He will be talking about "what happens when we get it right" and would love to hear your success stories with getting broadband service to the library and what difference it has made. If you benefitted from a collaborative community project which got you to broadband speeds, or if you did it on your own, we still want to hear what you did, why you did it, and if it made a difference. The attached message tells more about the hearing and this link has further information, and this link takes you to further IMLS information: http://www.imls.gov/about/broadband.aspx?id=9&category=6&pg=2 According to Eric: "I've emailed a few libraries that we've worked with through our community planning efforts. My ask of them is a bit vague. The panel I'm on is titled, "what's working" and is aimed at sharing successes. The overall theme is that broadband is critical for libraries and funding for high speed networks is critical. So I want to hear about libraries who have seen a big increase in need for bandwidth or faster connections because of community demand, classes and offerings to increase digital literacy, partnering with schools who have 1 to 1 device programs but not all the students have broadband at home so they come to the library, etc. It's a vague and open ended request but if you could send out a short paragraph to the listserv asking for stories and successes in no more than two paragraphs, there's a good chance they'll end up in my statement." Upcoming Genealogy events at the Pinckney Library

Dear library colleagues, we invite you, your colleagues, and community members to attend the second of the Pinckney Community Public Library's 4-part genealogy workshop series entitled: "A Bridge to the Past". (This workshop series is sponsored by the Friends of the Pinckney Library.) The series is once-a-month on Saturday at 10:30 am. Refreshments will be served. We ask that attendees call the library in advance to register so that we have a good count for the handouts that will be shared during each workshop. This Saturday, April 4th's session topic is: "USING THE GENEALOGYBANK DATABASE" -- Find out how you can use the library's newest database subscription to search historical newspapers. You'll never know what you'll find -- births, deaths, marriages, criminal activity! Newspapers are one of the best places to research family events and fill in the details of your ancestors' lives. Note: The Pinckney Library does not restrict by residency. All attendees for this Saturday's workshop will be given remote access to the library's subscription to the GenealogyBank database. Upcoming session topics are as follows: * Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 10:30am--WHAT ARE GENEALOGY WEBINARS?: Researching your family history means you'll probably be exploring areas of the country or world you weren't expecting. Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Spring 2014 Grants

This announcement is being sent to several lists. Please excuse any duplication. The Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society is pleased to announce that the following two (2) grants are available: the Mary J. Ritter Literacy Award, and the James C. Dance Award for the Performing Arts. Information about these grants is below. The grants will be presented at the Spring 2014 Book & Author Luncheon on Monday, May 19, 2014, at Burton Manor in Livonia. The winners will receive two (2) free tickets to the Spring 2014 luncheon and must be present to receive the grant. Grant winners are required to submit a 22'' x 28" project report poster showing how the grant was used to be displayed at the Fall 2014 luncheon. Application forms with instructions and reporting requirements are attached. Applications are due on Wednesday, April 30, 2014. Completed applications should be sent by either email or U.S. mail to the address listed on the application forms. 1. Mary J. Ritter Literacy Award: $1000. This grant is awarded to assist in supporting a library or organization that promotes literacy. Libraries and literacy organizations in the metropolitan-Detroit area are eligible to apply. The award honors the late Mary J. Ritter, a past president of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Board and an unwavering supporter of the society for forty years. Mrs. Ritter was a founder of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society and an organizer of the first Book & Author Luncheon in 1972. 2. James C. Dance Award for the Performing Arts: $1000. This grant is given to improve a library's performing arts collection, or to establish and/or expand a program that advances or celebrates any of the performing arts. Public and academic libraries in the metropolitan-Detroit area are eligible to apply. The award honors the late James C. Dance, a founder of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society and its Master of Ceremonies for 19 luncheons. Mr. Dance retired from the Detroit Public Library as Public Relations Coordinator.
