The Library of Michigan is announcing the 2017 Letters about Literature<http://www.read.gov/letters/> program. We are the Michigan host for this national program from the Library of Congress. It is a reading-writing contest that invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to write letters to authors of books that have changed their lives. This program gives students the opportunity to reflect deeply on a book. As readers, they come to understand how literature is more than assignment, but also a life changing experience. Children and teens can participate on their own or as part of a library or class project. The 2017 letters will be due in two waves. Level III entries (grades 9-12) have a deadline of December 2, 2016, and Level I and II entries (grades 4-6 and 7-8) have a deadline of January 9, 2017. The state and national winners will be announced in May 2017. Baker & Taylor price changes

Hi! Been pondering this question and wondered if everyone else has had the same response from Baker & Taylor in response to their price changes between the time of ordering and the time of receiving: For example, often, when ordering something through their TS360 site - they list the price, but when it actually comes - the price is higher. Most times it is not that significant, but it adds up. Today I had two that were actually each $5 higher than their advertised price. When I asked a few months ago, I was told that the prices that I see listed in their online catalog were not set in stone - and that they reserve the right to raise the price. The only way around this is to do this: Each time you want to order books, build your cart, but, instead of ordering right then and there, ask for a quote to be sent to you. This quote is good for 30 days and the prices listed in the quote will be honored. This just seems like a ploy to get you to NOT ask for a quote - because who has time to wait for that? And, in this day and age, don't you think they could get their prices changed on their website quickly. Or, do they wait until an order is placed - then go find the current price? Regardless, I don't think this is a good business practice. I make ordering decisions based on the prices that I see at that time - and it seems like false advertising to change it. Maybe it is in their fine print - but the website doesn't clearly state that the price is subject to change. Has anyone successfully asked for refunds? Thanks! FOIA Requests

Hi, Has anyone gotten what I call a nuisance FOIA request? A local resident sent a letter wanting our statistics for 5 years, including number of people using the library, number of cards issued, computer usage, budget and income/expense statements, and my salary. We put links to the Annual State Aid Reports on our website and I referred her to those, as allowed by FOIA. She now wants everything by the month. I explained I would have to charge her to do the work to compile those monthly numbers, and she said she doesn't care. Based on other things she and her little band who don't think Elk Rapids needs a library are doing I'm sure this is just to make things difficult. Paper Order Lists Now Electronic Collection Development Lists: End Of Old Era, Beginning Of New Epoch at TLN!

All, You may remember last September's "big news" from OCLC, concerning their sunset of printed catalog cards effective October 1, 2015. Today I am pleased to announce a similar and certainly no less significant (to us anyway) end of one era, and the transition into a new epoch, at TLN, that being the cessation of the printing of our paper order lists, or as we have referred to them in TLN/WOLF circles for as long as I've worked here, "the list." TLN has offered its librarian prepared, monthly, electronic collection development lists, including the printed lists, as a menu service to its member libraries (and some SLC libraries, too) for a number of years. The electronic service continues to the present day, and will do so into the future. Going much further back in history, at least to the mid-1960's and perhaps even earlier, TLN and its predecessor organizations Wayne Oakland Library Federation, Wayne County Federated Library System, and Wayne County Library made available printed copies of its order lists (the adult list was produced every three weeks and the juvenile and young adult lists every six weeks in those years) to member libraries, as well as under contract to Suburban Library Cooperative and its predecessor organizations, Library Cooperative of Macomb and Macomb County Library. We pledged to continue the paper order list service alongside the electronic version until all libraries made the decision to switch to the electronic edition. That transition has now taken place, and hence effective October 1, 2016 the printed paper order lists will be no more. Long live the electronic collection development lists! So at TLN (and SLC), effective October 1, 2016, out with the paper order lists and in with the exclusively electronic collection development lists! New Library Job Hunt Website Set Up By Michigan Library Grad

Hi Everyone! I'm an alum of UM's School of Information (class of 2010) who has been trying to break back into the library world after far far too much time in sales. There have been some decent library and information science job aggregators out there, but nothing that has quite had the functionality I've been looking for in my own search. The goal is to be a volunteer-driven database of library job postings. Includes removing unruly or disruptive patrons from the library, and when necessary, seeking police intervention for refusal to comply, or for violations of the law. * Composes detailed, clear and concise incident reports; obtains case numbers in the event of police involvement. Accurately logs, uploads and/or updates incident reports according to established procedures. * Possesses a complete understanding of security hardware/software and has the ability to capture images in accordance with established policies and procedures. * Compiles, maintains, reviews and/or interprets statistical data; prepares reports as requested by the Director or Department Head. * Facilitates effective building access/key control including annual audit of staff access levels. * Provides an overview of security procedures to newly hired staff and occasional reviews to existing staff. * Ensures final building security after library closing (checks doors, clears the building and sets alarm). * Liaison to evening janitorial service. Performs spot checks of premises to ensure cleanliness and reports/resolves deficiencies with crew leader. Reports unresolved concerns to Department Head. * Maintains an inventory of janitorial supplies within assigned budget. * Stays informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, SharePoint, library newsletter and blog. Contributes content as appropriate. * Accepts special assignments or duties in support of the library's goals and objectives. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Facilitates set-up/take-down of meeting rooms for various in-house and public programs; maintains flexibility in work schedule to accommodate events held outside of normal library hours. * Monitors public restrooms; refills paper products as needed. * Empties trash from exterior of building and picks up trash on the grounds as necessary. * Shovels light snow and spreads salt to eliminate unsafe sidewalk conditions; contacts snow contractor when needed. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS * High School diploma or equivalent. * Working knowledge of the most widely-used features of Microsoft Office applications, the internet and common office equipment. * Ability to perform light building maintenance. * Previous public service experience. * Working knowledge of library operations and services, including an understanding of and adherence to fundamental principles of open access to library materials and the privacy rights of patrons. * Ability to maintain confidentiality of private and/or sensitive information. Uses discretion in handling confidential library matters. * Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to deliver tactful and decisive communications regarding policies, procedures and guidelines to an audience not always receptive to the information being communicated. * Ability to work effectively with a diverse public; including children and teenagers. * Ability to work under stressful conditions, exercise good judgment, and act quickly in emergencies. * Ability to multi-task, establish priorities, and remain organized in a changing environment. * Punctuality and dependability. * Consistent display of public service attitude that reflects the library's values. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * One year of public service experience. * Prior public library experience. * Prior experience with youth and teens. * Familiarity with SharePoint and Avigilon Security Software. * Current CPR certification. Join us for the Alpena Book Festival!

The 2016 Alpena Book Festival will take place Saturday, September 24^th from 10:00 am-7:00 pm in downtown Alpena. A full day event, the Festival includes panel discussions, author talks, meet and greets, and educational sessions for aspiring writers. Over 25 authors have committed their participation in this year’s Festival, spanning genres that include: inspirational writing, poetry, young adult, science fiction, literary fiction, mystery, Michigan based fiction and non-fiction, and graphic novelists. In what is a truly cooperative endeavor, the staff and volunteers from the Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library, Blue Phoenix Books, Bob’s Bullpen, and Olivet Book and Gift are bringing together authors, illustrators, poets, and readers of all ages to the shores of Thunder Bay for a celebration of literacy and Michigan literary contributions. The festival has activities for all age groups, Ambassador Member of the Alpena Girl Scouts, Bailey Becker, is facilitating a children’s reading and writing activity for ages 3 and up and Children’s Librarian, Mary Clute, will be hosting a craft program at the library. While the event is free and open to the public, attendees may purchase a festival tote bag for a nominal fee, the proceeds of which benefit the READ adult literacy program at the Library. Each bag has a selection of Advanced Reader’s Copies provided by various publishers as well as a few convenience items, peppermints, pens, and bookmarks. Downtown Alpena businesses including Art in the Loft, As You Wish Bakery, Cabin Creek Coffee, Thunder Bay Winery and The Fresh Palate have generously donated their space to provide unique and fun settings for Festival activities. Cataloging for new Harry Potter "book"

Seeking advice from the collective... We just received the new Harry Potter "book." I put it in quotes because it is a script, not a story in the more traditional sense. My inclination is to put it in the ADULT FICTION collection, although since it is a script, it could also go into non-fiction (822). There are only a couple of other libraries in MeL who have it, and they're split about 50/50. I appreciate any thoughts / suggestions. Thanks in advance. The Michigan Department of Attorney General prints their biennial reports every two years. Due to inventory numbers there are reports starting with 1933-34 to 2013-14 which are available to libraries at no cost. Policy Request - Fund Balance

Hi, Everyone! Our library is considering a policy regarding our fund balance. I found a suggestion by the Government Finance Officers Association that governments should establish a formal policy that governs the level of fund balance as well as guidelines for increasing and decreasing the unrestricted fund balance. While we are not a government, we are under scrutiny by our County Board and think that having a set of guidelines in place may help us defend an increase or decrease of our fund balance. If you have a policy for your library or know that your municipality has one, I would certainly appreciate any examples that we can use to help shape one of our own. Thank you in advance, Megan

*Job Description* The Young Adult Services Coordinator has responsibility for planning and presenting activities for young adults—ages 13-19. *Job Objective* This position is primarily responsible for planning, directing, evaluating, scheduling, and coordinating young adult programs (ages 13-19). This position requires the development of recommendations for programs, policies, and procedures to improve young adult library services. The ideal candidate will create an environment where teens may engage more in the services of the library, where they feel accepted and motivated in pursing intellectual and recreational opportunities. There is collaboration with the Children’s Services Coordinator to include children’s programs, particularly in regard to the Summer Reading Program. *Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities* - Ability to develop, schedule, and perform programs for young adults. - Knowledge of young adult literature. - Ability to read professional journals to increase knowledge of issues and resources to help with future plans for the division. - Ability to stays current with community needs, programs and issues. - Knowledge of the general principles and specific details of adolescent development. - Knowledge and sense of the community’s needs and desires for young adult library services. - Knowledge of developmental, recreational and educational needs of young adults. - Ability to work with MS Office to produce marketing materials for programming. - Knowledge in social media to engage teens and promote programs. - Ability to create meaningful relationships with community organizations and schools that serve young adults in order to facilitate services that meet the needs of the young adults. - Knowledge of the principles and issues/policies of intellectual freedom and the ability to apply that knowledge in a library setting. - Skill and ability to effectively listen, ask and answer questions; communicate with adults and children; effectively interact with staff; effectively read, write and speak; effectively organize and give presentations to groups of listeners, including storytelling, read aloud, drama and puppetry; prepare press releases and monthly reports; and prepare written materials for programs, flyers, tickets, and game boards. - Requires a genuine liking and understanding of children of all ages; enthusiasm, optimism, resourcefulness, flexibility and creativity; excellent interpersonal skills. - Serves as supervisor for subordinate employees assigned to the division. Responsible for the daily supervision of assigned employees. - Skill in problem solving skills. - Ability to think logically. - Ability and knowledge to assist and instruct patrons in the use of library materials, including online databases, Internet sources, and the online catalog. - Comfortable working with diverse age groups and populations. - Friendly with people who use the library, both patrons coming through the front door and staff. - Ability to communicate well with colleagues and the general public. - Ability to analyze and creatively solve problems related to the position. - Ability to work with enthusiasm and initiative. - Ability to assume more difficult duties as experience increases; other duties as assigned. - Ability to plan, organize, and implement BDL's Summer Reading program in coordination with the Children’s Services Coordinator. *Physical Requirements* Must be able sit for extended periods of time. Must be able to operate assigned equipment, including computers. *Education, Experience, and Training* Preferred: Master’s degree in Library Science from an accredited American Library Association university and two (2) years’ professional library experience as a librarian in a public library. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. *Reports to* Library Director *Hours Required* This is a permanent part time position for 26 hours per week. The work schedule includes some nights and weekends. Coordination with Children’s Services Coordinator of coverage of all programs in Kids' Place is required. *Benefits* Sick time accrued after a 90-day probationary period. In the morning session, all participants will have the opportunity to learn how to use & implement programming on MaKey MaKey and littleBits. Each participant will be given one MaKey MaKey and one littleBits kit to take back to their library for programming use and/or circulation to the public ($200 value!). The afternoon will offer two breakout sessions. The first being for children's staff: an interactive Inclusive storytime session with hands-on activities and implementation ideas with Bloomfield Township Public Library's Jen Taggart and Michigan Braille & Talking Book Library's Stephanie Wambaugh (Bridgid Turner from LARA will be speaking on behalf of Stephanie at our Marquette workshop). The second afternoon breakout is for staff working with Teens & Tweens: a Portable MakerSpace Kit session, where ideas and tips for fun, easy-to-do, "on the go" STEM programming will be shared and hands-on demos of various equipment. $25 registration, lunch provided. Write Michigan Short Story Contest

Hello Everyone! We are delighted to announce the 5th Annual Write Michigan Short Story Contest! It is super exciting this year to share that we are including a Spanish Language category for stories! Please share this information with teachers, patrons and/or any writing groups who meet at your library or in your community!
