Re-creating Eloise with D.E. Johnson: Tues., 7/23 at 7 p.m.

The Westland Public Library is proud to welcome award-winning author D.E. Johnson on Tuesday, July 23rd from 7-8 p.m. Mr. Johnson will share the history from his most recent historical mystery, Detroit Breakdown, a book set on the grounds of the former Eloise Hospital. The hospital is a place of legend and myth, and was an important part of the lives of many people in the Westland and greater Detroit area. Johnson will discuss Eloise as it was in the early 1900s as well as the changes in the institution through the Great Depression. He has other tricks up his sleeve as well, with many interesting tidbits from Detroit-area history. Johnson is the author of three Detroit-based historical mysteries: The Detroit Electric Scheme, set in the early electric car industry and winner of a Michigan Notable Book Award; Motor City Shakedown, which explores the first mob war in Detroit history and is also a winner of the Michigan Notable Book Award; and his newest, Detroit Breakdown, which is largely set at Eloise Hospital and looks at mental health treatment in the early 20th Century. Classic Microfilm Machine

Hello All, VBDL has a classic microfilm machine available for adoption - free to a good home. It is an old, carrel-type Indus machine which was in very good working order the last time I used it. It's simple reel to reel mechanism is actually easier and more reliable than some of the newer models. However, the footprint is large. The machine requires some space. Michigan Breakfast at FGS update

Dear Librarians, The Michigan Breakfast at the Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference (FGS) is in 40 days and is almost half sold out! Meet and reunite with other researchers seeking Midwestern roots at the final morning of FGS! The Michigan Genealogical Council is proud to be a part of this year's FGS Conference in Fort Wayne, Indiana. We are sponsoring a breakfast on the final morning, August 24, of the conference on the main floor of the Allen County Public Library. This buffet breakfast begins at 6:45 a.m. and will finish in time for attendees to arrive in time for their first session Saturday morning in the Grand Wayne Convention Center across the street. The cost of the breakfast is $15 with all profits going to the War of 1812 Preserve the Pensions Project. There will be two brief presentations, the first about the status of researching in the Great Lakes State and the status of the Preserve the Pensions Project. Please forward to anyone that you believe would be interested in attending this program! *********************************************************** Both natural and human generated disasters regularly plague our libraries. Mitigating damage is an ongoing process of preparation. Explore strategies for success and learn practical hands-on techniques in disaster management with internationally recognized expert Jeanne Drewes for a two, non-consecutive, day program on September 10, and November 8, 2013. Drewes serves as Chief of Binding and Collections Care at the Library of Congress. On September 10, participants will tour the host facility (Delta Township District Library in Lansing, Michigan) with Drewes as tour guide, identifying strengths, weaknesses and opportunities to better prepare against disaster. A workshop will follow with participants engaging in hands-on recovery techniques. The day will conclude with an informational session on developing a disaster plan. Between September 10 and next session participants will work on their plans. On November 8, the group will reconvene to discuss, ask questions and finalize their individual plans under the tutelage of Drewes. In addition, property insurance will be addressed. Strengthening institutional buy-in, two participants from each organization are strongly encouraged. The same two individuals are not necessary for both sessions. PA 164, library fund, vouchers

Hi, Several issues arose recently that led our mayor to examine our city ordinance governing the library and then PA 164. He found several discrepancies and those are about to be addressed so that our library will be in compliance with PA 164. I understand that PA 164 requires "...all moneys received for such library shall be deposited in the treasury of said city to the credit of the library fund..." and "drawn upon...upon the properly authenticated vouchers of the library board." Currently, the city allocates funds from the general fund to cover the library's wage-related and utility expenses. They write our paychecks and pay the utility bills directly. The library has its own checking account, and penal fines, state aid, grants, donations, memorial gifts, "desk receipts" for copies and faxes and such, are deposited into the checking account. Most regular operating expenses (books, magazines, supplies, etc.) are paid from that. I write (using QuickBooks) and sign those checks which are also signed by the treasurer or another board member. I'm wondering if there are any other PA 164 libraries that operate like we currently do with a separate checking account, and if there is any justification under PA 164 for doing so. More questions: For those of you who use vouchers, would you mind sending a sample? How do you keep track of your spending? I find it so handy to run quick reports in QuickBooks so I know if I'm within budget and it's so easy to search for other information about past vendors and such. How do you quickly access that sort of information? Does your board have a treasurer? If so, what does the treasurer do? Who balances your checkbook? Thank you for any information you can provide.
