Naturopathic medicine/healthy lifestyle community presentations

We are getting a number of requests from community members wanting to partner with my libraries to give community presentations regarding naturopathic medicine. I’m all for learning more about making healthy choices, however, this makes me feel a little uncomfortable. We have partnered with our local hospital on these types of community presentations, but since it is the hospital, I don’t have the same concerns. I’m curious if other libraries have also been approached by natural medicine people? If you did partner with them do you require some type of legal disclaimer? (Liking checking with your doctor before making medical decisions)? I’m feeling like this is not something I want to get involved in but I’m curious to hear from others who have faced this same issue. Thanks in advance for your input. Sheila Sheila M. Procedure for active assault

Hi All, Does anyone have a procedure for an active assault that you would be willing to share? I am particularly interested in libraries that do not have a security person in the building and/or those that are a distance from the nearest law enforcement agency. We had a Board member suggest that perhaps the library desk should stock pepper spray for emergencies (such as a person who enters the building and starts attacking patrons). It was suggested I find out what other libraries are doing to train their staff and protect patrons in the event of an active assault of any kind. We do have a Policy for patron behavior, but it assumes that staff will be able to approach the patron and ask them to leave and/or issue a verbal warning that they will be calling the police. In the question above, we are assuming that reasoning with the person is not an option and response time may be long. Thank you! Megan

Hoarding presentation

Just a quick recommendation for a program. We had Terence Shulman do a presentation on hoarding last week that brought in 80 people. Terence runs the Shulman Center for Comulsive Theft, Spending and Hoarding (theshulmancenter.com) and has published several books on those topics. He was a funny and empathetic speaker and our patrons really enjoyed his talk. Thanks to Northville for the recommendation! Job Summary: The Patmos library director, under the direction of the library board, is responsible for the daily operation as well as the daily management of the library. This festival runs January 28th through the month of February and brings in artists from all over the county. This year as part of our kick-off event we want to encourage artists from around Michigan to show their art forms and give them the opportunity to sell their artwork if wanted. If you could please help me raise awareness of this opportunity for artists in Michigan it would be greatly appreciated. Larry Martin's WWII In Their Own Words

Jackson District Library was pleased to host Larry Martin and guest Sigrid Burkhardt Howard who was born in Berlin, Germany in 1927. She was by her own words "brainwashed" into thinking Hitler was a god as a member of the Hitler Youth and believed everything he said. She was "de-Nazifide" after the war and later married an American soldier. The program drew a huge crowd and the audience was enthralled by the talk and !&A. On October 1, Larry invites Don Mericle, a United States Navy Gunner's Mate aboard the USS Cofer APD-62. He will talk about his assignment on the Destroyer escort; invasions; and rescues during his enlistment. Martin will also have a collection of World War II memorabilia on display. This presentation is free and open to the public. Mr. Martin has presented a 4-part series at Jackson District Library for the past 10 years bringing over 4,000 people to see and hear about personal experiences from Veterans who served in WWII and how the war had affected citizens from different walks of life. Hello. The Secretary of State's office now houses a tool that can help parents protect children and teens when they are on their electronic devices. We are hoping libraries will consider sharing the article below with your patrons via library websites and newsletters. Attached is the logo and a photo if you'd like to include them. Much thanks! Parents have new tool to protect children and teens With cell phones and the Internet, today's kids have an easy connection to the outside world. It's like a huge playground without a fence and that makes protecting kids so much harder. The reality of the digital world is that children and teens are regularly inundated with electronic advertisements promoting alcohol, tobacco, pornography and gambling. The companies behind these ads are increasingly using text messaging as their marketing strategy of choice, though they often don't know the age of the recipients. Thankfully, parents now have some help to stop these ads. The Michigan Child Protection Registry offered through the Michigan Secretary of State's office is a free service that blocks adult ads from reaching emails, mobile phones and Instant Messenger IDs belonging to children and teens. Similar to the federal Do Not Call List, the Michigan Child Protection Registry is a free do-not-contact service for Michigan residents. The International Collections Librarians' Roundtable (ICLR) will be meeting next month at the Caroline Kennedy Library in Dearborn Heights. The ICLR is a grass-roots, non-partisan group of Michigan librarians interested in developing international language, ESL, and literacy collections. At the meeting librarians will have the opportunity to network, discuss new programming efforts, evaluate vendors or materials and share resources. Fletcher Public Library has chosen William Kamkwamba’s The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind as this year’s Alpena Reads book. Tickets for William Kamkwamba’s Alpena Reads author talk are now on sale at the Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.alpenalibrary.org or by calling 989-356-6188, ext. 10. Tickets are $10 each. William’s true-life story is amazing. In 2000, when he was thirteen years old, famine struck his home country of Malawi. His family went hungry and lost their livelihood when the crops failed. The following year he was forced to drop out of school because his family could no longer afford his tuition. Fearing a life of ignorance and poverty, the young teen turned to the tiny three-shelf library in his village in search of books he hoped would help him keep up with his friends. In these books, he found his dream: He would build a windmill that would produce power to light his home and irrigate his family’s crops. With insufficient English skills and no teacher, he taught himself the basics of physics and electrical engineering using diagrams in the books. At fourteen, against all odds, he built an electricity-generating windmill that eventually drew the attention of the world. Kamkwamba’s visit will be the culmination of a community-wide read of his book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, a non-fiction account of how famine and hardship in his home country of Malawi inspired Kamkwamba to build a windmill that changed his life and his community. Doing Away With Computer Towers?!

We are in the process of revamping and updating our patron computers. One of the options we are looking at is doing away with the towers and going to a " Session Based Remote Desktop Infrastructure". Basically, it's putting all the computers on a remote server and handling everything from there instead of each individual tower. Has anyone done this, or know anyone who has? We are doing a trial with some borrowed equipment, but I would love real-world knowledge. This day-long, multi-state event will take place both in Lansing, Michigan and Indianapolis, Indiana. Speakers and participants will interact both in-person and remotely. The summit will feature a BIBFRAME overview and update from Beacher Wiggins (Director for Acquisitions and Bibliographic Access, Library of Congress) and a presentation from Linked Data industry leader Zepheira<https://zepheira.com/> on the implications for libraries. This summit is an opportunity for librarians to explore the possibilities of what a fully integrated Linked Data world means for libraries and our communities. This event will also provide updates and presentations exploring what is already happening to make that possibility a reality. We invite program proposals from September 14, 2016 to November 7, 2016. Proposed programs should be either 20 minutes or 45 minutes in length, including time for questions. Proposals should be grounded in experience. They may explore projects, plans, collaborations, data analysis as well as other aspects of Linked Data creation and implementation. ALA Editions announces an exciting free AL Live interactive webcast, Filtering: The Man in the Middle, with Doug Archer, Bob Bocher, Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Jamie LaRue and Michael Robinson. This interactive webcast will last one hour and take place at 2 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016. Thanks to the good work of the ALA's Washington Office and others, there may be far more money available to libraries through the federal E-rate program. To take advantage of that, however, libraries must first adopt an internet safety policy that includes "technology protection measures"-filtering. Detroit Jazz Artist Available for Free Jazz Concerts and Educational Programming at Libraries this Fall

The RJ Spangler Trio has a performance grant that allows us to play free concerts for schools, non-profits, libraries, etc. We have openings in September, October, November & December. Please see a recent video of our lecture in August at Baldwin Public Library exploring the jump and swing jazz of the 40s and 50s: Jazz Lecture Series with RJ Spangler | | | | | | | | | | | Jazz Lecture Series with RJ Spangler | | | | About the program and performers: RJ Spangler speaks about the history of Detroit's jazz & blues roots and performs musical examples with an all-star band. RJ is a graduate of GPS, class of '75! About Larry: Born & raised in Aliquippa, Penn.,near Pittsburgh in 1947, where he got his start playing jazz, showing the ropes to his friend, jazz guitar great George Benson. Smith moved to New York where he played with some big names such as organist Shirley Scott, drummer Joe Chambers and multi-saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk. For years, Smith bounced around from New York to New Jersey to Detroit (where he sunk roots after his mother moved here) and back. Larry had a special relationship with one the all-time great sax players - Sonny Stitt. Sonny knew & encouraged Larry going back to his teenage years, when passing through Pennsylvania. This lead to Larry touring with Sonny as a regular member of his group. Quite an honer for a man that plays the same instrument as the leader! In Detroit he lead his own bands & also played in Detroit jazz master Roy Brooks Artistic Truth band. Larry has a reputation as an old-school keeper of the bebop flame and a killer when it comes to the blues. As Charles Latimer said in the Metro Time "his specialty is ballads. He shuts his eyes, hunches his shoulders, and holds his saxophone like a prom date. The ballads are so touching they'd make the devil cry." Larry appears as a special guest on James Carter's 1996 Conversin' with the Elders & Live at Baker's Keyboard Lounge disc, released in 2004. He has also toured with the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin. Drummer RJ Spangler has appeared on over 60 recordings and has toured the US, Canada & Europe quite a few times. He lectures on Detroit jazz & blues history and beyond his trio, he leads the Planet D Nonet swing band as well as a blues band. His latest release is "This Is What We Do" w/ the RJ Spangler on the Eastlawn label. Guitarist Oliver Nevels is another veteran player whom has recorded & toured nationally with organist Charles Earland, appearing on two of his CDs, including "I Ain't Jivin' I'm Jammin" for the legendary Muse label. He also toured with organist Richard "Groove" Holmes. Bassist Greg Cook is a Detroit main stay, having proven himself playing with the top of Detroit's jazz scene: Geri Allen, Roy Brooks & Marcus Belgrave & many others. He toured Europe with soul great Bettye LeVette and held down the bass chair in Rat Pack show for countless performances.
