Older Wiser Driver Program at Warren Civic Center Library

STEM/STEAM Kits

Good evening - The Novi Public Library recently received a grant and generous donation to create circulating STEM/STEAM kits. Our kits will focus on children in grades K-6th. We would like to know what items other libraries have included in their STEAM kits along with pros or cons for items. We are also interested in hearing about circulation rules (how long is the checkout period, how many kits checked out per card, holds allowed on kits, overdue fines, damaged/missing pieces, etc.). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Provides programs for children and their families, including during the annual children’s summer reading program. Duties include, but are not limited to: planning, presenting, and evaluating programs; networking with community groups; tracking statistics; and preparing supporting materials. • Prepares, presents, and/or assists in weekly story times. • Staffs public services desks as operations require. • Maintain cleanliness and order of Early Literacy Center. • Promotes infant, early literacy, child, and adolescent learning and development in a balanced and comprehensive manner. • Creates bibliographies, user guides, promotional materials, and publicity spotlighting the Youth Services Department’s collections, services, and programs. • Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to adults and children, including face to face interactions and preparation of reading lists. • Creates displays to enhance the library experience and promote the use of library resources. • Contributes to social media platforms and the Early Literacy Newsletter. • Assists in maintaining and developing a collection of youth materials, both print and non-print, which includes selecting items for purchase and withdrawal under the direction of the Head of Youth Services. • Makes suggestions for equipment purchases and maintenance of the department. • Performs other related work as required or assigned by management. JOB REQUIREMENTS: • This job requires a Masters of Library and/or Information Science from an American Library Association accredited library school. • Successful experience working with children. • Professional experience working in public library preferred. • Working knowledge and understanding of basic library principles, procedures, technology, goals, and philosophy of service. • Ability to plan and implement library service goals and evaluate effectiveness of service to our patrons. • Demonstrated capacity to set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines. • Capability to enforce library policies and make sound judgment decisions when necessary. • Competence to read and understand information contained in memoranda, reports, bulletins, and other written forms. • Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact with various library staff and patron in an effective and courteous manner. Effectively communicate in both verbal and written form. • Aptitude to prepare presentations and speak in front of groups. • Capacity to identify networking opportunities and communicate with others in the profession, especially other children’s librarians. • Skill to do basic math without the aid of a calculator and more complex calculations with a calculator. • Capability to write and administer a budget effectively. • Knowledge of technology functions such as email, internet searching, printing, and basic word processing and spreadsheet software. • Willingness to maintain skills in above-mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate professional learning experiences. • Ability to operate a variety of library equipment including a telephone, computer, fax and copy machine, printer, calculator, cash register, audiovisual equipment, library automation systems, software programs, and other equipment as added or required. • Position requires some evening and weekend shift availability. Available: Reference Books, NYT Microfilm, and Atlas Stand

Dear Michlib- We are downsizing our reference collection in advance of a major renovation. We have a large trove of reference items that we are offering to interested libraries free of charge. The vast majority of these items are reference books in very good condition, with subjects spanning the entire Dewey range. Due to the large number of items we are withdrawing we do not have a list to peruse; instead, interested libraries are welcome to come to Baldwin on the following dates/times, browse the shelves, and take any/all of the designated items. Monday, October 10: 9:30am - 8:00pm Tuesday, October 11: 9:30am - 8:00pm Wednesday, October 12: 9:30am - 8:00pm When you arrive to take look at the reference materials, please check in at the reference desk and the librarians there will direct you to the shelving ranges with the free items. In addition to the reference books, we are offering up our collection of the New York Times on microfilm, as well as the cabinets they are stored in. (You must take the microfilm to take the cabinets.) Our NYT microfilm collection spans: 1852 - 1864 1920 - 2009 Finally, we are also offering a used atlas stand, of which there are photos attached. The drawers slide out and are in good working condition. All items are free, for local pickup only, and must be picked up by Wednesday, October 12. Please reply off list with any questions. Grand Opening Smithsonian exhibit

Hi! (and please pardon duplicate emails!) The Grand Opening of the Smithsonian Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America exhibit should be a rollicking good time! Please join us this Sunday at 2 p.m. if you're not attending the Adrian Symphony Orchestra or watching your children or grandchildren play soccer or any number of other things going on this weekend! We'll kick off the event (yes, pun intended) with a Tailgate Party (festivities enhanced by the Morenci High School band and cheerleaders), then go inside for brief welcoming remarks by a few speakers, a short talk by the very entertaining Dr. Thomas Henthorn from UM-Flint, a Coaches and Players chat and then a fun "ribbon cutting" involving the band, cheerleaders and some of the football players. That will be followed by viewing the Smithsonian exhibit, a local exhibit, and wonderful sports-related art created by last year's Morenci High School students under art teacher Kym Ries. You'll be wowed by this exhibit...even if you don't care a whit about sports. I hope you can join us! And, if you can't come Sunday, be sure to visit us later!
