Public Library and local school partnership helping parents gain technology skills

Arlington Heights Memorial Library in Illinois, (AHML), http://ahml.info/ provides a great example of a school/library partnership in the area of digital literacy. Staff members are working to collaborate with their elementary and junior high schools to offer a series of classes geared to the parents of students. The classes will provide training in areas of digital literacy and will be offered over a three month period using both the public library and school computer labs. Their goal is to give parents struggling to keep up with their digital savvy youngsters the chance to learn more about technology. Date Correction ----- Forwarded Message ----- DALNET Educational Forum Friday, August 9, 9:30-Noon, Lunch Available Following Keynote from 12-1PM At Wayne State University, Undergraduate Library, Bernath Auditorium The Network Rebalances the Library: Patterns and Questions This presentation will look at a series of patterns and questions that are emerging as library organizations and services continue to be rebalanced by the impact of the network. The focus will be less on technology per se , and more on how broader network and digital shifts are affecting research, learning and engagement, and how those changes in turn make libraries think differently about how they organize, where they make investments, and what services are important. The presentation will look at such things as changing patterns of user engagement, collections focus, system provision, and skills. It will conclude by suggesting three broad patterns: a shift to engagement by better understanding and getting into workflows ; rightscaling infrastructure as collections and systems are sourced collaboratively and/or in the cloud; and how innovation and learning happens through institutional change. Lorcan Dempsey, Vice President, OCLC Research and Chief Strategist Keynote speaker Lorcan oversees OCLC Research and participates in strategic planning at OCLC. He is a librarian who began his career in public libraries in his native Dublin, Ireland. He joined OCLC in 2001 as Vice President, Research and was named Chief Strategist in 2004. Before moving to OCLC, Lorcan headed up national information services in the UK with JISC . Before that, he directed UKOLN , a national U.K. research and policy unit at the University of Bath. He is currently a member of the Cambridge University Library Visiting Committee and a member of the Advisory Board for the Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information ( CISTI ). In 2010 he received the National Federation of Advanced Information Services' ( NFAIS ) highest award, The Miles Conrad Award. Contact information online here . Library Directors, Time to get the ball rolling with the ExpressSOS CONNECT partnership! As promised, we are keeping things simple. Attached are two brief messages you can share with the public through any or all of your established communication channels (newsletter, website, social media, etc.). * The first attachment is an informational piece on our new partnership, should you wish to introduce it to your patrons. * The second is a critical election alert that we urge you to share between now and Election Day (Aug. 6). I have also attached an accompanying flyer about the election that can be printed and posted in your library, if you choose to do so. Participation in this partnership is, of course, optional though I will always label priority messages as critical to underscore our hope that all libraries will share those particular items with patrons. Beautiful afternoon all, We are taking a look at interfiling our adult Mystery, SciFI and Fantasy in the entire fiction collection by author. I would be interested in hearing: - experiences, thoughts, positives/negatives with this by any library that has or is considering doing this? - what kind of feedback did you get from your patrons, both before the process and after? - what tips/suggestions do you have for doing the move effectively and timely? question about a good reference book for building a website with Wordpress

Can anyone recommend a good reference book for building a website with Wordpress? I am considering changing our static HTML site (built with an aging Dreamweaver) to a Wordpress site, using a purchased theme. I've worked with Wordpress sites that were established by a designer, but have never built a site myself from scratch using Wordpress.
