Participates in budget preparation by submitting planned expenditures for youth services department for the coming fiscal year, and monitors and maintains budgetary guidelines during the year. Compiles library activity reports and statistics relating to youth services and submits as directed. Assumes responsibility for resolving problem areas within Youth Services Department and keeps supervisor apprised of action taken. Makes recommendations for improvement or changes with regard to library policies and operations. Interviews, hires and supervises all positions in the Youth Services Department. Provides training to all persons who report directly to the position and plans a professional development program for each staff member. Plans, coordinates and implements all in-service training for youth services department staff. Responsible for evaluations and necessary counseling of all staff members of the Youth Services Department who report directly to position. Plans and coordinates all PWPL educational programming that relates to the Youth Services Department conducted for staff, community, special interest groups and patrons. Fourth Annual Community Reads Book Selection by the Neighborhood Library Association

The Neighborhood Library Association (NLA), a group of five neighboring libraries, is pleased to announce their fourth annual Community Reads book. Detroit City Is the Place to Be: The Afterlife of an American Metropolis by Mark Binelli, is a compelling biography of a city as well as a profound commentary on postindustrial America. Each of the five libraries will host book discussions and related programs. The Community Reads program begins today and runs through November 14, culminating with a visit by Mark Binelli at Novi Public Library on Thursday, November 14. The participating libraries are: Lyon Township Public Library, Northville District Library, Novi Public Library, Salem-South Lyon District Library and Wixom Public Library. Mark Binelli's book is a nuanced portrait of a once-great American industrial city that fell into decay decades ago, but which recently is experiencing a ray of hope despite the current financial situation. Binelli provides an easily-read 300 year tour through Detroit, from Henry Ford's auto and steel boom and the race riots of the 1960s, to the current resurgence led by enterprising idealists, urban farmers and do-it-yourself go-getters. Programs include: Detroit Underworld Diary at Salem-South Lyon District Library on Sept. 4; the History of Fred Sanders' Confectionary at Novi Public Library on Sept. 26; A Current Look at the Pre-Depression Architecture of Detroit at Salem-South Lyon District Library on Oct. 3; Detroit's Historical Woodmere Cemetery at Lyon Township Public Library on Oct. 8; Detroit: Where We've Been & Where We Are Headed presented by Jack Lessenberry at Northville District Library on Oct. 15; and Unique Street Names of Detroit at Wixom Public Library on Oct. 23.
