Mr. Abdul-Jabbar will visit Kalamazoo for a Meet the Author event at Miller Auditorium<http://www.millerauditorium.com> on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 7 pm. 2017 marks the 15th Anniversary of Reading Together. To commemorate this occasion, KPL wanted to choose a book that addresses important yet divisive issues facing not only our community but the whole country. Writings on the Wall came to the attention of the selection committee immediately upon its release in August and quickly became the obvious choice, not only for the breadth of its content but also for the notoriety of its author. Honed from his life experience both on and off the basketball court, observations and conversations in his everyday life, Abdul-Jabbar explores American politics, racism, religion, gender issues, classism, the news media and much more. Copies will be available for check out at all Kalamazoo Public Library locations beginning November 1. The 2017 Reading Together program will feature Kareem Abdul-Jabbar speaking about his book in an interview format, live, at Miller Auditorium on Tuesday, March 14, at 7 pm, followed by Q&A and book signing. Books will be sold at the event by local, independent bookstore, Michigan News Agency. This event is free and open to the public. Throughout the month of March and into April, Reading Together will feature several programs that explore the concepts and themes presented in Abdul-Jabbar’s work, with an opportunity for engaging discussion and revelation. The purpose of Reading Together is to build a stronger community with deeper connections through the common experience of reading the same book and exploring its themes together. [Cathy Lancaster]A reminder that the 2017 Letters About Literature<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> (LAL) program is now accepting submissions. The Library of Michigan is host for this national program from the Library of Congress. LAL is a reading-writing contest that invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to write letters to authors of books that have changed their lives. This program gives students the opportunity to reflect deeply on a book. As readers, they come to understand how literature is more than assignment, but also a life changing experience. Children and teens can participate on their own or as part of a library or class project. The 2017 letters will be due in two waves. Level III entries (Grades 9-12) have a deadline of December 2, 2016, and Level I and II entries (Grades 4-6 and 7-8) have a deadline of January 9, 2017. The state and national winners will be announced in May 2017. Michigan 2016 Fall E-Rate Training Dates Announced! Training will be held on October 31 at Kent ISD, November 1 at Winding Brook in Shepherd (ITV option), and November 2 at Genesee ISD. The day will be broken into two parts: 8:30-11:30 E-Rate Overview for beginners and noon-4:00 E-Rate Update. We are happy to announce that Becky Rains, E-Rate Central Consultant, will be leading the training. Becky has been actively involved with the E-rate program application process since 2001. She served as the Arkansas State E-rate Coordinator for 14 years before retiring and joining E-Rate Central. Becky will also be providing PIA support for the state. Write Michigan Call for Volunteer Reviewers

Hi all, Kent District Library and our partner Schuler Books are working to finalize our list of volunteer reviewers for the 2017 Write Michigan Short Story contest. To find out more about the contest, you can visit our webpage at www.writemichigan.org<http://www.writemichigan.org>. Volunteer reviewers read and rate the short story submissions in order to determine the top ten semi-finalists. Details: -The short story contest has three age categories - adult (18+), teen (12-17) and youth (11 and under). Writers need to live in Michigan (students count). This year we have added a Spanish-Language contest category for all ages. So if you happen to be literate in Spanish, please indicate on the information I am collecting below. -Winners earn cash prizes and are included in a printed anthology. -Volunteers read about 10-13 stories each (depending on the category and how many submissions we read). Each story is read by two people. -Stories are anonymous (unless the author includes their name on the PDF). -We ask you not to review in the category where you or someone you know (family or friend) is entering. -Submissions are available to volunteers online. Each volunteer has a login. -Reading/reviewing takes place between Monday, December 5 and Friday, December 30. Every year, we have reviewers that can't complete their assignments (life happens). So now, we ask reviewers if they could review a few stories last minute and it is so helpful. Please indicate below if you would be willing to do that too. Those reviews would happen Friday, December 31 - Tuesday, January 3 (you would get an email on Friday, December 30 for your new assignment). Ready to go?
