Librarian Intern positions are reserved for graduate students currently enrolled in a master's-level library science program at an ALA-accredited university. This position is classified as a temporary part-time position and is non-exempt from overtime and provides no benefits afforded to employees classified as "regular". The nature of the work requires daytime, evening, and weekend hours. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Provide Reference, Readers' Advisory, and Roving Services to the public: * Accurately and efficiently answer patron questions in various forms * Assist and train patrons in the navigation of the library website and the library's online services * Assist patrons with self-checkout stations and other library equipment * Respond to patron questions regarding their library account, including holds, interlibrary loan, program registration, and account issues, following established policies and procedures to select appropriate solutions and communicate options to the patron * Demonstrate and troubleshoot the use of equipment, PCs, and related software as needed * Locate and retrieve library materials requested by patrons according to established procedures * Perform reader's advisory by suggesting age-appropriate materials to patrons * Maintain neat and orderly library appearance * Assist at all public service desks as needed * Assist with checkout, check-in, and shelving functions as needed, following established guidelines and procedures * Greet and assist patrons throughout the entire library, assessing patron needs and referring as needed * Refer patron queries and issues beyond the Librarian Intern's scope of authority to the Librarian-in-Charge or library administration as appropriate * Assist Librarian or Program Specialist with programs for patrons * Selects, develops, and maintains assigned collections * Assist the Librarian with collection development and maintenance tasks * Other Duties and Responsibilities o Compile, review and/or interpret statistical data o Independently or with others, research, recommend, implement and monitor projects as assigned o Serve on workgroups/committees and participate in library initiatives as assigned o Stay informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, SharePoint, library newsletter and blog. Contribute content as appropriate o Enforce library policies using a polite and professional approach o Accept special assignments or duties in support of the library's goals and objectives REQUIRED EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE * Current enrollment in a library science program from an ALA-accredited school * One year of experience in a customer service environment * Working knowledge of common computer applications, including Microsoft Office and the Internet * Punctuality and dependability * Consistent display of public service attitude that reflects the library's values * Ability to complete special projects while maintaining routine duties * Knowledge of library operations and services, including an understanding of and adherence to fundamental principles of open access to library materials and the privacy rights of patrons * Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment * Ability to maintain a calm atmosphere, ensure safety, and respond to emergencies * Ability to persuade, negotiate and resolve conflict * Ability to work with patrons of varied backgrounds, ages, and abilities * Written and verbal communication skills at the level typically acquired with enrollment in a Master's degree program PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Coursework related to area of focus/department * Prior professional experience in a public library ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS * Ability to lift and carry boxes up to 25 lbs. and push carts weighing up to 200 lbs. * Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time, and the ability to bend, reach, stoop, or crouch when assisting patrons * Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permits the employee to communicate in writing and verbally * Sufficient vision which permits the employee to produce and review a wide variety of materials in both electronic and hard copy form * Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions in a fast-paced environment Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Calling all Michigan libraries! The MI Harwood Cohort is doubling its capacity.

The Library of Michigan<http://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan> and MCLS are pleased to announce a second round to our several-month long community engagement training program for Michigan library staff. The training will be led by coaches from the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation<http://www.theharwoodinstitute.org/> . It will be robust, extensive, and is being offered at no charge to selected Michigan libraries, with generous stipends provided through Library of Michigan LSTA funding. The program On October 5-6, 2016, a cohort of up to 50 Michigan library staff will convene in Lansing, Michigan for a 1.5 day workshop led by two certified Harwood Institute coaches. That training will be followed up by nine months of coaching calls from Harwood, and guidance and support from Harwood trained Library of Michigan and MCLS staff. The Harwood Public Innovators Workshop is a 1.5 day experience to help you and your organization learn what it means to turn outward - to use the community, not your conference room, as your reference point for choices and action. Although free of charge to participate, this program will be rigorous. With support and guidance from MCLS and the Library of Michigan, cohort members are expected to develop action plans, implement those plans, and demonstrate how their efforts are making a change in their communities. Only those who can commit the time and energy are encouraged to participate. The Library of Michigan and MCLS have been using the tools of the Harwood Institute and sharing them with libraries since 2013. We are excited to be able to support training for a cohort of Michigan library staff. Eligibility * Applicants must be an employee or trustee of a Michigan library. * Applicants may be from any type of library; academic, public, school, institutional or special. * A maximum of 2 persons per library will be awarded scholarships. * It is strongly encouraged that applications include two persons. Applications including two persons will be ranked higher based on our criteria. * Collaborative applications with individuals from different libraries in geographic proximity are welcomed, and will receive the same ranking as two individuals from the same library. o Libraries that have already sent staff to Harwood training and are looking for additional training would also have equal consideration. The award * Those awarded this opportunity will receive free tuition for the training and follow-up support. * Those awarded will receive stipends for two nights hotel lodging (strongly encouraged October 4 and 5) and travel expenses. The stipends will be on a sliding scale depending on the distance of travel from Lansing, MI: * Zone 1 (Less than 100 miles from Lansing, MI) the library will receive $395 for a single person, and an additional $295 for the second. It is encouraged to carpool to conserve resources. * Zone 2 (100-250 miles from Lansing, MI) the library will receive $545 for a single person, and an additional $295 for the second. It is encouraged to carpool to conserve resources. * Zone 3 (More than 250 miles from Lansing, MI) the library will receive $795 for a single person, and an additional $295 for the second. It is encouraged to carpool to conserve resources. * In the event of a collaborative submission please note in the application which library/participant is responsible for transportation. A space is included in the application for this. Meals and lodging are included. Dinner on Wednesday October 5, will be a dine-around. That meal is factored into the travel stipend. The workshop will be held at Lansing Community College - West Campus. Lodging will be at a nearby hotel. There will be a pre-workshop dinner held in Lansing on Tuesday evening October 4, 2016. Timetable - Deadlines * Applications must be submitted by 5pm (Eastern) July 14, 2016. * Notification to recipients will be on or before August 5, 2016. Checks (payable to the library) will soon follow. * Recipients will need to make their own hotel reservations. It is encouraged to make the reservations as soon as possible after notification. The Allegan District Library is looking for an outgoing, self-motivated and detail oriented individual to become part of our dynamic team. The successful candidate will provide front line customer service at our service desks on a temporary basis throughout our busy summer months. Essential job duties include: Ensuring an exemplary library experience by greeting, assisting, instructing and promoting library services to members in a positive and pleasant manner. Using the library’s automated circulation system to circulate materials to library members including checking materials in and out, processing holds, and registering borrowers, collecting fines and fees and processing lost/paid items per set procedures. Provide reference and readers’ advisory, computer, database, inter library loan and referral assistance to members directly, by telephone or by email. Assist with troubleshooting problems and training library members in the use of the public access catalog, internet, electronic databases and other library resources. Assist at circulation desk. Check materials in and out, register members and perform other general tasks pertaining to member service. Encourage, establish and maintain effective working relationships with the library director and coworkers. Performing essential daily operations including opening and closing of circulation desk and building, counting money, emptying the book drop and shelving library materials when needed. Perform related work as required. Job Requirements: A high school diploma and two years of customer service related work experience. Full/Part Time & Hours: Part Time 17 hours per week includes some nights and weekends.
