are attained. * Co-teaches orientation sessions, course-integrated instruction, electives, and workshops in undergraduate and graduate medical education. * Instructs on effective searching and evaluation of results for biomedical databases, evidence-based clinical resources, and point-of-care tools. * Provides consultation on how to use and retrieve literature and effectively manage citations with bibliographic management tools. * Delivers library instruction using technology tools including course management system, mobile and tablet devices, screen casting and web conferencing. * Responsible for outreach and marketing activities to promote awareness of the Library's resources and services. * Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of services, policies and procedures. * Evaluates information resources and integrates new technologies in delivery of health information services. * Supplies, organizes, and manages content on the Library's web page and medical school media channels. * Participates on medical school committees to support teaching, research, and clinical care activities. * Ability to work occasional rotations for evening and weekend hours as scheduled. * Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects. * Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions. * All other duties as assigned. Qualifications * Master's degree required, preferably from a library or information sciences program accredited by the American Library Association. * A bachelor's degree in the life or health sciences preferred. * Five (5) years of professional-level academic and/or health sciences experience with a strong service orientation. * Supervisory experience preferred. * Familiarity with medical vocabulary preferred. * Academy of Health Information Professionals credential preferred. * Ability to deliver expert literature search services for systematic reviews and other research projects. * Strong administrative, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills that encourage teamwork. * Experience in the area of foundational evidence-based practice ethology and skills. About Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine As one of the newer US medical schools, WMed is an exciting environment to pursue an academic career. This LSTA grant program is designed to provide public and academic libraries with the opportunity to expand services for learning and access to information and/or to develop library services that provide all users access to information. The intent is to fund one-year projects that increase capacity to provide access to library collections and information. In a given fiscal year, the Library of Michigan will fund a limited number of grants that meet these priorities: Increase a library's capacity to offer services & information in areas of literacy. Increase a library's capacity to offer services & information in areas of local history or special collections. Increase a library's capacity to improve access to information for community users with limited access. Applicants may propose a project for any of the three priorities listed above. For example, grants may be awarded to: Develop or increase the scope of literacy projects in the broad sense, such as early literacy, financial literacy, digital literacy, ESL, etc.; Develop or improve access to local history or special collections; Improve access to online information and services for users with limited access. The grant period is one year (Oct.-Sept.) and funding is for $5,000 to $25,000 per year. The Lansing Community College Library is seeking a part-time reference and instruction librarian to join our team. Individuals who are collaborative, student centered and possess excellent customer service skills are encouraged to apply. Reference and Instruction Librarians assist students and employees with their academic research and general information needs, provide in-person and virtual reference assistance, teach information literacy skills utilizing a variety of instructional delivery modes and technologies, serve as library liaison to academic departments, participate in collection development activities, and develop web content, tutorials and library research guides. I'm with Cindy. To me, it's wrong to charge for DVD rentals. They're often cheaper than books at this point, and they're bought for with millage money. Ours check out for 7 days, then $1 per day afterwards. I'm hoping to go fine free in the future, though. MeL Minute: Fine Tuning Your Biography Search

Greetings Everyone, [A close up of text on a white background Description automatically generated]While the obvious place to search for great biographies in MeL's eResources may seem to be Biography Reference Center, we've found that Explora, History Refence Center, and Literary Reference Center are options rich in content as well. Biography Reference Center provides thousands of reliable full-text biographies, including the complete full text run of Biography Today and Biography, plus narrative and historical biographies not available in other databases. In addition to keyword search, users can locate biographies by subject, occupation, nationality, activity, gender, lifespan and more. Explora is the best option for biographies of present-day individuals, such as celebrities. The search results include video clips, primary source documents, reviews, conference materials, reports, encyclopedias (including Funk & Wagnall's New World Encyclopedia 2018), trade publications and eBooks. Additionally, there are hundreds of newspaper, academic journal, and magazine articles to consider. History Reference Center provides biographies of historical figures, documents, photos, maps, film, and video from leading history journals. Literary Reference Center includes biographies of literary figures, plot summaries, literary criticism, book reviews, reference books, magazine articles and author interviews. When researching biographies, take into consideration the occupation and time period of the person you're investigating. Is he an historical figure or a 2019 pop star? Is she an author or an actor? The best eResources for historical biographies are Biography Reference Center and History Reference Center. Explora is a great eResource to use when learning about pop stars, actors or any present-day politician or mover and shaker. Literary Reference Center not only offers biographies about authors and poets, but it also gives users access to items such as author interviews and book reviews. All these details inform which eResources to use to get the most out of your search. If your library provides the advanced search option, think about utilizing it to fine-tune your results. For example, if you are searching for biographical information on Ron Howard, add actor or director in the second or third search box. When you do this, only the information relevant to his work as an actor or director shows up in your results. Learning about each eResource and choosing the one (or two or three...) best equipped to help you with your research (or satisfy your curiosity) may seem daunting at first. Take heart!
