Registration for May 1 CE Course

If you have not had a chance to register for this class-please do today! Heather Holmes will be teaching the class "Research for Hospital Librarians" at WSU's Shiffman Medical Library on Friday, May 1, 2015. She will also be teaching this class at the MLA conference in Austin, so now is the perfect time to take the class for a much lower rate! Hospital libraries are being forced to change their focus and end goals to align with the changing face of healthcare. Demonstrating value in hospital libraries now means proving the library saves the institution money rather than more traditional metrics. This course will help hospital librarians gain a better understanding of what types of research they can do to help prove value, whether it be formal research or quality initiatives/applied research. Formal research methods will be covered, including the IRB process, but to a lesser extent than applied research. At the end of this class participants should have a better understanding of how to approach and complete projects, particularly applied research projects, which is generally a more feasible option for hospital librarians. Star Wars Day

Hello all! I'm planning our Star Wars day and I'm looking for inexpensive ways to provide "lightsabers" for the kids who attend. I've seen the pool noodle idea and that's a possibility, but I'm wondering if anyone has any other ideas? I'm also looking for a Darth Vader costume, or someone to come as Darth Vader... please let me know if you have any leads on this. trouble patrons?

Hello everyone, We've got some amazing programs running at our library, but we've run into some problems recently. Our patron, K, has been an important participant in many of our programs, and was one of few patrons that have been with us from the start of many of them. K's personality can be loud, and at times aggressive and/or confrontational. K is always wanting to play the 'devil's advocate' in discussions, and can come off as disrespectful to the feelings/ideas of others. It can turn many discussions into fights. We've attempted to increase the number of staff at programs so that we can redirect discussions and keep the programs on topic, but it feels useless. We are losing many prospective members that join us for an event, but then do not return, largely due to being made to feel uncomfortable. We are also uncomfortable inviting speakers to come to the library because of this particular issue. So I am tapping the collective awesome that is michlib-l to see what suggestions you all can share with us. Many thanks!
