Deadline for MCLS Innovation in Libraries Annual Meeting is Monday!

The deadline to register for the November 18 MCLS Annual Meeting is this Monday, November 14! Don't miss out on learning about innovative ideas you can do at your library! The theme of this year's meeting will be Innovation in Libraries. Our morning keynote speaker will be Maxine Bleiweis of Maxine Bleiweis and Associates who will present on her experiences with innovation as director of the Westport Public Library in Connecticut. Our afternoon keynote speaker will be Barbara I. Dewey, Dean, University Libraries and Scholarly Communications at Penn State University who will present on new innovative projects happening at her university. We will have a "state of libraries" presentation from Randy Riley, State Librarian of the Library of Michigan and Jake Speer, State Librarian of the Indiana State Library. A business meeting will be held during lunch (which will include an important bylaws amendment vote). The meeting will conclude with your ability to share your thoughts/ideas/feedback regarding the future of MCLS while participating in roundtable discussions with the MCLS board of directors. This year, to make our Annual Meeting more accessible to members throughout our region, we will have live speakers at three locations for different parts of the day and will simulcast these presentations to the other two locations. You can choose to attend at: * Lansing Community College - West Campus, Lansing, Michigan * Indiana Wesleyan University - North Campus, Indianapolis, Indiana * Northern Michigan University - Olson Library, Marquette, Michigan This program is open to all MCLS members as well as those who may be interested in joining. MeL Minute - Kids InfoBits Enhancements

Hi all, MeL database provider Gale Cengage has announced two exciting enhancements to Kids InfoBits<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-gale.php?database=ITKE> (found in MeL Kids Homework Helpers<http://kids.mel.org/HomeworkHelpers>). Kids InfoBits is designed for beginning researchers grades K-5 and covers curriculum related and age appropriate content. Gale partnered with Visual Learning Systems<http://www.visuallearningsys.com/>, an educational science publisher ... to provide high quality, visual-based content that instructs, challenges, and inspires young learners. 1. Nearly 600 high-quality educational videos on concepts essential to STEM learning have been added to Kids InfoBits. Each is approximately 1-3 minutes in length, and can be easily incorporated into Primary and Elementary classroom instruction. Some even pose critical thinking questions for the learner to contemplate. Videos intended for grades K-2 feature: magnets, nature, the sun, water, and simple machines. Videos intended for grades 3-5 include: energy, planet earth, worms, plants, and the wheel and axle. After performing a search, available videos are shown under Content Types 2. In response to user feedback, the overall default font size has been increased and a feature to further increase font size for all documents in Kids InfoBits has been added. Once a document has been selected and is displayed, an icon will appear in the right corner and offer the option of changing the font size. The change will remain in effect for the session. Kids InfoBits features integrated G Suite for Education<http://www.gale.com/google> and Microsoft Office 365 tools. After authentication, users can sign in with their Google or Microsoft account credentials to access Google Drive, Docs and Classroom, in addition to Microsoft OneDrive and OneNote. "Light the Way: Outreach to the Underserved" Grant opportunity

The ALSC/Candlewick Press "Light the Way: Outreach to the Underserved" Grant was formed in honor of Newbery Medalist and Geisel Honoree author Kate DiCamillo, and the themes represented in her books. The award consists of a $3,000 grant to assist a library in conducting exemplary outreach to underserved populations through a new program or an expansion of work already being done. The ALSC Library Service to Special Population Children and Their Caregivers Committee<http://www.ala.org/alsc/aboutalsc/coms/pg1childadv/als-lscsn> will select the winner of this award based on an application process. Special population children may include those who have learning or physical differences, those who speak English as a second language, those who are in a non-traditional school environment, those who live in foster care settings, those who are in the juvenile justice system, those who live in gay and lesbian families, those who have teen parents, and those who need accommodation service to meet their needs. The winner of this award will be announced at ALA's Midwinter Meeting. Grant applications are due December 1, 2016. With "Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum" Author Lisa Wheeler [https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/MILOM/2015/01/4171…] 2017 Tour Requests for MI Reads Author Now Open to Public Libraries [BGBG Book Cover]Michigan Reads! is an early literacy program designed to highlight the importance of reading and sharing books with children, especially toddlers through early elementary school age, which is a critical developmental time. Early literacy skills lay the foundation for reading and school success. Michigan Reads! also raises awareness of the intergenerational nature of literacy and engages the community of parents, caregivers, librarians and teachers to make fluent reading possible in all communities. For the 2017 program, the Library of Michigan has selected Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum by Lisa Wheeler as the featured book. During the winter months, the Library will distribute nearly 7,000 reading kits to classrooms and libraries. Lisa Wheeler will visit schools and libraries throughout the state this March, coordinated through the public libraries.
