I'm happy to announce that Stephanie Davis will be the new Manager of Group Purchasing at MCLS. She will begin on February 5. Stephanie has experience with license negotiations and brings a depth of knowledge of library operations to MCLS. Stephanie is currently the library director at North Central Michigan College in Petoskey. As director, she collaborated with the English Department to move the Writing Center into the library. She implemented LibGuides and led the restructure of the library website. Prior to that, Stephanie was director at Jackson College from 2012 to 2017. While there, she helped sharpen the library's strategic focus and managed the implementation of EBSCO Discovery Service. Stephanie's other jobs include information literacy coordinator at Northwestern Michigan College, outreach/instructional librarian at Kellogg Community College, and education librarian at Spring Arbor University. Exterior Book Drops

Hello Wonderful People, In this picture you will note, ye olde book drop. It is accessible to the public by an exterior slot and the metal lid can be closed at night. This means we can keep our book drop open at all times and we never have to worry about whatever pesky things someone might drop into it after hours. I would like to install something similar in our new branch library but I'm having a hard time finding a vendor that makes a lidded book drop like this one. Any suggestions? Thank you! Possible ADA problem in the making

As both a performer and librarian I was approached by a librarian for ideas on a possible ADA problem that could easily become a problem for all libraries. I'm also the mother of a hearing impaired daughter and appreciate the posting on program publicity about providing assistance with advance notice. This, however, might take that stated assistance and create problems with copyright, privacy and more. The library has a homebound resident wanting initially video access to library board meetings. They have been providing that by having a staff member tape them. Now there is a similar request to permit attending programs this way. The library would be unable to do this with their movie program and can see this being a problem beyond that for other programs. I agreed. Musicians, for example, would be ruled out for most 20th century music. The venue, not the performer, is liable for payment of royalties. As a storyteller, only material in the Public Domain would be able to be used. Sometimes I have received permission as long as electronic reproduction is not made. What would this do for Fair Use when a librarian does a storytime? It definitely goes beyond what is permitted under Fair Use. When the library director brought up privacy concerns for the audience, I suggested the camera angle avoid the audience. Later, thinking about my own programs, I realized this also will affect audience participation in a program, requiring permission forms. As an example of the latter, and the copyright issues, I told the director about a program I'm developing about prohibition (High Times in the Dry Times) which stretches from Michigan's entry into prohibition two years before the entire nation until its ending in 1933. This would possibly require royalties for some music such as "Happy Days Are Here Again." (Fortunately the Charleston and the song "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" just entered Public Domain.) The point is both lectures and concerts may require library payment for both spoken text and music still under copyright. (That could include some preschool songs if a child or, in this case, grandparent want to "attend" with a grandchild.) Looking at those privacy concerns, I plan to have individuals in the audience show large pictures about what I'm discussing. That idea of camera angles could require anyone not wishing to be seen sit behind the camera. Try that with preschoolers. I gave her the number of a lawyer particularly attuned to the copyright/royalty issue, but I'd love to have others here add their thoughts and suggestions before this becomes a new standard for libraries. In collaboration with both faculty and staff, the Digital Strategies Librarian explores, discovers, acquires, plans, implements, and manages digital projects and assets. Successful applicants to this position will possess technical skills and strong project management experience, as well as high-level knowledge of digital collections, metadata creation/maintenance, digital archiving, and preservation. Candidates must demonstrate experience with or a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Responsibilities include: - Providing leadership in prioritizing and managing digital initiatives throughout the project lifecycle for both digitized and born-digital items, including recommendations for related hardware/software and funding opportunities - Designing, documenting, and overseeing efficient digital production workflows that may involve stakeholders from library and university departments - Engaging with a variety of preservation tools and employing metadata standards, controlled vocabularies, and archival schema as appropriate, while keeping abreast of emerging trends in these areas - Ensuring best practices for digital collections as they relate to preservation, copyright, usability, and accessibility - Collaborating with subject librarians and disciplinary faculty to enhance discovery of digital collections for teaching and research purposes - Contributing to broader scholarly conversations through publications and presentations - Participating in library, university, and professional service activities Minimum qualifications: - Master of Library Science degree or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program. - Experience working on digital projects employing best practices in collection processing, description, access, management, and preservation.
