Part Time Youth Librarian Position

The Harper Woods Public Library is looking for an enthusiastic, patron-focused person to work as a Youth Librarian (part time). Evening and weekend hours will be required. House approves full federal funding of library programs

From: Don Wood <dwood(a)ala.org> Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2017 12:40 PM Subject: House approves full federal funding of library programs American Library Association (ALA) members have been working tirelessly to defend federal library funding since March, when the president announced his intention to eliminate Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)<http://www.districtdispatch.org/2017/05/stark-budget-cuts-library-funding/>. At this point in the decision-making process, it looks like our efforts are paying off. I am pleased to report that on September 14, the full House of Representatives voted as part of a large spending package (H.R. 3354<https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/3354>) not to make any cuts in federal funding for IMLS. This includes all funding for IMLS programs under the Library Services and Technology Act, and for the Department of Education’s Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) program. Congratulations to everyone who has taken action to help #saveIMLS. Many of us called and emailed our members of Congress. Many of us retweeted action alerts issued by the ALA Washington Office at key stages in the campaign. Some of us wrote op-eds for local newspapers. Some coordinated with state librarians to identify the impact of IMLS funding on local libraries and even hosted congressional staffers at our libraries during the summer. Together we—ALA members and library advocates everywhere—are not only defending our nation’s libraries but are also showing that libraries are indispensable in our communities. We are most successful when we send clear, consistent messages at just the right times in the federal decision-making process. Thanks to the leadership and expertise of our staff in ALA’s Washington Office, we know exactly when our advocacy can be most effective. It’s not yet time to declare victory in the fight to #saveIMLS<https://twitter.com/hashtag/SaveIMLS?src=hash>. With last week’s vote, the House of Representatives has now finished its work on the FY2018 appropriations bills. While the full Senate is not likely to take up its own spending bill until late this year, we are encouraged by the funding increases<http://www.districtdispatch.org/2017/09/senate-boosts-funding-imls-lsta-tha…> recommended by the Senate Appropriations Committee earlier this month. ALA members may need to push hard to retain funding gains made in the Senate once the process of resolving differences with the House bill begins. free smart board

We have a SmartBoard that we purchased in 2000 that we no longer use up for grabs. We have not used it for a number of years. It's an SB 560 Pro with floor stand. It has a matte finish optimized for projectors and acts a a touch screen. Full disclosure: the last time I tried to use it there was a problem. The software I have is either not compatible with Windows 7 or there is a problem with the touch screen cable. It would not respond to touch screen setup. Goodbye from Ray Arnett

Dear Friends in the Library Community, I have accepted a call to pastor a small church in Anderson, South Carolina and recently resigned from the Fremont Area District Library effective October 20, 2017. My family and I will be moving to South Carolina that following week. Until that time, I will be at the Fremont library and may see some of you, however, I did want to express my general appreciation to my fellow library workers. I have enjoyed working with many of you over the past 16 years in Michigan libraries. It has been a very rewarding time with some challenges along the way. Thank you to each of you for your encouragement and partnership in serving the wonderful state of Michigan with quality library services. Wayne State SIS Faculty Hires, Promotions, and Retirements

The Wayne State School of Information Sciences welcomes two new tenure track faculty for fall 2017: Christine D'Arpa joins the SIS faculty from the iSchool at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where she completed doctoral studies in Library and Information Science. Over the summer she successfully defended her dissertation entitled, "Procure, propagate, and diffuse among the people": The information services of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1862-1888." Laura Sheble joins the SIS faculty from Duke University where she was the Margolis Fellow in Data Science at the Robert J. Margolis, MD, Center for Health Policy. Sheble received her PhD in 2014 from the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She is a 2002 alumna of the Wayne State University School of Information Sciences. The following SIS faculty received tenure and/or promotions as of fall 2017: Hermina Anghelescu was promoted to professor. Deborah Charbonneau was promoted to associate professor with tenure.
