No Cost Online ESL Program for MI Public Libraries

Basic ESL for Libraries is an English language learning course designed for public libraries, library patrons and library literacy programs. The online course offers native language support in 19 languages. There are no costs to libraries or library patrons to use the online program. Already have Mango, Rocket Languages or Pronunciator? That's great, however Basic ESL focuses on teaching English language learners how to speak, read and write English at a level that goes beyond travel phrases and games. Basic ESL provides students an effective, directive path to learning English fast and succeeding in their schools and community. April 24, 2015 POSTING: LIBRARY DIRECTOR - YPSILANTI DISTRICT LIBRARY (MI) The Ypsilanti District Library Board of Trustees seeks applications for the position of Library Director of the Ypsilanti District Library (YDL) due to the upcoming retirement of the current Director. The Library Board seeks an experienced, strategic, and creative leader who will build on the library's success as an innovative and service-oriented Class VI Michigan Library. YDL is a district public library serving the City of Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township, and a portion of Superior Township, Michigan. Governed by a seven-member elected Board of Trustees, YDL is a busy public library serving a population of approximately 83,000 residents. With a $3.8 million budget, the library circulated 822,000 items and hosted nearly 40,000 programs in 2014. Library staff (46 FTEs) provides high level service through a multi-branch system (an award-winning main branch of 60,000 square feet, a former Carnegie Post Office downtown branch of 11,000 square feet, a satellite township branch of 1,100 square feet, and a bookmobile). A portion of the library staff is represented by the AFSCME union. As an autonomous governmental unit, the Library receives funding from operating millages voted in perpetuity. The Library is also supported by active development efforts, grants, the Friends of YDL, and the Ypsilanti District Library Endowment Fund. Ypsilanti is an ethnically and economically diverse community with a long history of support for the Library. A loyal patron recently referred to YDL's Whittaker Road facility as "a jewel in Ypsilanti's crown." Ypsilanti, MI is recognized for its commitment to entrepreneurship, sustainability, local history, and cultural activities. Ypsilanti is home to Eastern Michigan University. The Baldwin Public Library in Birmingham, Michigan is pleased to host 2015 Michigan Notable Author, Sean Madigan Hoen, this Sunday, May 17th at 2:00 p.m. Hoen's acclaimed debut memoir, *Songs Only You Know*, chronicles the author's life in the mid-90s, when he was hiding his involvement in Detroit's hardcore punk scene from his family - while his father was hiding an addiction to crack cocaine.
