Camilla Leach finally truly retired in 1924, primarily due to declining health after a fall, and losing her eyesight. She moved back east and died in Jonesville, Michigan (near Battle Creek) in 1930, while staying with a relative. Summary Ultimately known for her role as the founding librarian-manager of the Design (formerly Architecture and Allied Arts) Library at the University of Oregon, Miss Camilla Leach left a legacy of caring for student success and ambition throughout her long career. Only in the last third of her life did she find a role in the library, with the majority of her time spent in the classroom or dormitory, supervising and guiding the lives of young adults, especially girls. Miss Leach constantly updated her position during a long career trajectory, never losing her love of the arts and French culture and design. She travelled to Paris in her 30s, was committed to the plight of French orphans during WWI, and BTW, having mentioned Jonesville, whatever happened to the library vendor Book House? I know that they were most likely going out of business but never heard what happened. Many, many years ago I won a night's stay at the Jonesville B&B sponsored by this company. Bob Robert P. Question about alcohol tethers

We were approached today by a person wanting to hook their "Alcohol Scram" ankle tether up to our phone line to upload test results to their parole officer. According to the person, their parole officer said the local library would be able to assist them with this and they'd be needing to do it twice weekly for the duration of their parole. We were wondering: Is this something you've encountered / supported? An Evening with Howard Markel at The State Theatre in Bay City

The Friends of the Bay County Libraries are proud to present Michigan Notable Author Howard Markel, MD, PhD at The State Theatre in Bay City on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at 7:00 pm. Admission is FREE! Dr. Markel will present his latest book, "The Kelloggs: The Battling Brothers of Battle Creek". Copies of Markel's books will be on sale at the event, or you may bring your own for the book signing after the presentation. “The Kelloggs: The Battling Brothers of Battle Creek” paints an incredible picture of more than just the cereal brand most people connect to the name. This exceptionally written slice of American history weaves the non-fiction tale of two brothers with competing ideologies. Racism, Nazi eugenics, sanitariums, industry, humanity, generosity, and corn flakes makes for a story that is wildly popular with book clubs, those who enjoy a good story about Michigan entrepreneurs, and history buffs of all types. Presenter Recommendation: Naturalist Andrew Nowicki

Earlier this month, the Howell Carnegie District Library had Andrew Nowicki, a naturalist based in Fowlerville, present on Michigan Wildlife. Mr. Nowicki is passionate and enthusiastic about learning and teaching about living things. He has worked at the Howell Nature Center and is a recent graduate of zoology from MSU. Back in September 2018, he presented his first program with us on African Wildlife and Conservation based on his travels on the continent through MSU. At our program this month, Andrew shared pictures and sounds of common Michigan fauna as well as great information on habitats and animal spotting. He also brought with props including a daytime telescope he uses for animal watching. We had a good attendance for both of his events, with plenty of audience interaction, whether it was questions or sharing stories. The feedback from the audience both verbally and on our written event evaluations rated his programs excellent and included requests to have him return for future library programs. Mr. Nowicki is just starting out on his career as a nature educator and it's already a promising one, not just from our Library staff's perspective, but also based on audience feedback. Andrew is personable and knowledgeable; his presenter fee was very reasonable; and he has been a pleasure to work with. He's on our list of go-to presenters.
