Neat endcap card catalogs idea to share

Hi Everyone! Just sharing an idea.. Wanted to share with you our latest tech project here at Otsego District Library in case it might be helpful to other folks in library land - I know some of you already have done this too but some might be interested in the idea - We created touchscreen card catalogs. I did this at my former library also about 4 years ago and the touch screen technology has come a long way since then. They are working really great. I was inspired by the digital endcaps at the Nashville Public Library but we could not afford the product they used. We created our own version of this at 1/20th the cost. I am pretty excited how they turned out and they are working great so far with our catalog! We used 27 inch ACER monitors and flipped and mounted them vertically. We used a very small processor - The Dell Micro PC 3000 Series - and put it on the bottom shelf behind the endcap. We drilled a hole through the endcap for the cords. Verso/Auto-graphics is our card catalog. We added 3 widgets to the bottom of our Verso homepage to make scrolling covers of New Books, New Movies, and New Audiobooks. We set up the computers to have a screensaver showing slides that advertise our programs when people are not using the catalog. They work just like a smart phone - you can shrink and enlarge the text the same way as on an IPhone, and a keyboard pops up when you click in the text bars. Nick Heimler, Heimler Consulting, does our technology and he helped me find just what I was looking for - I wanted something large and thin. He installed them for us and set them up to display vertically. When we removed our old catalog stands, our maintenance man put trim pieces to match the endcaps up to cover where they had been screwed to the endcaps, and built a fence to match the other endcaps in our children's area. It turned out really nice. We have been getting a lot of positive patron comments on them and the kids and teens especially like using them. Thought it was a cool idea to share. US DOE needs to hear from you!

*Another* opportunity to provide input to support school libraries (this one at the *National* Level versus the State): I received an email asking me to pass on this request (*see below*) to respond to a *US Department of Education* survey through my role as an ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Affiliate rep. The survey is *very short *and includes open-ended questions. [5 questions: 2-demographics; 3-responses] This may be a great way for school library supporters to respond to indicate: the priority and need for Effective School Library Programs and School Librarians, as well as to request Regional Center support for effective school library programs. [I believe the deadline to submit a survey response is August 18] *Michigan is 41st on 4th Grade Reading achievement per NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress); and is 47th in the ratio of students per certified school library media specialist.* Thank you! The Department of Education (Department) funds these Centers to provide technical assistance to State education agencies (SEAs) that builds SEA capacity to: support local educational agencies (LEAs or districts) and schools, especially low-performing districts and schools; improve educational outcomes for all students; close achievement gaps; and improve the quality of instruction. Before a competition for the Centers program is held, the ETAA requires the establishment of ten *Regional Advisory Committees (RACs)*. The purpose of these committees is to collect information on the educational needs of each of the ten regions. To the extent the Secretary deems appropriate, the Department will use the information submitted by the RACs, along with other relevant regional surveys of needs, to establish priorities for the next cohort of Centers. Library of Michigan MeL Surveys coming soon!

Good afternoon, the Library of Michigan is working on our biannual surveys for library patrons and library staff about MeL and statewide services. We do surveys every two years to provide data for our reports to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which provides funding for MeL databases, MeLCat and other statewide programs. We also use the data to improve our services to you. The surveys will be available next week. The Library of Michigan is asking for two things. 1. First, please share the library staff survey widely as we want to hear from all library types and all levels of library staff. 2. Second, please post the library patron survey widely for your community - on your web page, in your social media, etc. We want to hear from as many users as possible.
