MI Genealogical Council, Lucy Mary Kellogg Award

Attention Michigan genealogy and local history librarians and researchers - the Michigan Genealogical Council is seeking nominees for the 2016 Lucy Mary Kellogg Award and is asking for your help in getting the word out! As genealogy and local history librarians, we are often uniquely connected to our communities. If you know of someone who is active in your area, is a member of one of the MGC societies, and deserves recognition for their hard work and contributions to local history and genealogy resources, please consider nominating them or passing this information on to someone in your local genealogical or historical society. Since 1992, the Michigan Genealogical Council has offered the Lucy Mary Kellogg award as a way to honor the rich genealogical contributions brought to our community by dedicated members of Michigan's genealogical societies. Named for the first woman and first Midwesterner to be chosen for the National Genealogy Hall of Fame, the award allows us to celebrate our most active members for their service. The award has been given to twenty individuals since its creation, generating hundreds of dollars in donations to local societies, the Library of Michigan, and the Archives of Michigan. Because of a recent drop in submissions, the last Lucy Mary Kellogg award was granted in 2012 and we need help bringing attention to the award to receive enough submissions to continue recognizing the valuable offerings brought by our members. To gather judges and award the 2016 Lucy Mary Kellogg award, we need to receive a minimum of three submissions by June 1st. To nominate someone for the award you just submit a brief nomination form and a letter of recommendation (up to 500 words) which lists the individual's achievements and contributions. Societies are encouraged to solicit multiple letters of recommendation from groups or individuals familiar with the nominee and their work. As with research - the more evidence, the better! Book Shelves available at Grosse Pointe Barnes and Noble

Hi all, The Barnes and Noble located in Grosse Pointe has some book shelves that they are no longer able to use, and they are looking to donate them to a good home. There are approximately eight units and they have to be assembled front to back as shown in the attached photo. They are a wood composite and she said they are in very good condition. The are approximately 60" by 36". The contact person is Laurel Koenig @ 313-884-5220. Hi, Ann-- The Dawes Arboretum in Ohio has been doing this for several years. They do a wonderful job! (I was one of their authors. They used "Bravest of the Brave" one year for their summer book walk.) They have permanent signposts with removable flat panels for the books--tilted at an angle. Then every year they print a book's pages on waterproof materials and post the book along the reading trail. (Which is also wheelchair accessible.) They do a kick-off literacy day party with the arboretum's gift shop supplying and selling the author's books. They invite the author to speak, and put him/her up for the night. They make a big deal of it and often have a great turn out. On the day I was to speak/read at the kick-off party, it rained. Nevertheless, we still had a great crowd with umbrellas. I loved watching the kids run from page to page along the trail. The folks at the Dawes also had a signer there for several speech-impaired children who were attending. If you can talk the park into making it a permanent exhibit, that would be great. Kids would look forward to what new book was in the park. Making the storywalk more of an integral part of a park visit will make a bigger impression on young readers/park visitors. If you want any pics, let me know. I have a few from the Dawes I can send. The Branch District Library <https://www.branchdistrictlibrary.org/> Board of Trustees seeks a progressive and original leader who can and will capitalize on the Library's 2015 millage success and create a sound forward-thinking plan for the Library's future. The Library staff (37 employees, 23 FTE) serves the 46,905 citizens of Branch County and Allen Township in Hillsdale County with a $1.6 million operating budget. The Branch District Library was formed in 1991 by combining the resources and services of individual public libraries in Coldwater, Algansee, Bronson, Quincy, Sherwood, and Union Township. Branches of the District Library remain active in those communities, each of which has its own unique character, community support, programs and services. The challenge for the new Director will be to help the Library and its services flourish with its communities, move forward with innovation to restore hours and services and become recognized as the community resource. Successful experience as a library director reporting to a governing board, experience leading and implementing a strategic planning process and experience with a successful millage campaign are highly desirable. 2016 LoC Literacy application available

The Library of Congress Center for the Book is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2016 Library of Congress Literacy Awards. These awards are given to outstanding organizations working to promote literacy, both in the United States and worldwide. The awards seek to recognize organizations doing exemplary, innovative and replicable work over a sustained period of time and to encourage new groups, organizations and individuals to become involved. All groups that work to promote literacy are encouraged to apply. Applications from groups that have applied before are welcome. Applications must be received no later than midnight on March 31, 2016.
