Are there any libraries in the lower peninsula interested in hosting John Smolens?. We'd like to host in him in September, but he'd like to have some other speaking opportunities below the bridge if it works out. I heard him speak in Ludington a few weeks back and he was very engaging. I'm sitting at the circulation desk just now. The school bus pulls up and drops 43 kids off for our summer reading program!!! Today is the first day of the bus service, in cooperation with the local school, bringing children from the 5 day cares in town to the library for our program. We read to them and go to the day cares all school year long, but the summer presented some problems doing that....so the bus gets them on Wednesdays and Thursdays and brings them to us!!! Source: http://www.ala.org/tools/readytocode On Thursday, June 22, 2017, the American Library Association announced a competitive grant program sponsored by Google<https://blog.google/topics/education/libraries-across-us-are-ready-code/> that will fund a cohort of school and public libraries to develop resources to help get U.S. libraries "Ready to Code." The $500,000 pilot program is part of Phase III of Libraries Ready to Code, an ongoing collaboration between ALA and Google to ensure expert library professionals are prepared to develop and deliver programming that promotes computer science and computational thinking among youth, two skills that will be required for challenges and jobs of the future. 25 to 50 participating libraries will receive funding from ALA, along with consulting expertise and operational support from Google. Individual libraries may use funding for devices, staffing, marketing and other costs associated with piloting an educational toolkit developed in partnership, by libraries, for libraries. The toolkit, set to release in conjunction with National Library Week in April 2018, will consist of computer science resources that libraries find most useful for designing and implementing youth computer science programming. This cohort of libraries will also initiate a community of practice to sustain momentum and build expertise across thousands of school and public U.S. libraries. The Library Assistant will also provide client-friendly services at the circulation desk and work collaboratively with other library assistants on various circulation activities. Duties and Responsibilities * Manages the periodicals and serials using the serials control module of the integrated library system (ILS). * Performs copy cataloging of monographs and serials. * Participates in the shelving of materials and the maintenance of print periodicals. * Processes library materials that may require stamping and labeling. * Performs Circulation Desk services using the circulation module of the ILS. * Responds to patrons with technological and general inquiries. * Assists patrons in the use of the printer, copier, fax and scanner. * Collaborates with staff in maintaining the print collection and course reserves. * Facilitates interlibrary loan requests. * Opens and closes the library, as assigned. * Assists with other activities, as assigned. Chl furniture recommendation

Hello library friends - I am looking for some whimsical fun chair/lounge for our children's department and am having trouble finding anything that fits in our spaces. Any recommendations would be helpful. The niches we are looking to fill are: 1. A corner - we can go out about 36" from the wall - are hoping to have a cool soft reading area spot (something with a back...) 2. A 48" (approximate) square space that we are looking for a double seater, also with a back. We are hoping to find something unique and fun - not just another lounge chair... Any suggestions would be helpful. I've already contacted Library Design and Custer.
