And, now, we will also have more space! Construction begins August 2016 with completion in spring 2017! Exciting! Increasing community engagement means keeping our staffing up. We have a 20-hour Adult Services Librarian position available. This has been our e-resources position, managing the many databases to which we subscribe separately, as well as the Adult AV selector, including Top Box Office DVDs in Demand (no holds), DVDs, audiobooks and e-books.All of our Librarians are cross-trained. You may not do a story time, but you’ll probably assist with desk coverage in Youth and at Circulation as well as some other programming (Quidditch Tournament anyone?) We believe we are the place to connect—with warm and friendly staff, the Web, and the community. If that’s your desire, interest, and future vision, too, then we need you! Cromaine District Library is located near the intersection of M-59 and US-23—easy to get to from Detroit, Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Flint. Cromaine-Village (built in 1927 and expanded in 1980) is the main library with the largest collection and programming space, but we also offer a popular collection and an increasing number of programs at the Crossroads Branch, in a strip mall, established 2005, but closing in 2017 to concentrate our resources, human and financial, in one location. Cromaine wins grants, including several National Endowment for the Arts’ The Big Read. Grants for technology in Youth, local business sponsorships for an expanded summer concert series, exhibits from the Smithsonian and to be a pilot for a national grant program—we are a place to connect to culture, music, technology, makers, as well as reading in every format. We are an OverDrive (TLN’s Download Destination) plus Advantage and hoopla from Midwest Tape, library. Many of the grants support a very full event calendar (check It out at www.cromaine.org/Programs / Events). And, MLS staff wage rates have been increased effective July 12: now $19.00 per hour to start, 20 hours per week; includes some evenings and weekends. MLA membership and national conference attendance (in rotation) paid. After successful completion of the 90-day introductory period, an increase to $19.50 is planned. Part-time positions at Cromaine have prorated paid time off, plus holiday pay, paid birthday, and paid bereavement leave as well as an opportunity to participate in AFLAC, but no other paid benefits. I'm trying to track down people who worked for Olson Library as students at Northern Michigan University. If you or someone you know was a library student employee at Olson Library, would you let me know, please? Name (and name when enrolled, if different) NMU Degree Graduation year Contact information We'd like to find out how working in our library impacted our students so that we can tell our story to our community. We're also trying to build a contact list to share information and get feedback. We may even be able to host a library student employee reunion in the next year or so. My quest has had interesting results so far. Two special surprises: - I met a woman who worked for our library from 1937-41. She was a student worker for our namesake, Lydia M. Olson. - I learned that a librarian I knew from my Chicago days was a student employee here when she was an undergraduate in the 1970s. Thanks much, Leslie Leslie A. This led to developing a web page of Resources for Bilingual Library Programs for Spanish-Speaking Children and Families at https://www.tsl.texas.gov/ldn/youthservices/Spanish, which includes indexes to 86 programs in those manuals plus many other programming resources. The web page is still a work in progress and I hope you will let me know if you have suggestions for links to any additional resources. Libraries Read: 1 Book discussion events - Michigan location added! Nicholas Carr asked, in a celebrated Atlantic Monthly cover story. Carr delves further into the question in his book The Shallows: What The Internet Is Doing To Our Brains, the selected title for "Libraries Read: 1 Book." MCLS invited library staff across Indiana and Michigan to place votes on one of four titles to select one book that we will all read and discuss together for professional development. Nicholas Carr's book captured the most votes. In The Shallows, he explores the net's intellectual and cultural consequences. MCLS encourages library staff to read the book throughout the summer, then join us in a Twitter chat and regional discussions about the book. According to Randy Dykhuis, MCLS Executive Director, "During 2014, MCLS conducted a series of community conversations with librarians throughout Indiana and Michigan, utilizing the tools from the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation. The desire to have discussions in many formats, and to communicate with one another outside of our silos was a recurring theme. On Tues, Wed and Thurs, Aug 2 - 4, 1:30 - 3:30 pm EST, MCLS will be offering our online workshop, Assigning Library of Congress call numbers: basic. This workshop will teach users how Library of Congress call numbers are created. You will learn what the different LC designations are. You will learn what cutters are and how to assign them using the cutter table. Users will assign call numbers to items.
