The focus of these meetings will be projects and issues that face anyone with the responsibility of IT in their library. The goal is to get together regularly, share our own projects, ask questions, and learn from others in similar IT-type situations. This is the event created by IT people for IT people. Superiorland Co-op new director

I have been given the happy task of announcing Superiorland Co-op's new director. The Board interviewed four outstanding candidates. Pam Christensen's achievements over a 30+ career in our profession, her network of peers across the state, her work with legislators, and her long-time commitment to multi-type cooperation among libraries of diverse size gave Pam the edge. Plus, as one library director put it, she is fearless and has a great sense of humor! Library directors who served on the Search Committee and attended the interviews congratulated the Board on conducting an open and transparent process. The Cooperative staff is very pleased with the outcome and looking forward to new challenges. Pam's first day on the job will be December 14th. Personal thanks to Marianne Hartzell for her invaluable help with finding a new director. Redford Township District Library Announces New Director

The Board of Trustees of the Redford Township District Library is pleased to announce the selection of Garrett Hungerford as the new director of the library. Hungerford comes to Redford from the Salem-South Lyon District Library, where he served as the assistant director. He will begin his new position on Tuesday, December 1, 2015. Hungerford has 16 years of library experience. He replaces Lisa Hoenig who left this position at the end of August to become the new director of the Ypsilanti District Library. Thanks for the reminder Elisabeth and Rebekah that I obviously missed this post and exchange; oophs! Thanks all though, for indulging me on replying directly to me again! I just think that this is a great idea--low tech and low cost for libraries. I did get a reply from a co-worker of mine who mentioned that many of the adult coloring books are just too busy, and in fact, I know what she means. You really can't use crayons at all, just pencils and I like to use both! Let's make the world a more colorful and calm place! They're simply going to be used for the program.” “We gave those away as door prizes at one of our last events and they were such a big hit. Personally, based on your question, it might be problematic, but you could put a label in the book to suggest that if people need to color they should copy the page rather than color in the book.” “We do not, because I don't know how we would keep people from coloring in them.” “I have several coloring books of my own and find them a very relaxing pastime. I do not have them in the library collection. They are meant to be colored in otherwise why have them? Although I suppose patrons could copy pictures that they wanted to do. It could also be a fun thing to put on an activity table. We have one where we always have a jigsaw puzzle or a scrabble game always going. If you are getting a lot of requests for them maybe you could try a couple and see how it goes. It seems several libraries have had success using coloring books as passive programming: leaving the coloring books and colored pencils on tables to be used in-house.” “Rather than checking out coloring books, we made coloring kits that patrons can check out in-house. They can select from an assortment of pages that we copied out of coloring books, and we provide colored pencils and a pencil sharpener. Similarly, we have a Zentangle kit that includes a Zentangle book, tiles, and micron pens. We provide coloring pages for children as well. Each child receives a box with 4 crayons that she can keep.” “We have a coloring club that meets once a month. We provide the copies and colored pencils. Just wanted to remind you all that the deadline to apply for Public Library Association awards and grants is fast approaching. In particular, I want to call your attention to the DEMCO PLA New Leaders Travel Grant (http://www.ala.org/pla/awards/demconewleadersgrant) which awards recipients up to $1,500 to attend a PLA continuing education opportunity--just in time to attend PLA in Denver or ALA in Orlando! Greetings, If your institution has a library facility called an Information Commons, Knowledge Commons, Learning Commons, Makerspace, or some similar name, we invite you to complete a survey describing your facility for inclusion in an upcoming book entitled A Field Guide to the Information Commons (Second Edition), which will be published by Scarecrow Press and authored by myself and Charles Forrest of Emory University. The entries in this book will provide a snapshot of the current state of development in academic and research libraries of the information commons, a response to the pressures of a rapidly changing research and learning environment characterized by acquiring and making accessible a host of new online information resources, developing innovative collaborative services, and transforming spaces to support changing user behaviors and patterns of learning. Descriptive entries will include both text and images portraying facilities in several dozen libraries across North America and beyond. If you are interested in submitting an entry to the book, please fill out the survey information at the following link.
