Hoopla Comic Book Club at Detroit Public Library!

If your patrons have access to Hoopla, please spread the word about this hybrid digital comic book club! The first meeting will be next Thursday, September 5 at 6pm! Join us every month in person or online for an animated discussion about comics and graphic novels. This group is open to adults (18+) in Detroit or beyond. This is a digital comic book club, meaning no physical copies will be set aside for attendees. Instead, all titles are available on Hoopla, a free media streaming platform accessible to DPL library card holders, as well as cardholders at many other libraries. Announcing the 2024/2025 LM LSTA Improving Access to Information grant awards!

The Library of Michigan (LM) is pleased to announce twelve Improving Access to Information grants for the 2024/2025 fiscal year. LM received 23 applications from academic and public libraries working to provide further access and services to their students and communities. The awards total $234,265. The Improving Access to Information grant program is intended to help Michigan's public and academic libraries provide improved access to collections in one of three areas: literacy, local history or special collections, and services to community users with limited online access, e.g. improving equity through digital inclusion. Of the twelve grant recipients, one is an academic library and eleven are public libraries. Two libraries received local history or special collections grants, two libraries received digital inclusion grants, and eight libraries received literacy related grants. The project descriptions are listed in the attachment. By viewing onboarding as a process over time and planning with purpose, libraries and other workplaces can create positive experiences that lead to more satisfied staff and higher retention. Happy Wednesday Everyone, The UPRLC Conference is less than a month away in the beautiful Upper Peninsula . Our deadline for registration is Friday, September 16th. We will not be able to accommodate on-site registration. When you register, please make sure you receive an email confirmation. We have had some glitches, so if you do not receive a confirmation, it will not show that you are registered on our end. Fletcher Public Library are thrilled to welcome Michigan Poet Laureate Nandi Comer to Alpena! This special event will feature Nandi reading from a selection of her works followed by a Q&A. About Nandi Comer: Nandi Comer is the Poet Laureate of Michigan. She was raised in Detroit, Michigan. She received a B.A. in English and in Spanish with an emphasis on Latin American Culture from the University of Michigan. She has received fellowships from Cave Canem, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Vermont Studio Center, Callaloo, and a translation fellowship by US Poets in Mexico. Her poems and essays have appeared or are forthcoming in Callaloo, Crab Orchard Review, The Journal of Pan African Studies, Sycamore Review, and Third Coast. She is the author of American Family: Syndrome (Finishing Line Press) and Tapping Out (Northwestern University Press), which was awarded the 2020 Society of Midland Authors Award and the 2020 Julie Suk Award. Her writing received the Vera Myer Strube Award in poetry and she is the winner of Crab Orchard Review’s 2014 Richard Peterson Poetry Prize. In 2016 she completed an M.A. in African American Literature from the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies and an M.F.A. in Poetry from the English Department at Indiana University. She is a 2019 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow. Over the years, Nandi has been dedicated to youth development by serving as a writer-in-residence in Detroit Public Schools and community centers. She has also worked in collaboration with organizations including YArts and InsideOut Literary Arts Projects. She served as a curriculum developer and youth curriculum consultant for various arts organizations and in 2018 she received William Wiggins Award for Outstanding Teaching at Indiana University. In 2013 Comer debuted, “Pedestrians,” a choreo-poem created in collaboration with Indiana University’s African American dance company. She was awarded the 2014 Pioneer Award by the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies in recognition of her commitment to scholarship and production of the arts that explore African American traditions. Her most recent poetry and performance project, Techno Poetics, was an interdisciplinary performance program that used poetry to tell the story of the origins of Techno and contemporary Detroit music. Informed by her experiences growing up in Detroit, Comer writes and performs literary pieces that incorporate the history of the city while also examining race, gender, sexuality, and class. She is currently the co-director of Detroit Lit, a program dedicated to providing reading and professional development opportunities to narrative makers of color in Detroit. Library of Michigan Yearbook Collection Campaign

For several years, the Library of Michigan has actively collected yearbooks from Michigan high schools, colleges/universities, and other post-secondary institutions (e.g., nursing schools, business schools, vocational/technical schools). With the start of the school year, we are expanding the campaign through our social media and other communications tools. There will be several future social media posts related to the campaign that we are encouraging libraries and historical groups to share on their accounts.
