The Library of Michigan is announcing the 2017 Letters about Literature<http://www.read.gov/letters/> program. We are the Michigan host for this national program from the Library of Congress. It is a reading-writing contest that invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to write letters to authors of books that have changed their lives. This program gives students the opportunity to reflect deeply on a book. As readers, they come to understand how literature is more than assignment, but also a life changing experience. Children and teens can participate on their own or as part of a library or class project. The 2017 letters will be due in two waves. Level III entries (grades 9-12) have a deadline of December 2, 2016, and Level I and II entries (grades 4-6 and 7-8) have a deadline of January 9, 2017. The state and national winners will be announced in May 2017. Baker & Taylor price changes

Hi! Been pondering this question and wondered if everyone else has had the same response from Baker & Taylor in response to their price changes between the time of ordering and the time of receiving: For example, often, when ordering something through their TS360 site - they list the price, but when it actually comes - the price is higher. Most times it is not that significant, but it adds up. Today I had two that were actually each $5 higher than their advertised price. When I asked a few months ago, I was told that the prices that I see listed in their online catalog were not set in stone - and that they reserve the right to raise the price. The only way around this is to do this: Each time you want to order books, build your cart, but, instead of ordering right then and there, ask for a quote to be sent to you. This quote is good for 30 days and the prices listed in the quote will be honored. This just seems like a ploy to get you to NOT ask for a quote - because who has time to wait for that? And, in this day and age, don't you think they could get their prices changed on their website quickly. Or, do they wait until an order is placed - then go find the current price? Regardless, I don't think this is a good business practice. I make ordering decisions based on the prices that I see at that time - and it seems like false advertising to change it. Maybe it is in their fine print - but the website doesn't clearly state that the price is subject to change. Has anyone successfully asked for refunds? Thanks! FOIA Requests

Hi, Has anyone gotten what I call a nuisance FOIA request? A local resident sent a letter wanting our statistics for 5 years, including number of people using the library, number of cards issued, computer usage, budget and income/expense statements, and my salary. We put links to the Annual State Aid Reports on our website and I referred her to those, as allowed by FOIA. She now wants everything by the month. I explained I would have to charge her to do the work to compile those monthly numbers, and she said she doesn't care. Based on other things she and her little band who don't think Elk Rapids needs a library are doing I'm sure this is just to make things difficult. Paper Order Lists Now Electronic Collection Development Lists: End Of Old Era, Beginning Of New Epoch at TLN!

All, You may remember last September's "big news" from OCLC, concerning their sunset of printed catalog cards effective October 1, 2015. Today I am pleased to announce a similar and certainly no less significant (to us anyway) end of one era, and the transition into a new epoch, at TLN, that being the cessation of the printing of our paper order lists, or as we have referred to them in TLN/WOLF circles for as long as I've worked here, "the list." TLN has offered its librarian prepared, monthly, electronic collection development lists, including the printed lists, as a menu service to its member libraries (and some SLC libraries, too) for a number of years. The electronic service continues to the present day, and will do so into the future. Going much further back in history, at least to the mid-1960's and perhaps even earlier, TLN and its predecessor organizations Wayne Oakland Library Federation, Wayne County Federated Library System, and Wayne County Library made available printed copies of its order lists (the adult list was produced every three weeks and the juvenile and young adult lists every six weeks in those years) to member libraries, as well as under contract to Suburban Library Cooperative and its predecessor organizations, Library Cooperative of Macomb and Macomb County Library. We pledged to continue the paper order list service alongside the electronic version until all libraries made the decision to switch to the electronic edition. That transition has now taken place, and hence effective October 1, 2016 the printed paper order lists will be no more. Long live the electronic collection development lists! So at TLN (and SLC), effective October 1, 2016, out with the paper order lists and in with the exclusively electronic collection development lists! New Library Job Hunt Website Set Up By Michigan Library Grad

Hi Everyone! I'm an alum of UM's School of Information (class of 2010) who has been trying to break back into the library world after far far too much time in sales. There have been some decent library and information science job aggregators out there, but nothing that has quite had the functionality I've been looking for in my own search. The goal is to be a volunteer-driven database of library job postings. Accurately logs, uploads and/or updates incident reports according to established procedures. * Possesses a complete understanding of security hardware/software and has the ability to capture images in accordance with established policies and procedures. * Compiles, maintains, reviews and/or interprets statistical data; prepares reports as requested by the Director or Department Head. * Facilitates effective building access/key control including annual audit of staff access levels. * Provides an overview of security procedures to newly hired staff and occasional reviews to existing staff. * Ensures final building security after library closing (checks doors, clears the building and sets alarm). * Liaison to evening janitorial service. Performs spot checks of premises to ensure cleanliness and reports/resolves deficiencies with crew leader. Reports unresolved concerns to Department Head. * Maintains an inventory of janitorial supplies within assigned budget. * Stays informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, SharePoint, library newsletter and blog. Contributes content as appropriate. * Accepts special assignments or duties in support of the library's goals and objectives. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Facilitates set-up/take-down of meeting rooms for various in-house and public programs; maintains flexibility in work schedule to accommodate events held outside of normal library hours. * Monitors public restrooms; refills paper products as needed. * Empties trash from exterior of building and picks up trash on the grounds as necessary. * Shovels light snow and spreads salt to eliminate unsafe sidewalk conditions; contacts snow contractor when needed. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS * High School diploma or equivalent. * Working knowledge of the most widely-used features of Microsoft Office applications, the internet and common office equipment. * Ability to perform light building maintenance. * Previous public service experience. * Working knowledge of library operations and services, including an understanding of and adherence to fundamental principles of open access to library materials and the privacy rights of patrons. * Ability to maintain confidentiality of private and/or sensitive information. Uses discretion in handling confidential library matters. * Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to deliver tactful and decisive communications regarding policies, procedures and guidelines to an audience not always receptive to the information being communicated. * Ability to work effectively with a diverse public; including children and teenagers. * Ability to work under stressful conditions, exercise good judgment, and act quickly in emergencies. * Ability to multi-task, establish priorities, and remain organized in a changing environment. * Punctuality and dependability. * Consistent display of public service attitude that reflects the library's values. Position Essential Functions and Responsibilities: • Provides leadership to and supervises Technical services staff. Includes: hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of staff. Schedules regular Technical Services staff meetings to address the needs of TS staff. • Manages Technical Services budget. Includes: making budget recommendations to Administration, invoicing collection purchases, and inventory of TS supplies. • Provides collection management for PWPL including: acquisitions (not ordering), cataloging, organization, mending, donation management, and dissemination of library materials in a timely fashion. • Collaborate with Superiorland Library Cooperative and Upper Peninsula Region of Library Cooperation to endure bibliographic database quality. Collaborate on projects with these groups and other catalogers in Michigan. • Participates in the Michigan Library community via MLA and other relevant organizations. Demonstrated local community participation. • Collaborates with other Library Departments in projects including collection weeding and reorganization; Deletes records and manages database cleanup. • Participates in monthly Department Head meetings and serves as liaison between Library Director and Technical Services Staff. Participates in staff committees as needed. • Serves as building supervisor when on duty. Includes addressing: patron issues, security concerns, and potential problems. Demonstrates the ability to make sound decisions and inform Library Director of issues as they arise. • Keeps accurate and relevant statistics and presents a monthly department report to the Library Board. How high is your confidence level in interpreting research data? As librarians interact with more research through efforts with evidence-based practice and systematic reviews, they have a growing need for understanding statistics. This confidence-building course will help you be more comfortable with statistical concept for reading research findings and interpreting data. Goals and objectives: After participating in this webinar, you will be able to: * Understand basic statistical terms such as standard deviation, t test, p value, and so on * Identify test measures used in published research studies * Interpret the data, formulas, and graphs used in the research findings Agenda: 1. Examine sample research papers and their data analysis findings. Highlight statistical terms that will be discussed. 2. Define the statistical concepts. 3. Use interactive exercises to verify understanding. For example, to examine different research studies and decide which test measure was used. 4. Reexamine the research papers and data to further reinforce the concept. Presenter: Jin Wu is an emerging technologies librarian at the University of Southern California (USC) Norris Medical Library. In this role, she tracks, investigates, and uses data proactively to address emerging trends that improve library services and promote library resources. Wu has extensive experience using various tools to gather and apply user information to make data-driven strategy and planning decisions. She has taught MLA continuing education courses on statistics and data analysis a few times in the past years. The classes were well attended and scored very well on evaluations. Wu is active in professional organizations and has given multiple presentations at national and local conferences. Ideas for an election program

We are thinking about doing something as information only (non-confrontational or political) for our patrons prior to this November's election. Has anyone done something like this?
