Autism Welcome Here Grant

Teen Video Challenge news from CSLP!

The 2019 Teen Video Challenge (TVC) is a go--with some exciting changes! [I've highlighted a few points below.] An overview of the TVC is--for the first time!--in the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) Teen Manual (pages 33-35). First, what will stay the same: * The TVC invites teens to create and submit a PSA-type video promoting reading and library use to other teens. * Each video needs to include the teen/teen team's interpretation of the 2019 CSLP theme, A Universe of Stories. * Videos need to adhere to copyright law and be appropriate for all ages. * Each of the 5 winning teens/teen teams will receive a $200 cash prize and the winners' local libraries will each receive a $50 gift certificate from Upstart. Now, for the changes: * Instead of state winners, there will be 5 national winners (this means that teens will submit videos directly to the national judging panel without having to go through State Reps). * CSLP will accept submissions June 1-Aug 2, 2019, so that the program can be incorporated into summer programs (it's still a great opportunity to partner with schools with video production classes or clubs; students can produce the videos as a class project and submit them in June!). * Videos [accepted] will be up to 60 seconds long. * Permission and model release forms won't be required until the finalists are selected, who will then need to supply the forms, completed correctly, to be able to win. The only form required upfront will be a simple online submission form. * The TVC Ad-Hoc Committee will convene a judging panel from CSLP partners and members. * Video uploads will not be limited to YouTube and Vimeo; rather, teens can upload their creations to the social media outlet of their choice. These changes were crafted to make the contest simpler for public librarians to promote and administer, and simpler too for teens to enter. Hopefully these changes will boost interest and participation in the contest and make it more accessible for all involved. Soon there will be additional resources about the 2019 TVC on the CSLP website for public librarians to use to more easily promote the contest to teens, including the submission form, a program logo, flyer, social media blurbs, and additional tools. Storytime Volunteer

Good afternoon, I was looking to see if any libraries in my area (Dearborn/Metro Detroit) accepted storytime volunteers. It's only been 2 weeks since I left my library in Indiana and I miss doing storytime for children. I would love to volunteer with my puppet Lateasha at a local library. We at Vernon Library are looking at the Launchpads, I have been told there is about 400 libraries in Michigan that currently have Launchpads. I'm interested in some feed back. Do you loan them out or are the on site only? What age ranges do you have? Does anyone have the GED or ACT and how does loaning work? Do you do a deposit? MeL Minute: Where did the teen portal go?

Accessing these eResources is made simpler by using the Subject search on the eResources page. Visit MeL.org and click on eResources in the navigation menu at the top of the page. Once you are there, click on the "All Subjects" drop down menu and scroll down until you see "Teens (23)". Scroll down to see the full list. Using the "All Subjects" search tool is the best way to find groups of related eResources and is similar to the portals that used to be part of MeL. This is part of our efforts to respond to the way that people were actually using the Teen portal according to Google Analytics statistics. Over half of visitors to the Teen portal homepage left almost immediately for the eResources page. Of those that stayed, most went to Homework Help. Once on the Homework Help pages, just under half of visitors still didn't find what they were looking for and went next to eResources for the complete list. We've tried to short-circuit this unproductive loop by providing direct and complete access for teens and teachers on the eResources page, the ultimate destination for most of the visitors to the previous Teen portal. Certain eResources are tagged as "Best Bets" and other eResources are tagged as "Popular". A "Best Bet" eResource is one that is most likely to deliver the desired search results within a particular subject search and these will appear at the very top of any search. A "Popular" eResource is one that is heavily used. Explora for High Schools, NoveList Plus and Opposing Viewpoints in Context are the "Best Bets" in the Teen subject area.
